Before The Doors Close
Interrogation
Colton: *sits down*
Stetler: So...What were you doing at the bank?
Colton: Withdrawing funds.
Stetler: How much?
Horatio: Seargent Stetler, he does not have to answer that question as it does not pertain to the case at hand.
Stetler: I don't tell you how to do your job Horatio.
Horatio: Actually you do so I'd advise you to do yours properly.
Stetler: *looks at Colton* What kind of gun do you have?
Colton: Standard police issue 9 millimeter.
Stetler: Standard police issue. Sounds very official doesn't it? I didn't know you were a cop.
Colton: Lieutenant Caine hired me.
Stetler: Was this before or after you were in prison for attempted murder of a police officer?
Colton: After, sir.
Stetler: So you don't like cops.
Colton: That was a long time ago.
Stetler: Morphine poisoning, that's pretty hateful isn't it?
Horatio: Seargent Stetler...
Stetler: Right, right I forgot. It has to pertain to this case.
Colton: I don't see why what happened years ago has anything to do with what happened this morning. I'm not the criminal.
Stetler: How about little Lori. You took her and sent her to be a prostitute in a foreign country.
Colton: This doesn't have anything to do w-
Stetler: It does.
Colton: No it doesn't! A bunch of guys ran into the bank and killed a kid! Why does that make me a criminal!
Stetler: Maybe you planned it with them. I mean, you conveniently happened to be in the ban-
Horatio: Rick, that's enough.
Stetler: Do I have to get Speedle in here and testify to what he did?
Horatio: That was years ago. Speedle doesn't have anything to do with it. This is about the bank robbery so stay on task before I remove you from my lab.
Stetler: Colton, did you get an innocent person killed.
Colton: You might want to phrase that a little better.
Stetler: Did a child get murdered while you were at a standoff with one of the suspects.
Colton: Yes.
Stetler: What did the suspect say to you?
Colton: He told me to pick.
Stetler: And did you?
Colton: I told him to kill me instead.
Stetler: Well obviously he didn't listen.
Colton: No he didn't.
Stetler: And you're sure your bullet didn't hit the kid.
Colton: What?
Stetler: You shot your gun, correct?
Colton: Yeah I did.
Stetler: Where'd the bullet go?
Colton: I wasn't really paying attention to where the bullet was going.
Stetler: So you could have killed the kid.
Colton: He dropped before I shot the gun.
Stetler: Maybe you remember wrong. I mean, you weren't even paying attention to where you were shooting, how can you be expected to know when the kid dropped?
Colton: I saw the robber shoot the kid. He dropped, I shot my gun and the guy fled.
Stetler: So it's one criminal's word against another criminal.
Colton: No, it's the criminal's actions against a cop's word.
Stetler: Unfortunately, you'll be seen as a jail bird yourself so you're out of luck.
Colton: *frowns*
Stetler: I need your badge and your gun.
Bank
Calleigh: *picks up casing* Looks like a .45
Delko: The shooter's gun?
Calleigh: Yeah.
Delko: So this is where the kid dropped.
Calleigh: Alexx said that the kid had two gunshot wounds.
Delko: Two?
Calleigh: Cause of death was the shot to the chest. The other round hit the kid's arm.
Delko: Does Alexx know which bullets did the damage?
Calleigh: One looks like a 9 millimeter.
Delko: ...Colton's gun.
Calleigh: The other shooters might have had 9 mils too.
Delko: I hear IAB's going after him pretty hard.
Calleigh: That's their job.
Delko: Well he's one of us but...He's also a criminal.
Calleigh: I think his intentions are good ones.
Delko: Tell Speedle that. He almost killed him. Took his daughter.
Calleigh: I think our main task is to process the crime scene.
Delko: Alright.
Calleigh: *shines flashlight around* ...Bullet hole in the wall.
Delko: *walks over* 9 mil or .45?
Calleigh: 9 mil.
Delko: *hands laser to Calleigh*
Calleigh: *places laser into hole*
Laser is turned on, the trajectory points to the back of the bank, past the teller's desk
Delko: Do we know where Colton was standing?
Calleigh: Speed's got the security footage now.
AV Lab
Horatio: Okay Speed talk to me.
Speed: *sigh* Well, there's not much I can decypher. Footage got grainy about a minute and a half after the guys entered the bank so we're not going to be able to get exact positions on the shooters.
Horatio: What about the kid. Can you see him in any of it?
Speed: *typing*
Horatio: *squints*
Speed: You see him fall, but it got grainy just before the shot was taken.
Horatio: And there's no audio on the tapes.
Speed: No these are old school recordings. They were still using VHS tapes.
Horatio: *shifts positions*
Speed: And they say it was a high security bank.
Horatio: Wait a second, roll back the film.
Speed: *types*
Horatio: ...
Speed: ...
Horatio: What in the hell is that?
Speed: Looks like a truck pulled up.
Horatio: Can you run plates?
Speed: It's going to be rough with this kind of tape. I could get Tyler in here to work at it.
Horatio: Do that.
Speed: The thing is boss, the guys who entered the bank, they never demanded any money. No one gave them a bag, and they didn't bring one.
Horatio: Okay so the question becomes why rob a bank and forget about the money.
Interview room
Megan: *hands over coffee*
Jess: Thanks.
Megan: *sits down* Alright, so tell me what happened to the best of your knowledge.
Jess: ...We had entered the bank at approximately 9 am. Colton wanted to withdraw some money at the teller because he hates ATM machines.
Megan: So this was right before the bank robbers entered.
Jess: Yeah. They came in with these big guns just shooting the ceiling, and I remember that the two main guys were the only ones who spoke.
Megan: What about Colton, what did he do when the shooting started?
Jess: He identified himself as MDPD, drew his weapon, and didn't fire right away. He wanted to negotiate with the robbers into letting everyone go.
Megan: Why did the bad guy shoot the kid?
Jess: I don't know. He made Colton choose between me and the kid.
Megan: And did he choose?
Jess: Yeah he chose himself. But the guy said time's up, and shot the kid anyway.
Megan: And when did Colton start shooting?
Jess: Right after the guy shot the kid.
Megan: Not during, or before?
Jess: ...
Megan: You're not sure?
Jess: ...I remember hearing three gunshots.
Megan: Three.
Jess: Yes, three.
Megan: You're sure?
Jess: Positive.
Megan: Did you ever draw your weapon?
Jess: No.
Megan: Why not?
Jess: ...My gun...It's...It's not clean. I didn't want to have to use it.
Megan: You didn't clean your service pistol.
Jess: I forgot. I didn't know I was going to need it.
Megan: You know, Jess this does happen often. Officers can sometimes neglect some of their smaller responsibilities. Except it is protocol that all service pistols be cleaned at least once a month. So you haven't cleaned it since then.
Jess: ...Am I in trouble for it?
Megan: You could be fined 500 dollars and have a mark on your record. Your gun would be taken away as well.
Jess: *wide-eyed*
Megan: But since this doesn't pertain to the case, I'm going to let it slide. This once.
Jess: ...*sigh*
Megan: Thanks for your help.
