Review The Last Film You Saw ~ Thread 3

I've spent the last week watching a bunch of movies during the night (and the day  ) and here's what I've been up to:

What Color is Love?
It was a Lifetime movie. It was entertaining, but not the greatest movie I've ever seen of course.

SAW V
Pure Popcorn flick. I'm surprised this series continues to go on, and they don't run out of stories.

Crash
This movie was one of the best films I've seen. It was engaging, entertaining, well written and well casted. Who knew Ludacris could act?

The Terminal
One of my favorite films, and I haven't seen it in quite a long time, so it was nice to see it. It's not your standard film, and in ways it reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window with how most of it is just set in one place.

Mirrors
As much as I like Kiefer Sutherland as an actor, this film was bad. There was a nice surprising twist at the end though, but the majority of the film was just a bad horror film.

My Bloody Valentine 3D
I actually saw this when it first came out around mid January but I neglected to share my thoughts on it so here I am! :)

I was quite surprised at how good this movie was, especially for a Canadian slasher remake from 1981. Usually those don't go down so well. I'd seen the original so I knew somewhat what to expect but I was quite surprised at how they stuck pretty close to the original plot and other details yet tweaked things to make it more relevant to today.

Here's the basic plot: (From IMDB) Tom (Ackles) returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, however, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame (King) is the only one will believes he's innocent.

Being 3D, I was expecting it to be the only element that might appeal to the audience because let's face it, corny slasher movies are well, just that. Corny. This one had some cheese wiz drizzled on top at some parts but I think of it as a homage to the slasher flicks of yesterday so it didn't bother me too much.

There was a lot of humour, surprisingly during the death scenes which were incredibly gory and held nothing back. Add the 3D element to that and you have pieces of bloody faces, eyes and brain matter flying at you which made the movie all that more fun to watch. I actually found myself covering my eyes at some parts which usually takes a lot for me--I suspect the 3D bit had something to do with that.

In between all the killing, there was a lot of room left over for the actors (Jensen Ackles, Kerr Smith, Jamie King) to add in an emotional and human element to the movie which made them easy to sympathize with throughout the entirety of the film. In particular, Kerr Smith who kept me both suspicious and empathetic with his character Axel.

Totally wasn't expecting the ending and it seems they left it open to a possible sequel. All in all, I was impressed with the movie and give it 4 cows out of 5. Moo. :p

Defiance
Saw this one a couple of days ago out of pure interest because of the actors in the movie. (Daniel Craig, Liev Shreiber)

Some background on the plot: (From IMDB) Four Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants.

A great mixture of action, emotion and some humour, this movie held my interest throughout the 2 and some hours. The most impressive element in this movie was that - unlike Tom Cruise playing a German with an American accent in Valkyrie - the actors (Craig and Shreiber) portrayed their characters with believable Russian accents and actually spoke Russian in a good chunk of the movie. It was easy to get lost in the characters and the era in which the film was set.

Great cinematography, smart dialogue and a wonderfully portrayed relationship between the brothers added a great deal to this movie with many important themes; humanity, anger, injustice, suffering, community and brotherhood--all effectively laid out.

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I certainly enjoyed it.

I give it 5 cows out of 5. :D

Paul Blart: Mall Cop - Worst movie I've ever seen. No joke. It is utterly ridiculous. I've enjoyed my fair share of PG rated movies, but this thing should have been rated D for dumb. I swear. It was horrible. I LOVE Kevin Smith, but this was low even for him.

Never Back Down - I personally, enjoyed the movie. I thought is was very good, interesting and thought provoking. I would recommened it to anyone. A soundtrack for me so important because I love the score of a movie. And this movie has a great soundtrack. Music from The Bravery, 12 Stones, Rise Against, and the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus totally seeled the deal for me.

New In Town - I didn't want to see this but I got out voted. After watching it, I thought it was an okay movie. It was actually pretty funny in some parts which suprised me. It seemed kind of slow a few times though. Anyway, it was much better than I figured it was going to be.

The Bigamist- 1953 movie with Joan Fontain. this guy is lonely, cheats on his wife, and as a baby with the other woman. he gets found out when he and his first wife want to adopt a baby and this man at the adoption agency finds he has a second wife. it was kinda sad b/c the guy was so lonely but he couldn't let either one of his wives go b/c he loved them.

Milk- very good movie. i didn't think i would like it so much but i did. even my brother liked it. the only downside to this movie is that it's long and a bit drawn out.

The Dark Knight
Everyone has been so crazy about it, so I thought I'd watch it. Actually, I expected a lot more. It wasn't a superhero movie. I love superheroes like Iron Man and Spiderman. Joker was great, but most of the scenes had nothing to do with each other, or at least I didn't see any connection between them. You can tell that after Heath's death they cut the whole movie and made Joker the very main character. I don't have a problem with that, but this is why the storyline made no sense to me.

What Happens In Vegas
That's one typical hateyouloveyou romantic story with some really poor jokes. The end was so predictable. I liked it though.

One Missed Call
The first 40 minutes was love. I don't like these newer horror movies, because in the second half they always come up with something stupid that makes the whole story lame. I really liked the way the story was developing, but the whole hospital fire thing made no sense at all.

That's exactly what I thought!!! The film was good up to the part where they came up with the fire...where did that come from? I loved the ring tone though!!! :D And I also agree with what you said about those newer horror movies. There's always some kind of unexpected twist...well that wouldn't be a bad thing if that twist made sense :p

Tonight we watched Mirrors. It was the unrated version. For those who love blood, and gross images, will love it. It's one to add to your video list. Very well done, and Keifer Sutherland rocked it.;)

And if you have a home full of mirrors, don't forget to cover them:lol:

OK, I went to "He's Just Not That Into You" and despite the annoying constant chatter and all the "ohhhh-ing" and "ahhhhh-ing" of the almost entirely female audience, I still managed to enjoy it. I rarely see chick flicks, at least at the theatre, but my roomie really wanted to go so I went. The writing was pretty good, and I found myself laughing most of the time. There was also a lot of cringing, but as a woman, it's always hard to watch another member of your sex make a fool out of herself for a guy!

Good cast, good dialogue and just generally entertaining. I'd recommend it if you like this genre of film.

Taken - Excellent movie with Liam Neeson. Absolutely awesome. I think it was a great story with some real life issues, that we forget to talk about sometimes. I'm not going to lie, but the pormo really turned me off. But after I went and saw it, I realized why everyone was so hyped about it. Liam Neeson kicks tail in this movie and I would definitely see it again.

Push - I was really excited to see this movie because I am a fan of Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans, but this movie was much too complicated, They expect you to know the back story before you even get to the meat of the story. They refer to things that haven't happened yet, which just becomes really confusing. Bottom line, not really enough backstory or history behind it to back it up. Other than that, the concept is pretty interesting. Both DF and CE did good jobs in my opinion. I know others thought differently, but who knows. Djimon Houston was great as the antagonist. I would give it a 7 out of 10.

Totally agree with you. I really liked the movie. That part where he says "there gonna take you" really gets me though and that whole scene was great.

YES! It was so intense! When he's explaining to her what's gonna go down...I got goosebumps! Really good movie!

The Happening - I thought it was alright. Nothing really grand IMO. I think M. Night Shyamalan has lost his touch. Going from the Sixth Sense and The Village to this was a little sad. The concept was alright, and it really made me realize how important nature really is, that is, if it's true. But, it's a movie so take it as a grain of salt, unless you know better. Mark Wahlberg did alright but Zooey Deschanel over acted a tad, and I usually like her, so I was surprised. Also, very macbre. The movie shows many disturbing deaths, so if that doesn't tickle your fancy, then I would see it. 3 out of 5 stars from me.

Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman. this is a very good screw with your mind movie. this couple gets married and moves into the wife's english home where she has not been to in 10 year because her aunt was murdered there. a while after moving in the wife thinks she hears things, sees the gaslights in the house flicker and her husband starts messing around with her head saying she's forgetful and losing things.
turns out the guy was the one who murdered the aunt and wanted to get back into the house to find the jewels he was originally after.

not a very good explaination but the movie was a bit long and complicated. Angel Lansbury is in the movie as well, she was 18 years old!! she did a good job playing a bit of a tart haha.

I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night. It was good but slightly predictable. I like how he had a story that gave a reason for ever answer he got right. It was funny that when they asked the last question I actually said the answer aloud....oops...:p The girl in front turned around and said, "Really? I thought it was C."

I wouldn't say that the movie was fantastic but it was worth the $5 to see it.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD darling Leonardo DiCaprio, and beautiful Kate Winslet:thumbsup: horrible story of this married couple who had gone so far off the track in their marriage, and she thought that moving to Paris would solve all their problems:confused: NOT, she was a frustrated housewife who never quite got used to being in the thros, of the hum-drum life [it took place in the 50's] and the monotony, of just being normal. They screamed and fought constantly, and to the outside world were a contented happy couple. Katy Bates and her insane son added to the mix. Superb acting on both actors, riveting, but shook you to the core. And every couple who thinks they have problems should see this, sad ending:(
