I just rewatched the episode, and having seen it, again... Wow. That was a mess. What a royal mess of a script. I was incredibly confused on what case was which, constantly stopping to remind myself and my fiance. The transitions were confusing, going from Sofia looking for identification to Catherine and Keppler looking at crime scene photos. Took me a few moments to understand what was going on half the time.
I always record the eps for my dad, and he... Well.... he hated it. I've never heard him say the things he said about this episode, before. His words were, "Convoluted, confusing." That pretty much sums it up. He couldn't follow it, and I kept trying to explain, and it was just too much.
I think the problem is that the best part of the episode started around 45 minutes in... That's when the mutiny started to brew. All the lead-up took forever, and by the time you got to the mutiny, you were having to pause every ten seconds to try to figure out which case was which. The bike processing was unnecessary. The multiple cases were confusing because they all ran together. It was just hard to follow... I didn't realize it the first time around because I was spoiled... but if I had gone into that episode without any indication of what was about to happen, I would have come out of it totally baffled and confused, like my father.
I think it was an interesting concept. I was so looking forward to it... But it took forever to get to the good part. I still maintain that letting 4 more people in on this little stunt would not have been the end of the world. That's been my argument since the beginning. The secrecy and lying to the team was done to add to the drama. This script is all about creating drama for the sake of drama; shaking up the team because they've gotten too comfortable. It's something we've seen before, and it sorta tears at me. I hate drama for drama's sake. Yes, there will hopefully be some followup with Nick... but this episode... The only reason I want to rewatch it is for the last 15 minutes, and the gift scene. That's about it.
I still maintain that bringing the four of them into the fold would not have killed the case. I would really have loved to see this episode open up with the SECOND FAKED case, and have us figure it out along with the team, if you're going to go the "us against them" route. Otherwise, the whole team should have been able to work together on this.
I wish Catherine had told everyone. I've heard the arguments why not, but I wish she had. I wish she had trusted her team, and I think Nick's words in the break room really summed up his problem with this.. it was a breach of trust. Regardless of it was an means to reach an end, it violated the trust between the members of the team. It made them question and second-guess one another, and that makes things rougher.
Glad to see Sara and Cath are going to talk privately about what all went down. And, also glad to see Nick's not letting it go so quickly. It makes sense for his character, after all he's been through...
Overall, it's just so hard to freakin' follow... and I think the concept was good, it just wasn't put together well. Drama for Drama's sake always pisses me off, though.
