Horatio didn't want to cause Yelina anymore pain. He thought she only deserved the best, but he couldn't go back on what he had now... with someone else. He looked at her apologetically. He knew she deserved an explaination

Horatio: When you left for Brazil... some part of me died. I didn't think you'd ever come back, and you told me you were happy with Ray. I told myself that you were happy and I should move on.

He sighed. This was all bad timing again.

Horatio: I ran into an old friend from college. We used to date back then, a couple of drinks turned into dates... I've been seeing her for a months now. We got engaged to be married a couple of weeks ago.

Horatio could tell she was devastated, but Yelina always kept a strong front. Her hand slipped from his. If he was honest, he knew he still had feelings for Yelina, they were impossible to deny, but he had obligations now.

Horatio: Now you understand, you understand why, there can't be an 'us'. I'm sorry.

Yelina could no longer look at Horatio. Her heart hurt far too much to look into those eyes she had grown to love so much. Although she wanted to drop to her knees and let years of frustration spill out, she knew better than to lose it in front of someone who knew her better than that.

Yelina: I...I don't know what to say.
Horatio: I know you're upset. You don't have to say anything if you don't want to.
Yelina: I...want to say something...but...I...

Yelina sat softly on the couch and clamped her hands together. She could still feel the warmth of Horatio's hand, and it felt so good that it hurt even more.

Yelina: What's her name?
Horatio: Janice...Janice Valencia. Yelina, I'm so sorry. If I would have known about Ray, I would have been there for you in an instant. You know that.

Yelina continued to look down, afraid of what she might do if she were to look at him.

Yelina: I want to offer my congratulations, I really would...but...after all that we've been through together, after all the late night tears...and for what?

She couldn't look him in the eyes. He knew she was always putting up a brave front. Horatio wished there was a way he knew how to fix this, he always could, fix things... but he wasn't sure about this.

Horatio: I umm... I don't know what to say. All those times we had together, it meant something. But I'm engaged to Janice now. He was a turmoil of feelings, he loved Janice, or so he thought, but here was the woman he had always loved with his whole heart. Just seeing her made all those feelings re-appear. And she was hurting, and he was partly to blame.

If there was something he could do to undo all this he would. Ray had cheated on Yelina again, and he should have been there for her. He wanted to be there for her now, but he had obligations.

Horatio: No matter what I'm always still here for you.

Yelina: But it won't be the same as usual.

Yelina finally looked up at Horatio and saw a man who looked genuinely sorry...it was as if he felt he had messed up.

Horatio: Are you going to be okay?
Yelina: I'm fine. You should be going back...to Janice.

Horatio felt as if he had perhaps offended her and she wanted him to leave. He stood up.

Horatio: I'll drop by again... you know to see Ray Jr. If you still want me to talk to Raymond -
Yelina: No. I don't think there's anything more I want to do with him.

She was angry and hurting, and Horatio wanted to pull her into his arms for a hug. But he stopped himself. It would stir up more feelings he had tried to bury.

Horatio: I'll go now. You sure you're going to be ok here by yourself?

Yelina: I'll be fine, Horatio. I just want to be alone right now.

Horatio nodded in defeat and walked out the door. Once she was sure the door was closed, she softly whimpered so that no one but herself could hear. No tears were shed then, for she knew it was an undue stress on her already pained heart.

Yelina: Someday, Horatio, we'll be together. I can feel it.

Janice Valencia was excited, for it had been a whole day since she had seen Horatio, and she was eager to see him again. When she heard him walk through the door, she ran over and right into his arms.

Janice: Hey.
Horatio: Hey.

Janice could sense that something was bugging Horatio.

Janice: Honey, is something wrong?

Horatio held her in his arms but some part of him wished he was still with Yelina. He had made up his mind some time ago to start life anew with Janice, nothing prepared him for this.

Horatio: I ummm, my brother's family flew in from Brazil. I was er, I was with my sister-in-law. I wasn't expecting them back here.

Janice remembered Horatio's younger brother. They had met a couple of times before while she was dating Horatio in college.

Janice: Well, maybe you should invite them over. It's perfect timing, for the wedding.

Horatio (smiles obligingly): Well, we haven't set a date yet, and er... they're having some problems right now. I er, I'm trying to help them out.
Janice (still in Horatio's arms) : Always the great big brother I remember you to be.
Horatio (bows head) : It's been a long day. I'm tired.
Janice: I know just the thing to help you unwind.

She started to undo the buttons of Horatio's shirt. He obliged and kisses her. He led her to the bedroom. An image of Yelina's sad face flashed across his mind. He forced it out of his head, but deep down inside he wished the woman in his bed was Yelina. Ignoring the nagging feeling of guilt in his mind, he made love to his fiancee.

Horatio woke in the middle of the night, troubled by dreams of times he spent with Yelina while Raymond was away. Carefully he peeled off the covers. Janice was still asleep besdie him. He headed to the bathroom to splash some wather on his face, trying to wash away the feeling of unease. His mind wandered to Yelina. How was she doing? He shouldn't have left her all alone like that.

Janice: Horatio? What are you doing up?
Horatio: I'm sorry, did I wake you?

Janice: Well, I heard the water running in the bathroom, so technically...no.

Horatio smiled a faint smile and turned toward his fiancee. Even in the middle of the night she was beautiful with her long black curly hair cascading down her back and in front of her shoulders. She moved closer to Horatio and rubbed his bare chest with her hands, looking up at him with the same smile Yelina would give at times.

Horatio: I, uh...I have to go.
Janice: What? Where are you going this late at night?

Horatio had already slipped on some jeans and a t-shirt before he acknowledged her again.

Horatio: I, uh, need to take a drive...get something off my mind.
Janice: Okay, sweetie. Be careful.

Horatio made his exit from his apartment which he now shared with Janice. Guilt was an awful thing to bear. Guilt for keeping Janice in the dark, she trusted him impiclitly. Then there was the guilt for Yelina, for his brother's infidelity again, for thinking that Yelina and himself were a closed chapter and moving on. Guilt for leaving Yelina alone that night. Guilt weighed heavily on his shoulders like a thick cloak he couldn't shake off. Someone would get hurt in the midst of all this and he didn't want it to be either woman.

Driving rather aimlessly he found himself once again at Yelina's house. The clock in his car told him it was too late, or rather too early to be there. It was two in the morning. Still he had the urge to check on her. He sat in his car trying to come up with a reason why he was there, and for disturbing her sleep and couldn't. He worked up the courage to make his way to her front door. Instead of ringing the doorbell he opened his cellphone and dialled her number. She picked up after a long while.

Yelina (sleepily): Hello?
Horatio: It's Horatio. I umm, I'm sorry to wake you at such an hour.
Yelina (sighing): It's ok, I wasn't sleeping very well anyway.
Horatio: I umm, I wanted to, I wanted to see how you were doing.

There was silence over the line. Horatio knew she had every right to be angry. Afterall she had all but confessed her feelings for him and he had revealed he had a fiancee.

Horatio: If it's ok with you, I'd like to see you.
Yelina: Now?
Horatio: I er, I'm outside your door.

The line went dead and Horatio wondered if she got mad and hung up on him. After some moments of debating whether or not he should go, he heard the lock turn. Yelina stared back at him, her brown eyes sad but beautiful as always. She looked breath-taking in her night gown that left very little to imagination. Horatio lowered his eyes and shifted his weight nervously.

Horatio: Can I come in?

Yelina looked at him for a long moment then, by opening the door a little more, motioned for him to come inside. She walked over to the couch and sat down, making Horatio shut the door behind him.

Yelina: Why are you out this late, Horatio?
Horatio: I, uh...I needed some time to myself, needed to take a drive.
Yelina: And you...wound up here?
Horatio: Yeah. I, uh...wanted to see...how you were doing?
Yelina: If I weren't doing fine, I would have called you.

Horatio was shocked and quite hurt by what she said.

Horatio: Are you...mad at me?
Yelina: Not at you. I'm mad because I came home too late.

Horatio wanted to die at that moment, for Yelina was in pain and it was all his fault. He ducked his head in shame in a painful attempt to hold back tears.

Horatio: Yelina...I...I'm so sorry. If only I had known...

Yelina felt bad as well. I've only seen Horatio cry a few times, and only when he was really hurt, Yelina said to herself. I hope I didn't hurt him that bad.

Yelina: Horatio, please...don't blame yourself.

I’m gone for a couple of days and all this happens???

This is great!!! :D
But Janice has to disappear soon!

Horatio kept his head bowed and blinked. It seemed like much of everything that went wrong with the people he loved was his fault. He was the one causing her pain and yet she still showed so much concern for him. How could he not blame himself?

Horatio: If only I knew...
Yelina: Don't start, I didn't want you to know what was really going on in Brazil, there was no way you could have known.
Horatio (bitter smile): Our timing's always wrong... It's... complicated.

Yelina nodded. The last time she had said that to him the situation was reversed. She was with Stetler.

Horatio: I'm sorry for coming here at this hour. I just... just wanted to see you, make sure you were ok. You sure you ok?
