I hate the idea of DA instead of DL but I still like her own character.
^This has nothing to do with Angell as a character in her own right and sums up part of the problem with the introduction of poorly written romance into a show. It should not be about DA or DL, it should be about D, A, and if it must be L, all as entities with backgrounds and characterizations that are not inextricably linked to one another. A lack of independence and personality is best left in junior high school and possibly the shipper thread.
I cannot believe after six brief appearances a character, a secondary recurring character at that has been deemed offensive enough to want her removed from the show. I don’t know if that is desperation and fear I smell in the air or some genuine instantaneous dislike, a bit of both perhaps with the larger share belonging to the former.
Angell did not replace Maka. Kelly Hu was long gone from the set of CSI: NY before Angell made her first appearance so that particular argument lacks merit entirely and does not need to be addressed. I would point out that had Zuiker not told the audience in interviews that Lindsay had a dark secret the amount of character development for her, a main character, after 20 episodes was close to what Angell has gotten in six, I imagine that goes back to what the actor can do with the material they are given.
Angell seems intelligent, focused, serious, and determined to do her job. She certainly does not possess Flack’s snark, but she does possess a work ethic that the CSI’s respect and a history with them – something established from her first appearance. Emmanuelle is an excellent actor, she is able to convince viewers that she is what she says she is there is never a sense of being drawn out of the show by a poorly uttered line. There is no moment when the viewer is painfully aware that a script created these words and there is a bland person simply reading them without the benefit of emotion. She is seamless and I appreciate that. I appreciate that here may be a character that does not rely upon the popularity of another character or a deep dark secret to boost her up, here is not a character to act as a proxy for some of the viewers. I think we should applaud the addition of a strong, well-acted female character to the show, we haven’t been fortunate in that respect because only Stella is left standing and the writers seem intent on victimizing her in one way or another.
The idea that Angell is only popular because she represents a possible hitch in the Danny/Lindsay fauxmance is insulting though entirely possible since the nameless girl on the subway was the source of much hatred because she dared tangle with Danny, an apparently taken man to some viewers, so I imagine it is possible, because if such a juvenile display of emotion can exist in one direction then certainly it can exist in the other. I’ll say I haven’t seen much discussion supporting the idea of using Angell to put a stop to the D/L fauxmance most people in the forum that disagree with that pairing and its impact on the show have simply asked the writers to stop it.
I can’t see any change in the amount of screen time Flack has gotten since Angells’ arrival, I don’t feel I see him any more or any less than I did back in season one. Not to mention since you invoked the name of Maka wouldn’t she in theory have done the same to Flack’s screen time.
As far as Hawkes lack of screen time, well his absence could have been avoided had he been the only CSI added to the cast during the second season, an excellent argument for why Lindsay should never have joined the cast.
I can’t help but feel that were Angell a balding portly middle-aged man this thread would not exist or if she were a lesbian this thread would have never started. Here we go again . . .
