The 30 and Over Club

These old recollections are similar to a website called I Remember JFK, a blog that talks about toys (hula hoops, slinkys), TV shows (Winky Dink, Romper Room), cars (hood ornaments, fins), people (Billy Carter, Buddy Holly), places (food delivered on roller skates, funky attractions), and much more.

Don't you just hate it when the possesions you had are now found in "antique" stores? (Edit: Jacqui, you beat me to it while I was typing this.)

I used to work at a book store in a mall about twenty years ago for two years. I never read Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Sweet Valley High, or some of the other series listed here, but I enjoyed my employee discount buying the latest Star Trek books (long time board members probably saw that coming) and some mysteries. Anyone ever read "The Cat Who..." books by Lilian Jackson Braun? How about the Gideon Oliver books by Aaron Elkins? Similar to the Temperance "Bones" Brennan series of books.

First, Pocket Books would release one Star Trek (TOS) book a month. Then, when they started the TNG books, it would alternate with the original. Eventually, there would be DS9 and Voy, later ENT and a couple of original series of books. Every so often, they would have either blueprints, technical manuals, episode guides, star charts, and more.

I never read Judy Blume or those Sweet Valley High books. I think those were for people in the "Over 30 but Under 40 Club".

I haven't seen my stuff in antique stores, but I've seen some on eBay. One board game was up for bid at 99 cents....with $23 for shipping! People are idiots.

BTW, my Hardy Boys DVD came from Netflix today!

:guffaw: I've had the same netflix movies sitting around for too long. I need to get them back, and I think I know what I'm going to rent next!

And I guess that explains the Judy Blume since I am in that (just slightly!:shifty:) over 40 range. :D

What a very cool site.

"Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" and "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret" are a couple classic Judy Blume books. Once I hit my pre-teens though, I was heavy duty into "Sweet Dreams" novels- sort of like Harlequins for young girls. There were two I still remember loving too- "P.S. I Love You" and "The Throughbred". Man, I haven't thought of those in years... :)

Does anyone remember a show that was on briefly called "The Powers of Matthew Star"? Man I had a crush on Peter Barton. I think I saw him years later on a soap opera, but it just wasn't the same. sigh...

Yeah I remember.

Now who here remembers Mork and Mindy?

And you know the first record my parents bought me was. "Saturday Night" by the Baby City Rollers!

I was into the Little House series when I was a kid.

Btw, has anyone ever seen toys from their childhood at "antique" stores? How depressing is that?!?

I have several Strawberry Shortcake dolls - Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin, Lemon Merengue, Orange Blossom . . . and their accompanying pets, like Pupcake and Custard. I even have a Purple Pie Man!! :guffaw:

I haven't been to an antique store but I recently was browsing through ebay and they have available the Fisher Price toys I grew up playing with. There was the apple with a bell inside it, three men in a tub, etc...

As for Strawberry Shortcake dolls, my sister and I had a collection of those. One time while TV surfing, I stopped at the Disney Channel and saw that they've modernized Strawberry Shortcake. Now she's wearing jeans.

Anybody here ever had a Cabbage Patch Kid? :p

:alienblush: had several cabbage patch kids :alienblush:

Oh this thread is cracking me up!!!

yes - I also remember Mork and Mindy. :rommie:

Nanoo Nanoo!

My grandmother made me a cabbage patch kid (along with her other granddaughters) one year, but I was a little too old for it when they came out. I did end up getting one a few years later when I was 20, but it was a special Cardinals's baseball edition Cabbage Patch Kid. I still have it. It's in good condition except for the blue dot (think Phoebe's earth tattoo from Frends) on it's head where my little sister got a marker on it.

I LOVED Mork and Mindy. I wonder if "Mindy" and Mark Harmon are still married?

I never really did the doll thing. After Barbie dolls, I gave them up. I do have a fairly decent collection of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi cards though!

One of the coolest books I ever read as a kid was called "The Phantom Tollbooth". I think that was one of the things that opened my eyes to the world of fantasy/sci-fi. I can't remember the author, but I should try to read that again sometime. I also loved the Oz books. What a great series that was- I couldn't get enough of them. Sort of like a precursor to the Harry Potter phenomenon, I guess.

I was too much of a tom boy to have dolls. I had a ton of Hot Wheels and Match Box cars!

I got a 3 inch thick binder filled with Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi trading cards. :D Add to that quite a few dupes too. Star Wars introduced me to science fiction but I really fell in love with it through Anne McCaffrey's books. I have loved the Dragonriders series from the day I started the first book when I was about in 6th grade.

As far as I know yes they are still married. According to Wikipedia, yes I know don't trust everything you read there :) they have been married since 1987.

I loved Mork and Mindy. Excellent tv show :guffaw:

I never read Judy Blume. I never had a Cabbage Patch doll either. My sister had the Barbie and Ken dolls. I just had a doll :) We did get to play with them though.

I was in college when the Cabbage Patch Kids were hip. Yikes!

So for the older crowd, anybody remember those records on the back of cereal boxes that you could cut out and play on the record player? I remember we got some that were spooky Halloween sounds and I remember definitely getting records of The Archies off the box.

They used to have really great toys in cereal boxes. (Not to forget the great toys in CrackerJack) I never had any of the records on the back of cereal boxes, but that made me remember the Monster Records that they used to sell at Burger Chef. I'd forgotten about those completely, but used to love listening those over and over.

Yes, I had records from cereal boxes and some of those floppy records found in magazines.

The Phantom Tollbooth is by Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer. I read it many years ago. It came out in 1961.

IMDB.com (which is also known to have some errors) confirms that Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber are still married since 1987 and have two children. It would be great to see Pam on NCIS some time.

OK, here's one that will (unfortunately) make us all feel our ages: Ralph Macchio, aka The Karate Kid, turned 47 today! Holy crap! He still doesn't look his age but I mean, jeeze! NOW I feel ancient!

Wow, no doubt. Man, I used to love M.A.S.H. The Hawkeye/Trapper years were my faves. :) I was pretty young back then, so I mostly watched it seriously once it was in reruns, but I remember when the show finally went off the air- it was a big TV moment!
