Exactly. I think he's kind of sensitive at heart--it's probably a rare thing for him to let down his considerable defenses. At that point, he'd probably be pretty honest about his feelings. Stella, on the other hand, plays her cards pretty close to the chest and just generally doesn't seem like the type to get emotional about stuff like that. I could see her at some point totally surprised by how much she cares for him.

And that would really wound him, too. I don't think it would occur to him (at least not at first) that Stella might like him. Initially, he'd probably just feel hurt by her brush off.
