CSI remains the #1 show on TV for another week, by a margin of around 2.5 million viewers and 0.6 household ratings points compared to Dancing With the Stars. Considering how fall Dancing has fallen this week, my guess is that they will retain it for a third week in a row, no matter how well or badly it does on Thursday night. Grey's is currently the #3 show, trailing CSI by an entire ratings point in households and roughly 3.4 million viewers. With CSI currently at 23,095,000 viewers overall, it will take quite a while for them to be dethroned, even if their ratings continue to slide. My guess is that unless Dancing has a huge finale or suddenly starts seeing a surge, only American Idol will knock CSI off if it continues at around 21 million viewers per episode and Grey's continues at its current numbers.

You know what I was thinking tonight while watching the last 30 minutes of CSI at work?

I'm sure a lot of you have thought about this before as well.

Is that, a lot of viewers of CSI are around what.. 18 - 21, maybe I'm wrong, I don't know statistics all that much :p

But, anyway, when the ratings were 25 + viewers, a lot of the viewers were around, lets say 15/16. Well, I'm 17, and I work. Meaning, I can not watch CSI every thursday, and therefore I do have to tape it. How many other millions are just like me that work, and unfortunately can not watch the show "live"? We all know that the ratings drop is becasue of DVRs, tapings, so on and so forth. But since the viewers are getting older, getting lives, they are not able to watch it like they used too. Doesn't mean the show in general is losing ratings, but just not getting them in that specific hour. I mean, there are over 50 employees at my work, and I know of at least 30 that watch CSI religiously. And while I was watching CSI tonight, I went out to about 6 of them and said, "Hey, I just caught the end of CSI, want to know next weeks promo?" Of course I was JUMPING AND HYPER because of the promo I saw on CTV, but everyone was saying, "YEAH! I love that show, I wish I could've watched it tonight."

It actually kind of amazed me that you really just don't know who watches CSI until you ask.

I guess there wasn't much of a point to this post, but I just think that most of the viewers are in college, working, and they aren't contributing to the ratings during that particular hour it's on :)

I think the majority of CSI watchers are women older then 21, I'd say probably 30 and older. Ya 18-21 category is big, but I really believe the biggest fan base is older than that.

i'm not so sure the fan base is mostly in one area. i think they have people of all ages and men also. I know a lot of people who watch and their age is all over the map

I agree. I think that CSI skews older than it used to because people have grown up with it. It's been on the air 8 freakin' years. lol. People who were 22 when they first started watching are now 30.

But overall I'd say the viewership is all over the board. Old people, young people, college students, professionals, etc.

A show like Grey's is going to appeal mostly to women and younger viewers (who haven't already seen most of those plotlines 20 times on other soapy shows. lol.)

But I get what you're saying about work getting in the way. If you were 12 when you started watching CSI, you're 20 now and probably at university or in a job. Ultimately, though, viewing is just down for every single show. Marc Berman said that TiVo'ing made up 3% of Nielsen viewing last year, and it makes up around 20% this year. The numbers falling from last year (for most shows) around 17-20% isn't a fluke. It's pretty cause-and-effect.

I apologize for double-posting but I figured people would want to be alerted when the ratings were up:

CSI wins for the third week in a row!

    "CSI" (12.3/19)
    "Grey's Anatomy," 12.1/18

I'll ETA when I have the audience numbers.

    ETA

    Thursday 9 p.m.
    CSI (CBS)
    Viewers: 19.63 million (#1), A18-49: 6.0/14 (#2)

    Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
    Viewers: 18.65 million (#2), A18-49: 7.7/18 (#1)

CSI is the most-watched and highest-rated show of the week so far.

its good that CSI is still number one, but a 22% drop after 2 episodes after the premiere is really bad.

For anyone wondering why GA's numbers are going up more than CSI's: Grey's has been running 3 minutes over into its 10pm slot, which means that the numbers it gets after 10 go to the next show, so when final ratings are adjusted and that problem is fixed, GA gets its correct number of viewers back. It's just for fast nationals that they ship out the exact 10pm cutoff numbers.

i wonder why the numbers for both shows are falling so fast. i dont know about greys, but aside from the premiere the episodes of csi so far this year have been great. maybe people are getting bored? ah well, their loss.

hey sarahvma, when you post the numbers for season 8 by itself youve been calling it season 7 :p kind of confused me til i realized what you meant

    Oops! Thanks for the correction.

As for the numbers falling, as I've posted before, according to Marc Berman, 3% of Nielsen households had TiVos last year. This year they have 20%. I think that if other shows were overtaking CSI or GA, we could potentially point to quality but the whole method of ratings gatherine right now just seems way too skewed.

I found something a tad bit interesting. While I was on Facebook today, I was looking at stats in two different cities. San Francisco, CA and Vancouver, BC. The top 10 TV shows (based on stats, being what users have written themselves as their favourite TV shows in their profile) CSI was number 10 in SF, CA and number 2 in Vancouver! (Of course there are also 499,000 something users in Vancouver, which overpopulates SF by about 200, 000 or so users on facebook. :p)
