Irish Singer Tommy Makem Dies at 74

DOVER, N.H. (AP) - Irish singer, songwriter and storyteller Tommy Makem, who teamed with the Clancy Brothers to become stars during the folk music boom, has died of cancer. He was 74.

Makem died Wednesday in Dover, where he lived for many years, his son Conor said Thursday. He had battled lung cancer.

I used to watch his talk show while growing up. He will be missed. R.I.P. Merv.

Wow such sad news about Merv Griffin :( I used to watch his talk show and I enjoyed it. He used to have some good guest on it. We'll miss you Merv.

I just heard :( wow 82.. a long life, he's been around ever since I can remember and was responsible for alot of shows, he was always charming and delightful and smiled alot.. RIP!!

Leona Helmsley, 'queen of mean,' dies at 87

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Leona Helmsley, who ran her empire of luxurious Manhattan hotels with an iron fist and went to prison for tax fraud, has died, her publicist said Monday.

Helmsley, who was reviled as the "queen of mean," was 87.

She and fourth husband Harry Helmsley owned such sumptuous properties as the Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue, a block from Saint Patrick's Cathedral, the Park Lane and the New York Helmsley.

She died Monday of heart failure at her summer house in Greenwich, Connecticut, publicist Howard J. Rubenstein told CNN.

Member of New Bohemians Fatally Shot

DALLAS (AP) - Jeffrey Carter Albrecht, a keyboard player for the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, was shot to death early Monday while trying to kick in the door of his girlfriend's neighbor, police said.

The neighbor believed a burglar was trying to break in and fired a shot through the door around 4 a.m., Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Gil Cerda said.

Albrecht, 34, died at the scene. It was not clear why Albrecht went to the house and the case is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
