In the writers' defence, it's HARD to write for a lot of characters at the same time, and I think it's understandable that they spent last season basically writing Gil, Warrick, Sara (a little) and Ray and Riley -- getting ready to say goodbye to three and hello to two. But now that Warrick and Gil are GONE, and Riley too (I feel sad for LLS), I think they have more of a chance to write the show the way it used to be. I'm rooting for all of them.
The writers are have tough job to do when it comes to the new character because it's hard to replace an iconic and popular character like Gil Grissom and in a way that's what they tried to do and it's been met with mixed reviews for various reasons. For some there is no replacing Gil Grissom, so they left; for others they didn't like the concept of a man in his late forties as a newbies because we have a fixed view that at 40 you should be a 'leader' well in this world, people in their forties are finding themselves retraining do the economy, or it could be moms who have yet to have a career because of child raising or other family obligations, but it's hard for viewers particularly young people to see someone that age in a junior position.
Then there are those who are upset because they feel the long-time characters are entitled to the chunk of the storylines because they were under Grissom's shadow for so long. The majority of storylines went to Gil Grissom because he was the lead character. So now that he's gone, fans want to see the storylines go to their character.
However, the characters are not lead characters and that option is not available to them because the show is structered as a hierchy and has been so for so long. The argument could be made that Law and Order has rotated characters and still remained successful, but Law and Order has been that way for years and fans of the show are used to it. They didn't develop the strong bonds to the characters.
Whereas, with CSI, we feel very attached to the characters, very bonded to them and it's hard to stay on when they leave. There were a lot of fans of Sara who couldn't watch the show after she left. It was the same with Grissom and Warrick.
But when they did leave, the remaining fans hoped it would mean more screentime for their characters such as Nick fans and Greg fans.
So Ray was like an interloper of sorts, an invader. It's not that we resent the Fish-I love the Fish and I like Ray-maybe I would have liked Ray on a different show.
I say, let's have a 24 hour CSI channel with each character getting their own show. We'll have CSI: Nick Stokes, CSI: Greg Sanders, CSI: Grissom and Sara, CSI: Brass, CSI the Lab Rats and CSI: The Under Sheriff..
Let's do it!!!
