* Mac is a perfect example of that--they brought Lindsay in, and there were a few times in season 2 when I thought that she and Mac might have some good romantic chemistry. Sure, people would have whined about it being a copy-cat of Grissom/Sara (which it wouldn't have been, but it's a moot point), but it definitely seemed like something that could happen and was based on the way that the characters interacted on screen rather than being entirely scripted. But by rushing with the D/L thing, they basically tossed aside any chance of exploring what-might-have-been...
This is why I personally don't want to see these on-screen romances between main characters. I really don't like D/L but I would have hated Mac/Lindsay even more. I saw absolutely no chemistry between Mac and Lindsay, but I know others did. I do, however, see a lot of chemistry between Mac and Stella. And I am sure many people don't want to see them romantically paired. That is the danger of putting main characters together into canon relationships == there are going to be a lot of reactions to it that run the gamut from absolutely squeeing with delight to absolutely gagging when the couple comes on screen. Whereas if they put no one together, people can see what they see and what they want to see without causing others to want to gag.
Although I must say, as much as I didn't want to see Sara and Grissom together on regular CSI, I have not minded it the way it has been done.
