Maila Nurmi, TV's Vampira, Dies at 85
    Jan 15, 8:55 AM (ET)
    By JACOB ADELMAN

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Maila Nurmi, whose "Vampira" TV persona pioneered the spooky-yet-sexy Goth aesthetic, has died, coroner's officials said. She was 85.

Nurmi died Thursday afternoon at her Hollywood home, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said. The cause of death has not been determined, Corral said.

Nurmi created her Vampira character - reminiscent of Charles Addams' spooky New Yorker cartoons - to host horror movie broadcasts on KABC TV in Los Angeles in 1954.

Holy jeebus...that is absolutely crazy! I've always liked him as an actor, thanks for posting this. Still a bit unbelievable.

I just saw that article on People.com, and I am in absolute shock. I wouldn't say I was a big fan of Brad Renfro, but I really admired his acting talent. I've seen his earlier work such as The Client, Sleepers and Apt Pupil, and he did such a fantastic job in those movies, especially since The Client was his very first movie. I was saddened to see him get all messed up with all the drug problems, but some time ago I heard that he'd enrolled in a rehab program and was hoping that he'd be able to get clean.

And then this had to happen. It's still a little unbelieveable, I agree. I had to read the article a couple of times over for it to sink in. Actually, it still hasn't sunk in. :( Out of all the young actors that died way before their prime (such as River Phoenix), Brad Renfro was the only one that I was familiar with. So his death affected me way more than the others.

R.I.P, Brad. Your talent will be sorely missed.

I'm a little mixed on this one, as although he was one of the greatest chess players ever, his legacy will always be marred by his eccentricity, especially his extreme anti-semitism.

Allan Melvin! That's so sad. When I was about five or six years old, and the Brady Bunch was in repeats, I would always watch it with my Mom (along with Days of Our Lives. lol) while eating chips and a sandwich. :p

Sam was a funny character. So sad.

    RIP.
