Character Development/Screentime Discussion

But you're forgetting, Mascara wasn't actually a CSI episode. They mixed up their programmes and accidentally showed CSI: Langston's Spiritual Hour

But I agree- for most of S9 he was doing Archie's job, which was double disappointing for me. Then S10...well, I must have blinked and missed all his scenes, the first time I actually noticed him was in Panty Sniffer (which character wise was my favourite ep) then Take My Life, Please, and that's about it :scream:

Bwahaha!

I'm pretty sure there were episodes from when he was still in the lab that gave him more screen time than some of those in season 9. Season 10 was a bit better, I thought - 'Internal Combustion' was another one that he was in a fair amount, 'Sin City Blue' and 'Lover's Lanes'. Not to mention 'Appendicitement'! But where are the storylines? Three seasons is a hell of a long time to go without a dedicated one, and our Greggo's long overdue.

Well, I didn't really pay attention to anything before Appendicitement, and SCB and Long Ball were kinda lost on me, but at least someone gave those writers a kick up the a$$ and got Greg some screentime.

But heck, even Henry and Archie got more important roles in Appendicitement and TPS (not that I'm complaining :p) Here's hoping that they get another kick and start giving Greggo something to actually work with

Here's hoping indeed! The poor guy is severely underused. He could have such depth, and yet it's hardly ever explored, you know?

*waves a 'WE WANT MORE GREGGO!' banner 'neath the noses of TPTB!*

*Waves 'We want Szmanda' banner, screams 'Where's our Greggo?' and threatens to do some bad things to the writers if they don't give Greg more screentime*

...Seriously, I think the writers are blind, deaf and dumb (in all senses of the word  ). They don't seem to realise that most people are getting sick of the 'Nick and Ray versus random serial killer' show and want more Greg/Brass/Catherine/other ignored character

I compleatly agree with you about Eric getting too little screentime. It's really frustrating when he just has a scene or two in episode and then disapears.

But if you look from the begining of the show, I think Greg has developed the most. I mean, he started as a DNA tech, but then he became a CSI and is now a level 3, which is a pretty big change. And like Desertwind said, Greg is more serious now. He used to goof around in the lab, but now he's acting (more) professionally. Which is of course expected, it would be pretty disrespectful to start joking in the crime scene when someone's just died.

Professionally, yes, Greg's developed the most. But as to actual character development I'd say Nick has changed more. I mean in Season 1 he was seen as a ladies man, playing games in his offtime and joking around with Warrick. In later seasons he was shown as a lot more emotional, even going so far as to break down in a few stressful situations. Then in Season 10 he seemed a lot more detached, more like a cop than a CSI.

Since Greg nearly disappeared back in Season 9 it's hard to determine if he's developed the most character wise. I mean in Panty Sniffer we got to see him liking that the goofy lab tech again at the rave.

Then there's Cath and Sara, who used to be fiery, independant woman. Now, they're just mellowed out whenever they're on screen at all...

Wow, to me Greg is in these episodes alot like always:confused: I think his screentime is well earned, and he's great in all the episodes. I like him too, but I see him every week in all the episodes. Not like of course "Fannysmackin" but he's in every episode. He's not the star of CSI, their all in it to me equally:bolian:

Personally i think season's 9 and 10 have been the least equal of all the seasons. Since entering the show Ray's has been consistently high (dare i say excessively so) nick's has increased, whilst catherine, greg, and even brass are merely passers by on the majority of episodes. It's a shame that they seem to have sucked most of the humour out of the show as well, especially greg and brass (i miss his one liners). I do like the 'new' sara though, in the earlier seasons she always seemed to have a short fuse in terms of her emotions.

Desertwind- Oh, I couldn't disagree more. As SpasmThatCat has pointed out Greg hasn't had his own storyline in three years, while Ray, the newest member of the team, already has two serial killers and a family arc under his belt.

Also, Greg's been on the show, literally from the very starting episode. Yet recently Hodges, from S3 onward, Wendy, from S6 onward and Ray, from S9 onward, have been getting more screentime than him for the majority of the episodes. And when he is on it's usually just a joke or two and then relaying the evidence. Internal Combustion might have been the only ep where we gleaned a tiny bit of backstory from Greg.

Why should it be that I know more about Ray (his family, his home, his background), the newest CSI, than ten year regular Greggo?

Well DragonFriend I see your point, but LF as Ray replaced Grissom, sorry you don't care for that idea, it's just the way it is. That's why he has been at the front and center, but I see that you want more Greg, NO matter how long he's been on, he is still not the lead of the show. I'm getting my way with Ray. I'm thrilled he's at the top of the show. And in saying that, I can't wait to see Ray's personal life, his wife, like when Grissom was the lead, and we saw his. I also would like to see Greg's pad, but I'd prefer to see Rays. Too each his own and different strokes. Life isn't fair to everyone even on CSI. What one person loves someone else doesn't, what one fans hates the other loves. I really enjoy when they ALL work together:bolian:

If Ray had truly replaced Grissom then wouldn't the show have stayed the same as it did when grissom was around? With Grissom characters recieved equal screentime, worked as a team and each character still managed to have episodes were they were front and center. There have been a lot of instances in the 10th season were some of Ray's lines would of made more sense coming from one of the veteran characters.

I agree with DragonFriend95, even though greg isn't my favourite character i would still like to hear more about his backstory (or indeed anything).

Desertwind- So you're saying that someone who has stuck to the show for ten years, ridden with it through its highs and lows, has remained dedicated even though they could have jumped ship any time things were rotten, should get less than the new guy just because said new guy is the 'new lead'? If that's how things in show biz work then its a mighty screwed up profession.

Also, being the 'new lead' (despite the obvious problem that Ray was brought on as a rookie) means nothing. How much did we know of Grissom? As much as we knew of the rest of the characters. We got tidbits of his personal life that spanned over ten years. Ray on thr other hand, is getting his personal life crammed down our throats. We know more about him in 11/2 seasons than we ever knew of Grissom.

I'm not trying to disrespect your opinion in any way, but I'm simply pointing out that it's quite obvious that the amount of character development is severely unbalanced.

EDIT: Basically what Sinclair said :p

Ok DragonFriend are you saying that Greg should be the lead, cause' he's been on longer? and just Greg focused shows. They've all had their highs and lows pretty much and have been featured when that was the case. To me Greg is in it constantly "Long Ball" where he and Sara were working at the golf course [he was funny] and "Unshockable" with Nick & Cath. when isn't he in it? And so many more. And on LF being the lead, that's not my idea I think TPTB hired him in that capacity not me. He's got major medical expertise and a medical background. Greg doesn't. That's why he was offered this position by Grissom. And Grissom was grumpy and grouchy most of the time [not a put down] just his personailty. He was always mad at one of the team members. Ray is never mad at anybody he works with, he's so compatible, kind, courteous, and gentle. He's also never pushy or bossy with them but always listens to their theories views, and opinions. That's refreshing:bolian: and their all more relaxed and calm with his presence. But he does get angry at the perp. like in "Mascara" & the two finales. The show has gone in a new direction, it's not the same as it once was. and to "quote" Grissom Nothing stays the same. For me as a 10 year fan, I've got no complaints.

Even though Eric is talented enough to be able to hold a leader role I'm only saying that he shouldn't be shoved into the background in favour of brand spanking new characters. It's disrespectful to both the actor and character that such talent is wasted.

There are too many examples to mention of Greg getting the bare minimum when it comes to screen time. Take Grave Shift, I counted and Greg was in it for 2 1/2 minutes. That's less than 5% of the episode. For most of Season 9 all we saw of him was when he was doing Archie's job for a few minutes. Season 10 was better, but it was more often than not that his scenes were blink and you'll miss it.

First of all, why should a medical background having anything to do with crime scene investigating and forensics? Second, Grissom, grouchy most of the time? Gris is socially inept, to the point that he was asked if he was autistic. I can understand why he might come off as 'grouchy' sometimes, but he isn't, take it from someone who knows.
