That was the original plan, but Law of Gravity started shooting on the 8th or 9th and from spoilers at YTDAW, TPTB apparently rewrote the eppisode to include Grissom since Billy's play ended on the 7th. Go figure.
I was actually looking forward to Keppy. Now it feels like he was the red-shirt guy in a classic Star Trek episode

Meet Market" from futon critics- Nick and Keppler's case leads them to uncover a black market for human body parts while the rest of the CSI team investigates the case of a wealthy married woman who was found murdered in her own home, on CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, Thursday, Feb. 1, (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Paris Barclay directed the episode written by Dustin Lee Abraham, one of the series' co-producers.
Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber ("Glengarry Glen Ross," "The Manchurian Candidate," "RKO 281") returns as Michael Keppler, a seasoned CSI who is new to Las Vegas and is assigned to the night shift during Grissom's teaching sabbatical. Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Gordon Clapp ("NYPD Blue," "Glengarry Glen Ross") guest stars as mortician Salvatore Heinz. This episode reunites Schreiber and Clapp who both garnered critical acclaim for their roles in the 2005 Broadway production of "Glengarry Glen Ross." Additionally, John Hensley ("Nip/Tuck") guest stars as Jesse Hottman, a host at a "host club" for women who pay large sums of cash for celibate "relationships" with the club's hot young male hosts.
A case involving a man's torched corpse, whose bones and tissues had been harvested, leads Nick and Keppler into the disturbing world of illegally secured and sold human body parts. Meanwhile, Warrick and Sara learn more than they care for about the workings of a new-concept "host club" for women, after discovering that the reportedly happily married murdered woman had been pursuing a "relationship" with Jesse, one of the establishment's most handsome and popular young hosts.

I hope not, that had me angsting a bit lol. They better have made up. COntinuing angst to a mild degree is okay, driving me nuts week to week is not rofl
Here is a theory, not a true spoiler but a "you can see it coming".
The Eckley character has become a cartoonish, one dimensional play of standard angry arrogant boss. It has been 3 years(?) since he made it to the top of CSI, and while his character played an important role in the sepration then re-unification of "the team", he has since been dropped down to being just a boogie-man that people refer to.
My theory is that while WP wanted to go do theater for a while, I think this is also an indication that a shakeup is afoot. This is a break during a key ratings period, what will be one of the longest sequential run of new shows of the season, and Grissom is off teaching for most of it. Keppler is a trial balloon in my mind, a test to see how people handle a different setup in CSI land.
If this is all that successful, don't be shocked to see Eckley caught with his hand in a cookie jar somewhere, sent to the CSI gallows, and replaced by the new boss, Grissom. It would put him in a place where his appearance levels on the show could be lower, or bunches of his shots for different shows could be filmed ahead, giving him ample chance to go out and enjoy other acting challenges, all while giving the show the continued presence of Grissom.
Providing generally the fans go with it during the ratings sweeps, I think you will see this as possible. A nice little rebirth, it would give the ability to bring in at least one full time character into the mix, and would allow Grissom to send in occassional shock troops from other shifts to mix things up. CSI is looking like a show that will have long, long legs, and a little change every 7 years won't hurt!
