Goodness! A Poofter gangster named Mr. Warren, seeing his mum and what went on while he had the mumps, seeing DCI Hunt is more complex than thought, and WTF? Roger Whitaker! I haven't seen one of his infomercials in YEARS--along with Zamfir the Pan Flutist!!!!

I know Hunt said that, pilgrim. I was just remarking that I haven't seen one of his record commercials in years--I remember them as a kid in the 1970s (I was born in 1968, which means I'm 5 in Tyler's dream!)
 
Hankster, I'm surprised...it took a rewind or two to determine the music that Hunt and his wife liked--it wasn't til the end that it dawned who Whitaker was, though a hilarious flashback. I have to go back and find Zamfir.
 
It is hard to understand sometimes and I come from Manchester! I hate it when there are things that are more cultural. Like when I'm watching American tv there are things that just go right over my head, especially comedy, because I just don't understand it.
 
1881, I didn't realize til last night that it takes place in Manchester - though come to think of it there was some kind of expressway billboard ad in the first show and probably a hundred other allusions to the city. Anyway, in this show it was obvious because it revolved around the rivalry between Manchester United and City.

And I just realized. What if they don't pick it up next year in the US? It's getting rave reviews from Time and other media but that doesn't always mean people will watch. People!@# However, if there are dvd's, all is not lost.

As far as US dialects, our accents can be mind-boggling too - and then computer-speak/trendy jargon. Makes me wonder how much it costs to get hearing impaired subtitles.
 
LOL! Closed captioning is free here in the US. Any TV made after 1994 has it built in--you just have to activate it in your TV's menu.

The ep with United vs. City and Sam Tyler seeing himself as kid walking by was cool and freaky at the same time. I also loved how DCI Hunt had to pretend to be a Red fan in order to go undercover!!!

I will say this: I FINALLY understood the deal about the scarves in Hairy Pothead... ERRR... HARRY POTTER from seeing that episode--Soccer fans in Englad wore those scarves with their favorite team's colors rather than logos and replica jersies like we do with our Sports teams here in North America!

BBC America is a Specialty Cable Channel--ratings don't have to be spectacular to keep a show on. The New Battlestar Galactica has had high marks and rave reviews, and is one of the best rated shows ever on SciFi, but even its highest ratings don't equal a CSI or Grey's Anatomy level. Same thing with Monk and the 4400 on USA network.

I expect Life on Mars to stay on BBC America.

Oh. Hankster, you know the date of the free subtitles inception! Very good and now I have to go find the TV remote. I guess Dish made me totally unaware that I'd ever need that again but it's worth it to see what people are saying - or at least what the translators think they're saying, if it's anything like dvd translators. I have a video recorder with my Dish and I haven't even looked into whether or not they do subtitles.

Speaking of Harry Potter, they had to be very careful of seeing themselves too. I also think Doctor Who was very careful. I have to bow to JK Rowling. She singlehandedly influenced my daughter read entire big books within a weekend.

She got replica jerseys in Germany this summer so the scarves may be a 70's thing (1881? Aiden? any expert witness input? are team scarves still big in colder weather? - have to look on daWacko's FIFA site - definitely not summer World Cup garb anyway) though Harry Potter has an older feel to it.

I think I've stopped making sense even to myself.
 
My wife is Chinese and though she speaks and understands English flulently, she likes having the captions up because some characters on some shows speak too dang fast! Even I feel that way sometimes. It's also easier to watch TV and not have the volume up as much with the captions on--great for when our two small children are sleeping!
 
Hankster, I do that with dvd's when I don't want to wake anyone.

I'm gonna miss this show more than any. [Ducking as CSI kits come flying]. I am so jealous of you folks in BBC land.
 
Is there going to be a second season? I know next Monday is the first season finale. I've enjoyed this show immensely--and I thought it was cool that as Sam is waiting to be shot, he smiles, and apparently at that very moment, he did so in the hospital where he's hooked up. Very cool show indeed!
 
The guy that play Sam Tyler looks a bit like one of the fellows from "The Full Monty"--I know he's not, but there is a resemblance it seems...
 
To get poetic, Hunt could be the guardian angel in this coma - actually, one of the warrior archangels like Michael.

In last night's episode, Hunt initiates the investigation of the cocaine OD and is hanging around all-knowing outside the door when Sam goes in to present the tape to the Chief Superintendent, who destroys it. In an earlier episode Hunt said that Sam didn't have enough fight in him which apparently caused him to fight more for his life too.

My daughter sees an Alice in Wonderland theme - like falling down a rabbit hole - because of that blonde girl on the TV and the black patent leather shoes in the forest. Sam thinks that destroying this world is the only way to return to the future and sweet Annie understands, though it's her world. I'm going to miss this. One more episode this year. :(
