Big Brother got only 7.44 million, which might explain the surge for Grey's A: Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: #3, 4.97 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.7/ 5)

Hey, Adz! Long time, no chat!

For the first half-hour, here are CSI's and GA's results:

(9-9:30)

CBS - 8,657 million viewers, 5.9 / 10 HH, 2.3 / 7 A18-49
ABC - 3,515 million viewers, 2.5 / 4 HH, 1.0 / 3 A18-49

For the second half-hour:

(9:30-10)
'
CBS - 9,962 million viewers, 6.9 / 12 HH, 2.8 / 8 A18-49 (rise of 13.1%)
ABC - 3,753 million viewers, 2.7 / 5 HH, 1.1 / 3 A18-49 (rise of 6.3%)

The rises are likely due to the fact that the Office (NBC - 3,977 million viewers, 2.5 / 4 HH, 1.8 / 6 A18-49) is on from 9-9:30.

So...

1) Happenstance - 13.792 million viewers
2) Living Legend - 12.091 million viewers - 12.3% drop
3) Law of Gravity - 10.038 million viewers - 17% drop

9) Double-Cross - 8.913 million viewers - 5% drop
10) Burn Out - 9.31 million viewers - 4.3% gain

An interesting look back:

A repeat of CBS’ veteran CSI took the 9 p.m. hour in the overnights, with a 6.8/11. Second in viewers to So You Think You Can Dance with 8.99 million viewers and a 2.5/ 8 in the demo.

A repeat of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (Viewers: #4, 3.70 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4)

1) Happenstance - 13.792 million viewers
2) Living Legend - 12.091 million viewers - 12.3% drop

10) Burn Out - 9.338 million viewers - 4.6% gain
11) Toe Tags - 8.99 million viewers - 3.7% drop

And again, last year's comparisons from The Futon Critic:

Snagging the bronze then was ABC (households: 4.5/8, #2; adults 18-49: 2.1, #3) with repeats of "Grey's Anatomy" (households: 4.2/8, #8; adults 18-49: 1.7, #11), another "Grey's Anatomy" (households: 4.3/8, #7; adults 18-49: 2.2, #7)

repeats of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (households: 6.7/12, #2; adults 18-49: 2.8, #3)

thanks for the numbers sarah.

well, it's understandable that their repeats don't get as much attention as CSI. on the other hand, when i was addicted to a soap, (yes i was once but ONLY b/c the lead guy was to die for and i shipped him with the girl he ended up with in the end) i watched all the repeats. i mean, the whole thing had 187 20-minute episodes and i've seen every single one of them like 5 times, lol.

so if you love a show a lot, you're gonna watch it no matter if it's a soap with a continuing storyline or not. gotta remember though, that most of the people just don't get SO addicted to a show.

another thing is that CSI had a drop in ratings this season, due to the competition with Grey's. many people just didn't see those eps at all, so they are catching up with the repeats over the summer.

Which is a reasonable theory, except that their ratings are pretty much identical to what they were last season. I think that there's just a core group of 10 million people who watch CSI rain or shine, and it's the 10 or 20 or so extras who have tuned it at some point who decide whether they'll watch in September or not.

With Grey's Anatomy, their repeat numbers have been cut almost exactly in half. Last season they got about 7-8 million over the summer. Now they're getting about 3-4.

From what I've heard from die-hard GA fans, even they aren't sure they'll be watching the new season. I think GA is just finding itself on the same path as Desperate Housewives and Lost - if their storylines don't get better, their ratings are going to fall hard this season. Lost used to get about 20 million viewers. Not it gets about 11. Desperate Housewives used to get, like, 22 - now it's lucky if it gets 16 or 17.

Maybe it is just TiVo, because all three CSIs have fallen in the ratings as well. *shrug*

But I do think that repeat numbers say something about viewer loyalty - CSI and GA get roughly the same number of viewers when their shows are new. Yet almost three times as many people actually want to go back and re-watch an episode of CSI than an episode of GA.
