Re: Speed/Rory #8: 'Who Needs Substance D When We Have Spe
It seems most of us are in agreement with 'Speedism Preservation Society' as the thread title.
We can, of course set up a poll later on just to make sure no one's missing out though.

i always thought it was lame how they killed him off to. i mean its fricken miami, he could have been eaten by a gator and then blown up in a mine in the middle of a swamp or some crap.
Exactly! I would have liked to see something a little more diverse than a shot to the heart. Yeah, okay it's the most simple way to kill someone off and it's not AS messy as say, getting eaten by a croc, but it's been done far too often, as
MacsGirlMel stated.

*nods* at least NY was a little creative with Aiden and firing then the car fire...
Makes me wonder what's wrong in the writing department at CSI:Miami.
Even if they were short on time writing the episode for the season 3 premier, there are much more diverse ways of departing a character. They didn't kill
Megan off when Kim Delaney left the show. They didn't kill Yelina off.
Like
MGM lol: Okay now I'm thinking about the MGM building) said, they could have had Speed too injured to come back to work. Perhaps he could have gotten shot in the chest, but survived. It's much more sugar coated for the audience, and it brings in a possibility of Speed's return.
Writers usually 'kill' off a character so the actor doesn't beg to be let back into the contract. It's more of a legal tactic, not just a way of torturing the audience or punishing the actor for wanting to leave.

i ,liked how they dealt with aidens death too, she actually left still keeping her dignity in tact.
They sort of did the same with Speed. Calleigh lied to Stetler about Speed's gun, and during the locker room scene with Horatio, they both kind of passed off the file as 'Gun malfunction' and nothing else. They're right, it
would be speculation so they have to leave it there (Nice loophole huh?
) BUT the audience in a way knows that it was Speed's fault a second time. - Making it great for continuity.
...Though it still sucks.

How would any of you have written him out if you'd been in charge?
I would have had him die saving little Joey. Instead of having Horatio jump in the water to grab him, they could have tracked down that 'Karate teacher' and when Speed and Horatio pulled up, the guy would have had a gun. Then maybe the kid wasn't in the water, and ran while the killer's attention was diverted. Thus Speed running in front of him, the guy shoots the gun, Speed shoots the gun, Horatio shoots the gun, killer dies, gets eaten by crocs, kid is saved and Speed bites the proverbial dust.
So in the end, Speed would have been seen as the hero, and the viewers wouldn't be left with a bad taste in their mouths. It also brings a lot to the next episodes, where Horatio would have felt guilty for not saving him, and wondering if there was more he could have done (Which will have contrasted Speed's feelings - wishing he could have saved Hollis - in 'Dispo Day')
 It seems I'm different than the rest, I wouldn't have left the possibility of his return...Which is dumb of me, but if that's the way I was going to kill him, that's what I would have done.
If I wanted to leave the door open, I'd go with him getting shot, and not dying, but in the hospital.

i think that whole thing was done to boost ratings, just because they had the opportunity but whatever.
Yeah, and I think that was a terrible thing to do. They
knew they'd get ratings. It was a stepping stone to becoming the 'World's Most Popular Show', IMO. It's too bad character death had a part in that.
