But if I remember correctly, Catherine enjoyed being swing shift's supervisor and she wasn't very happy with the fact that she had to go back to night shift. She showed that in one of the first episodes of season 6 (can't remember which one), when she talked to Grissom on the phone ("I'm not a pervert", loved that sentence).
So I think, if Catherine didn't change her mind about being supervisor (she could have realized she didn't really enjoy it), she may even like this change. She may not like the circumstances, but she'll like being the boss again. Only now, she'll have Sara (I think) and the new girl. She won't have the boys. And that would make any woman sad. Not being able to have those asses to look at as they leave a room.
Well, Catherine was still a supervisor in seasons 6 and 7.
It was confirmed by David Rambo in his reply to a fan mail and we saw Catherine's nameplate that said she was a supervisor in
Secrets and Flies. As for the "perverse game" line, I've always thought it was some kind of a joke between Catherine and Grissom. She has always been the only one who gets to talk to him in that way. I think Catherine loved/hated being the Swing Shift supervisor in season 5. Loved it because she was finally standing on her own after being Grissom's second in command for years, hated it because the working hours really sucked. She actually complained about Ecklie not giving her Day shift in a joking way in
Who Shot Sherlock. In my opinion, if the team has to be split, then Catherine should take Graveyard and Grissom should take Swing. That way Catherine gets to stay where she was and Grissom pays for the mistake he had made.
Well, if the "perverse game" was a joke, where's the smile? Where's the teasing voice? Grissom joked. Catherine? Not so much. She did not enjoy not being swing shift's supervisor and she showed it. Lets not forget that Catherine looked pretty happy with her new role in season 5 and besides some tiny problems, she was doing a good job. When she told Ecklie he should have given her day shift, it was because that was the shift she applied to and there's no doubt that day shift has better hours.
We don't really know if Catherine really is going back to swing shift, it's just speculation based on spoilers, but if it is true, I don't think Catherine will have a problem for too long. As I said, she may not like the circumstances, but she will like being the boss. I know Catherine is supervisor too, but the truth is that Grissom is still her superior. I mean, he still does her evaluations and whatever decision she wants to make has to go through him. That's why she's co-supervisor.
If she goes to swing shift she can make whatever decision she wants and it just has to go through Ecklie. And this time, if she wants to fire Sara (which I don't think will ever happen) she won't have to wait for Grissom's decision. Sara is now on Catherine's team, not Grissom's. That was the biggest mistake Catherine did in season 5. She expected Grissom to take action about Sara's behavior, when she knew Grissom doesn't like it when people try to tell him how to run his team. And she doesn't like it either.
The truth is, making Catherine swing shift's supervisor, working with an all female team sounds very interesting. I would love to see a little friendly competition between the teams. Things change, people don't stay in the same place forever and at least they'll still be in the same building and their hours are not all that different. In season 5 they still saw each other and they still worked together on some cases.
The only thing that I don't understand is how Catherine will cope with having a team of only two people (three with her). True, in season 5 they were three too, but this time there's a CSI 3 (Sara) and a newbie (Vivian, or Veronica, or whatever). It's gonna be hard, but it's not going to be impossible.
That is, if there really is a shift change. We don't know for sure.
