do you prefer greg as a lab technician or a CSI?

I like seeing him get more screen time, and it's true that everyone needs to grow up sometime... but I think I preferred funny, lab tech Greg to in the field Greg.

Either way, I like him, but in the lab is my preference.

We know the old goofy Greg can be very entertaining sometimes but for all those years he’s been trying so hard to prove himself not only to Grissom but the whole crime lab that he can be a capable CSI as well, and we were just like ‘Hey, forget about the efforts, I‘d rather have him back in the lab BECAUSE HE’S FUNNIER THAT WAY’? I dunno, just sounds a little unfair to me.

That's a very good point, Vanilla LOL!!

I liked him better in the lab. He was the best at what he did. They seemed to take Greg's sense of humor away and give it to Hodges.

Tripp3235, I agree 100% with what you wrote. Also, if Greg is just limited to one or two small lab scenes in each show, it's bad news for us Greg fans who want to see him grow. It seems like some would like Greg only to serve as the joker in small scenes because it will take away precious seconds from their own preferred character(s). I'm glad to see that isn't going to be how it is. The writers obviously enjoy having Greg expand his knowledge out in the field, and I'm very glad for their wise decision.

I'm glad Greg is out in the feild now, cause that means more screen time! :) But I wish he'd losen up more, bring back a little more of the lab rat inside of him. But he's still hot weither he's in the lab or not!

I miss Greg as a lab tech. He had such a zany sense of humor, and he brought laughter and fun to the show. now it seems to have toned down a lot, and the whole of s5 just seems...different, to me. I miss the way the show used to be. I hate the GSR moments they put in. I want to see more of Nick working with Grissom, and more Warrick with Sara, or something. Now it's all Nick/Warrick, Cath/Warrick, Sara/Greg, Sara/Grissom (ugh!) or with Sofia. The pairings were less set in previous seasons.

But I digress, since this is about Greg...

I'd rather see him back in the lab, examining the DNA of potential life partners. :D

I prefer lab Greg. Granted, he gets more screentime now, but I don't feel the increased amount of screentime has been put to good use. To me he feels like a blander character now than he was back in the lab. The angsty discontentment in S4 was great to watch, as is the "larval CSI" POV in the first half of S5, but after that, the character development more or less took a downturn. Right now Greg's stuck in this place where he's been through too much to resume his role as comic relief, yet not serious enough that tptb feel ready to give him a proper backstory. I hope tptb decides to take his character a step further next season, have him learn from mistakes, get him emotionally involved, show him clashing with other characters, etc, not just have him recite evidence all episode long. They don't even need to put him in the spotlight, just give him something to work with.

I totally agree with everything you said lemon_grass. I don't think that the increased screentime has been put to good use in the development of Greg's character. As of right now I prefer Greg the lovable lab tech to Greg the boring CSI. And it's not all because he was funnier, it's because he was quirkier, and frankly, had a lot more personality.

Through all five seasons, I’ve seen some real lackluster episodes with spotlights on fairly everyone in the cast. IMHO, none of the main characters, not even Grissom, could TPTB agree that they’ve made the best of his screentime and managed to deliver 100% what the fans/viewers demand on the role in those rather flat storylines. And I just don’t believe in the ‘enlighten me with every single movement of a character’ or ‘More screentime? No way I am not entertained here!’ thing , either.

However bizarre this may sound to some, MABYE there are fans out there who want to know how a relatively innocent and inexperienced young CSI sees things differently from his veteran coworkers, or MAYBE it tells us something about life and its value by showing a too often underestimated ‘whiz kid’ gradually turning into a man and not just a CSI by dealing with difficulties in life. Well, to each his own, but they sound pretty ‘good use’ to me.

Thankyou. Count me in on one of those fans.
I've been watching CSI since the beginning, and although i loved labrat Greg and his antics, to have him staying as a labrat forever, or at least more years, is just unrealistic. The character of Greg is nearly genious-level in intelligience, and in season 4, clearly showed his boredem and unhappiness with being cooped up in a lab all day. Greg's progression to fieldmouse was very realistic, and, apart from giving him much more screetime, it showed many more layers to his character and personalilty, instead of the funny, always goofing around Greg. I try not to let it irritate me when people say they don't like Greg in the field becuase he's changed, and isn't funny anymore. Greg has kept his sense of humour from the lab, as the writers have made a point of showing this in scenes such as the 'exploding toilet', and the pillow scene in 'Committed'.

Of course Greg has changed, and matured slightly, as anyone would when viewing dead bodies day after day, but, rather than completely losing his humour and becoming boring, he has instead shown more sides to himself, which to me, is way more interesting than simply having 1 minute of seeing only the "funny" side of Greg each eppie.

Yes, yes! Word. And Tripp3235, also totally agreeing with you.

I've been watching the show from the beginning also. I loved Labrat Greg, but it was obvious he was going stir-crazy in the lab. I remember a scene where Jaquie Franco had lost a bet to him and had to wear his turban, and she almost begs Grissom to please, sent him out into the field cause he was going stir-crazy.
I think a lot of the crazy stuff came from Greg being bored cause he already had finished his job. I mean, everybody seems to forget Greg's an amazingly smart guy. I love to see his character evolve, and don't find it boring at all.

And he definately hasn't lost his humor. There are little moments where maybe he isn't saying anything, but you can see in his face he wants too. He may seem a bit uncomfortable in the field, but I think it's because he's trying to find his place.
