Head of the Graveyard Shift
Shortly after the storm, Eric stood up with his wife in his arms. He could see she was sleeping with the tears still wet on her lids. Carrying her upstairs, he laid her on the bed.
"Eric"....her voice quivered.
"I'm right here Mac. It's okay."
Sliding in beside her he pulled her into him and wrapped her up tight.
"Mackenzie?"
"Mhmm"..she whispered with tears.
"How could you let me touch you? How were you able to let me love you. Especially on the nights I was rough. Never once did you flinch, or complain. Why?"
"I guess I blocked it out Eric. Like I use to do with Scott. When he would become rough, or would hurt I'd close my eyes and think of something special to help me get through it."
Eric's face was etched in pain. Just how many nights did Mackenzie pretend to like it. How much of her loving him back was real? Questions he knew he needed answered.
"Mackenzie? How many nights did you pretend? How many nights did you tell me you loved the way I loved you? How much of it was lies?"
"Oh Eric...God I'm so sorry. I never meant it in that way. At first yes. I did pretend. But then when I realized how gentle, and loving you were that all went away. Leaving behind nothing but your passion."
"Did I ever hurt you Mackenzie? Did I ever make you feel pain?"
"Only the first couple times Eric. Only when the memories of what happened surfaced. But I can honestly tell you that I've felt nothing but love from you. I'm only sorry I never told you from the begining what I and the girls had been through. That was my only lie Eric. The only thing I ever kept from you."
"I need to see my girls Mackenzie. I can't leave them for the night. I'm sorry. I have to be with them."
Getting up from the bed, Eric changed his clothes, and waited downstairs.
"You almost ready Mackenzie?"
"Yeah...I'm coming Eric."
She couldn't understand. He had done a complete turn. She understood his need to see the girls. But deep down, she realized she may have hurt him with her last confession.
Arriving at their parents home, Eric walked in and headed right upstairs.
"Hi daddy." She cried.
"Oh Mackenzie. What happened?"
"Everything was good daddy. We talked, I told him everything that had happened to us. He threw a chair, screamed a bit, and then he comforted me for almost two hours."
"Then what's the problem love? He looked broke."
"I think I may have hurt him real deep daddy. He asked me how many nights I lied to him about the way he loved me in bed. About how I handled the pain when he loved me.
"What did you say?"
"I told him just a couple times at the begining. I told him I'd close my eyes like I did with Scott and think of something special. But after that I felt nothing but passion from him. He then jumped from the bed, and told me he had to see his girls."
Mac could understand Eric's pain. There was nothing worse then your wife confessing that you hurt her in bed.
"I don't think I can do this again daddy. I think I may have just lost him. I didn't mean to make it sound like that. It's just I was confessing everything, but I never once thoug....."
"Shh...come on love. It's going to be okay. Give him some time with the girls. He'll come around. It's just a shock. You've both been through a hell of alot tonight. Come sit. Let's see what happens when he's done with his girls."
Walking into the den, she sat between her mom and dad, as they sandwich her between them. Holding her, rocking her, loving her.
