How Is Lindsay Adjusting to NY?

Lindsay has been in eleven episodes now and she seems to be totally integrated into the team. I have to admit, I was hoping to see a little bit more contrast between her and the other CSIs in the early episodes, to see her reacting as someone from a different geographical area would to NY, and someone from a much smaller city.

Do you think Lindsay blended in with the other New Yorkers too easily? Would you have liked to see more contrast between her and the New York CSIs? Or are you happy to see her fitting in so well?

Having moved from a plains state (one of the ones in the middle of the country) to the East, I have a bit of experience. It did take me a bit to fit in, but it wasn't all that long before I felt mostly comfortable. Yes, some things are still different years later, but those around me aren't constantly reminded that I'm from somewhere else.

Given my experience, I don't think that it happened too fast for Lindsay. There are still differences and little ways that she shows that she's not a native New Yorker. It has been several months now, so she should be fitting in with the team and adjusting to life in New York.

There are a lot of major differences in the worldviews of people from the East Coast and people from....well, everywhere else, but that won't necessarily make someone stick out all the time. A lot of it will show in the little things, not the big things.

It would be interesting if they had a case or a situation that highlighted the differences between growing up in Montana and growing up in NYC, but I think overall it's better that she is portrayed as fitting in.

What things have you noticed? Other than people pointing out that Lindsay isn't from NY, I haven't noticed her acting that differently from the other characters. I'd be interested in your observations since you went through the same thing.

I'd love to see a case like that. It doesn't have to be a big thing, but it would be interested to see that she sticks out a little bit, rather than to be "told" by other characters who can somehow spot her and know she's not from NY.

Oh, you're going to make me think now aren't you? :p

I do have a couple of examples in mind, but I don't have time to write all that much right now.

I'll come back, I promise.

I'm evil, I know! :D  Okay, cool. I just haven't noticed any, and it's bugged me. I feel like they're missing a great opportunity to use Lindsay to illustrate how it might be hard for someone to come to the NY CSI department from a smaller department.

OK, work is stressing me out, so I'm back here...what is it about analyzing trivial things from a TV show that makes my world seem less stressful and complicated? Maybe it's just getting to forget about my life and focus on something else...anyway...

It's actually not things in the lab or having to do with work that strike me. That would be the first place she would get comfortable. When she first moved there, work would have been her whole focus. That's why she moved there and she would have really felt the need to prove herself. Even if something does strike her as different or whatever in the lab, she's going to be reticent to mention it as much because she doesn't want to be the outsider. It would have been nice if we had something after the first episode with her, but by this point, she should have adjusted.

The things I've noticed more are her not knowing the slang, being a bit surprised at the subway surfing, having a "Hollywood" view of music producers. Her work is an integral part of her life, so I don't expect a lot there. The little social things that you know just because you always knew are the things she wouldn't always know.

I also think that the writers haven't really explored this as much because they want viewer to see her as part of the team rather than an outsider. It did take a number of episodes for that to happen; it's only really in the last couple that she seems to be integrated.

ETA: I know this isn't very erudite, but I'm kind of just giving a stream-of-consciousness analysis right now...sorry if it isn't very clear.

I agree. Have her pronounce Houston St. "HEW-ston" or something like that. It's small but would show she's not from around there. I'm not from NYC and I know what doot-da-doot is. Generally it's locational stuff that really gives a charcter away. Whenever I move someplace new I can never get the names straight...I've been to Northern BC where half the names are Tsimishian (Tim-shan) First Nation, and when I was in Sask everything was pronounced differently too...

I agree that the writers could have definitely used her a bit more to showcase the difficulties of moving from a small city to a big one, however, that would not have felt natural to me. I think it would have gotten tedious to have her play the "country bumpkin" too much because honestly, I don't think it's believable. She may be from a small town or the country, but she's still an educated woman and with education comes, if not the experience of the world at large, then at least the knowledge that the world is a bigger place than what you've grown up in. And with such knowledge I think comes the open mindedness to be adaptable.

Agreed. I would be really annoyed, and probably more than a little offended, if they portrayed her as a hayseed or whatever.

I think she's adjusting to NY as best as she can. I agree that they could show that she has been raised in a small town all her life a little more, but it would get a little boring after a while, because, living in NY for such a long time, she's going to start acting differently.

I think they've had a few refrences that she isn't from NY. Like the conductor in Risk thinking she was from Jersey, pronouncing words wrong, a man hasaling her, calling her Dorthoy.

The writers could have added a small talk with her and Stella for example, Stella asking her how she's fitting in and she could respond that she got lost a few times in the city, but she's starting to find her way now. Then she could ask Stella not to tell that to anyone and I could just imagine Stella zipping the imaginary zip on her mouth, telling her she won't say a word. That would be nice. I don't think she'd ever admit something like this to any of the other characters, especially Danny. The both of them seem to compete with eachother, but it's always started by Lindsay. She's always trying to show how good she is. I mean it's ok, that she's good at what she does, but she shouldn't knock anyone else out of the way. She kind of reminds me of Ryan from CSI:Miami. Too enthusiastic.

I would agree with this. NY is used to doing things large scale. You'd have more cases, more bodies, more evidence, completely different ways of gathering it, than any place in Montana and it would have been nice and probably make her seem less annoying, imho, if she'd had trouble adjusting and problems being overwhelmed. Also, the crimes themselves would be of a different quality than a smaller town. Murder is still murder, but motives, methods and cover up would differ. Smaller towns, where everybody knows everybody and their business have a different dynamic and speed.

i keep thinking about her adjusting in the lab. i'm sure that there are people there that don't like her, or that feel like she replaced Aiden. I could see someone telling her off, and her just taking it and not saying anything.

I moved to toronto from BC. totally diff. I notice out here that people speak their minds whenever they want. i sometimes just keep quiet and let it pass. My cousin even asked me why i say "I'm sorry" all the time. It's just natural. something polite i just say whith out even thinking. Even if it's not my fault i still do it. I just grew up not letting things get to me and not confrunting people about things. now that I live here I find myself quieter and let people walk over me. I'm working on it and getting better, but I don't want to turn into a rude cow, that cusses people out for no reason.

I kinda want to see how she would deal with that.

I think the writers have Lindsay confused with someone else. Lindsay now is way out of character from what she was in the beginning and it's so damaging to fanfiction because people see her in two different lights.

She should stay the way she was. Lindsay versus Crime Lab because it was better that way. I wanted to see a couple more episodes before she caved but two episodes later and Lindsay a whole new person!

Meep! What have they done?

Yeah no person is that well adjusted. Hell I thought I was a well Adjusted person. lol I hope they start to show us her cracks. I bet she misses home and hates little things about NY. I always find my self complaining about stupid things about Toronto. Things that totally don't matter, like how they don't close school if there's snow. Stupid things that don't matter. I want to see her home sick.
