In Step with…
-Cathy Densmore,
With this Academy Awards® and 2005 behind us, a lot of you may be asking what movies will be catching Oscar buzz this year. You can be sure that any movie featuring the talents of actor Adrien Brody, a past winner of the award, always catches the Academy’s attention. Today I met up with him on the set of his film ‘Manolete’ that is being filmed on location in Spain:
Q: What’s it like being referred to as the ‘Brody Factor’ by the movie going public?
Brody: [laughs] I’m cool with it, you know. I appreciate that people want to see my movies and have faith that I’ll try my best to stay out of flops and give them their money’s worth. I still love them all the same as I did when I wasn’t so much in the limelight. I mean, liking fans more because they come to see your movie is wrong for me and shallow.
Q: There’s been a lot of Oscar buzz for your next two movies ‘Hollywoodland’ and ‘Manolete’. Do you believe either of these may give you your second Oscar?
Brody:
Um, it’s hard to say. I’ve had fun and learned a lot filming both. I always give each movie I do all I have so there isn’t one I tried harder at. You see, as an actor I don’t choose roles because ‘Hey, I may get an award for this or a big fat check.’ That’s not me. I choose roles for how they appeal to me as a person. And Half-assing isn’t in my vocabulary [laughs]!
Oh, It was great filming with Ben Affleck and Diane Lane for ‘Hollywoodland’. They’re great people. Ben even let me babysit his and Jen’s kid one time. I swear, I thought I was going to break it. Babies are just so fragile. Geez.
[long pause]
Anyway, both movies are great and unique and I wouldn’t be surprised if either got an award for something.
Q: What can you tell us about the film you are shooting right now, ‘Manolete’?
Brody: It’s a fantastic film. I read the script and just fell in love with it. It’s not a movie just about the greatest bullfighter, who is the character I play, Manolete. It’s a love story. About a man in love with death and a woman in love with life. I’m a real romantic at heart [grins] so that aspect really got me. The strange thing is the real Manolete, Manuel Rodriguez, looks a lot like me. When I was watching the films of him I felt that this was the role I was born to play.
Q: And what can you tell us about your co-star Penelope Cruz who plays your love interest in the film?
Brody: Oh, she’s lovely and very talented. She really is. I think what a lot of people don’t know about her is that sense of humor. As you know the story of ‘Manolete’ is a somber one so usually the mood here is dark. I don’t think we ever talked off camera without her making me laugh.
Q: And how were you received in Spain?
Brody: We actually were received by a big group of people at the airport. People wanted to show me pictures of Rodriguez and tell me their own accounts. Menno Meyjes (the director) wanted to start filming that day but I wanted to talk to them. I just stacked my luggage up and just met with each. What amazed me was that after 60 or so years after his death so many people are still passionate about Manolete. I want to do his memory justice in this film.

Interview with Menno Meyjes
What’s MANOLETE about?
It’s about a man in love with death who meets a woman in love with life. Manolete is a bullfighter and all great bullfighters are, in some way, in love with death. He meets this wonderful woman who tries to seduce him away from his dance with death, a dance that is part of his life, his identity and his glory. And this creates a lot of tension in their relationship.
Then it’s not a movie about bulls …
No, it’s basically a story about love, a love story in which one of the two has a very interesting profession. So when anyone says it’s a film about bullfighting, which they have, I always answer that it isn’t, that it’s a love story between a man, who happens to be a bullfighter, and a woman.
You wrote this script more than ten years ago, has it changed much since then?
It’s true I wrote it a long time ago, and I did it very quickly. I think it only took me four or five days, and it was very tiring to do it so fast. But in all this time nothing much has changed, my essential feelings about the story, about the original idea, are the same. It has always been a love story and it still is a story about a man fascinated by death and a woman fascinated by life. It’s a story of contrasts, of lights and shadows, of life and death, of a man and a woman, of blood and sand…
