Yelina: It's going to take some time, but I'll be okay.
Horatio: Now you and I both know...that's not true, is it?
Yelina: But that's what you want to hear and that's what I want to say.

Yelina could sense that Horatio was attempting to have another one of his famous everything-is-complicated-and-such talks, but as always she knew he would fail at getting his point across.

Horatio: Yelina, if there was any way I could fix my mistakes, I...
Yelina: Horatio, you didn't know.
Horatio: But if I did, trust me, I would have done everything in my power to make it work.

Yelina could no longer hold it in. She reached over and wrapped her arms around him. He closed his eyes and did the same.

Yelina: I just wish we would get a chance every now and then, you know?

He inhaled her scent. It was something he had missed and it brought him the conflicting sense of warmth and excitement as always.

Horatio (softly): Me too.

They looked at each other, and time seemed to stand still. Still in each other's arms, any slight movement forward and their lips would meet, and change things in a new and exciting way. Horatio fought the urge to just close the inches between them. His mind screamed that it was all wrong, but at the same time right. He leaned forward, following his instincts, but his cellphone rang just as their lips were about to touch.

They sprung apart, Horatio's cheeks turning red. Yelina lowered her gaze to the floor. An awkward tension filled the air. The cellphone continued to ring and Horatio picked up.

Horatio: Jan?

Janice: Hey honey. Just wondering if you're alright.

Horatio took a deep breath and exhaled loudly. He was apparently caught off guard by the sudden interruption and was still struggling to regain composure.

Horatio: I, uh...I'm fine, dear.
Janice: Where are you at?
Horatio: Just, uh, driving around.
Janice: Oh, okay. Be careful, okay?
Horatio: Alright, I will.
Janice: Love you.

Horatio's heart started to beat faster after Janice said that. He knew he was going to have to reply, but he wanted more than anything to let Yelina not hear.

Horatio: Love you...too...bye.

When he hung up, he looked over and saw that Yelina was looking elsewhere.

Horatio: That was, uh, Janice. Just checking up on me.
Yelina: I could tell.
Horatio: Well, uh, it's getting late. How about we catch up tomorrow at lunch?

Yelina finally looked back at Horatio.

Yelina: That sounds nice.

Yelina was blinking back tears. Horatio's heart broke. He hadn't told Janice about Yelina, there was nothing to tell. Afterall they didn't do anything. But he hated keeping things from Janice. He knew having Yelina hear the conversation with Janice probably reminded her of what she didn't have with him. It was a no win situation, but he was determined to work things out.

Horatio: Good. I'm hoping to see Ray Jr.
Yelina: Yeah that can be arranged. I'll see if he wants to join us.

She didn't want Ray around, there were things she had to work out with his uncle, things he'd better not know about... yet. But she understood Horatio had always been and was still fond of Ray Jr.

Horatio was relieved. Having Ray Jr was neutral ground. And it gave them something to talk about without having to address their current situation. They had almost kissed, feelings between each other were very evident. An awkward air still hung between them.

Horatio: So I'll see you tomorrow.
Yelina: Yeah.

Horatio left Yelina's residence. He still had time to head home for a shower, then get ready for work. When he got home, Janice was asleep. He got in the shower. As he exited the bathroom he could smell Janice getting breakfast ready. Guilt hit him again. He dressed for work and joined her for breakfast.

Horatio (sitting down beside Janice): Thanks for all this.

Just what I needed this very first day of school. I just discovered that I'll still have workexperience which I totally hate, I thought standing in the schoolshop every x saturday would be enough but no!! Anyway wednesday till friday I'll be away, since we go to the sea with our class. God I'll miss u lot and I'll miss this thread. Sorry for being offtopic by the way :p

Great story, mm they should've kissed. But they will soon right?!

Mmm, I don't think I can :(
I already took 5 days off and went to the hots prings :D (I think that's the right translation)
Anyone know how to creat a double so I can go?

Hrockz, EyeHeartH, this is great!!
I still think we should get rid of Janice, tho!

And I'm with Kit, they should've kissed!

Janice walked over and kissed him on the cheek.

Janice: Anything for you, sweetie.

Horatio felt even worse than he did. He lied to her about where he was last night and he conveniently forgot to mention the hug he shared with a woman whom Janice did not know he was in love with.

Horatio: Sweetheart, I, uh...is it alright if I take a raincheck on lunch today? My sister-in-law and nephew want to have lunch with me.
Janice: No problem. I think it's great that you want to spend so much time with your nephew. You should bring him by sometime.
Horatio: I think I can arrange that.

----

When Ray Jr. saw the familiar grey Hummer pull up to the restaurant, his eyes lit up.

Ray Jr.: Uncle Horatio!!!

Ray Jr. ran over to where the Hummer was parked and gave Horatio a big hug when he got out.

Ray Jr.: Uncle Horatio, I've missed you so much!!!

Horatio was glad to see his nephew. The boy had grown into a tall teenager, almost his mother's height now. He looked happy and that was assuring to Horatio.

Horatio: How've you been buddy?
Ray Jr: I've been good. I'm back in school here now. But, things aren't exactly good between Mom and Dad.
Horatio: I know.

Ray Jr nodded and Horatio sensed he didn't want to talk about it.

Horatio: Where's your Mom?
Ray Jr (pointing to one of the tables): She's over there.

They made their way to the table where Yelina was seated. She looked beautiful as always to Horatio. He took a seat opposite her, and Ray Jr plonked himself down next to his mother.

Horatio: Hi. Hope you managed to get some rest last night.

Yelina: I got a little bit. You look like you didn't.
Horatio (chuckling): None whatsoever.
Yelina: Was...Janice...mad you stayed out so late?
Horatio: Not at all. More concern than anything.

Yelina nodded. She knew it was going to be an uncomfortable lunch. Hopefully Ray Jr. would make it a little easier by getting Horatio up to speed with his teenage life.

Ray Jr.: Hey, Uncle Horatio, Mom tells me that you have a new girlfriend.
Horatio: Uh, yeah buddy, an old friend from college. We're going to be married soon.

Ray Jr. suspected that was the reason why his mother wasn't very happy last night.

Ray Jr.: Oh. What's her name?
Horatio: Janice.
Ray Jr.: Oh. When can I meet her?
Horatio: Soon. She actually wants to meet you and your mom.

Yelina looked over at Horatio, surprised.

Ray Jr.: Really?
Horatio: Really.

----

Yelina had gone to use the restroom, which gave Horatio perfect time to ask Ray Jr. questions that he wouldn't be able to ask Yelina.

Horatio: Hey Ray, do you know where your dad is staying?
Ray Jr.: Yeah, the Bayside Hotel...the one by the courthouse.
Horatio: I know exactly where that is.
Ray Jr.: Why, Uncle Horatio?
Horatio: I just need to ask him about what's going on between him and your mom.
Ray Jr.: Oh. Okay.

Yelina walked back out to their table.

Yelina: I hope you two didn't get too caught up. You should save some for when we meet Janice.
Ray Jr.: When can we meet her, Uncle Horatio?
Horatio: Soon. I'll ask her tonight. For now, though, I have to get back to work.
Ray Jr.: See you soon, Uncle Horatio.
Horatio: Right back at you, buddy.
Yelina: Goodbye, Horatio.
Horatio: See you, Yelina.

Horatio paid for the lunch, then walked to his Hummer and headed for the Bayside Hotel. After using the brass pass to get the number for Ray's hotel, he headed up there and landed a few hard raps on the door.

Raymond: Horatio, what are you...

Horatio grabbed Ray by the collar and throwing him back into his room, slammed the door behind him.

Raymond: Horatio, what the hell?
Horatio: I guess the saying is true: once a cheater, always a cheater.

Raymond stood up and threw a clenched fist toward Horatio, who deftly blocked it with his hand, then threw Raymond back down again.

Horatio: Maybe I'm not making myself clear.
Raymond: What? About me cheating on Yelina?

This is getting ineteresting!
Fight, fight, fight!!!
Oh, sorry ...but Ray deserves it!

Great updates!! :D

I was wondering where you went Tati. But glad you all dropped by and like the fic so far. :D

Horatio: What did you think this was about?

Horatio stood face-to-face with his little brother.

Horatio: I sent you guys there for a fresh start -
Raymond: Oh yeah big brother always fixes things, You're here to fix things between Yelina and me. How noble of you. You're the perfect one and I'm always the screw up. I've got news for you Horatio, it takes two to clap. She kept talking about you when we were there. You think I don't know what went on between you and my wife when I was undercover?
Horatio: I will not let you insult Yelina like that. Nothing went on between us Ray.
Raymond: It doesn't matter. Whatever you say she wants nothing to me anymore. We're getting a divorce.

Ray stood up and threw another punch at Horatio, catching him on the cheek. Horatio staggered back. Horatio grabbed Ray's collar and pinned him to the wall.

Horatio: You cheated on her. She deserves much better than you.
Raymond: Much better than me, like you?!
Horatio: No, better than me.

Horatio knew there was nothing more to say to Ray. Things seemed beyound repair between Ray and Yelina. Horatio left the hotel feeling no better than when he had stepped in there.

That evening he met Janice for dinner. The punch Ray had threw at him now was an angry looking bruise. He hoped his sunglasses hid it from view. He took a seat at the table with Janice and ordered their dinners. He kept his sunglasses on.

Horatio: I'm sorry about last night. I'll make it up to you later.

Janice: I'm not worried about that, honey. Why do you still have your sunglasses on?

Once she removed the sunglasses, however, she got her answer.

Janice: Horatio, when did this happen? Are you okay?
Horatio: I'm fine. Turns out, Yelina and Raymond are having marital problems, and I went to go talk to him about it.
Janice: And he hit you?
Horatio: Let's just say it got a little heated.
Janice: What's going on?

Horatio took a deep sigh.

Horatio: Raymond...cheated on her back in Rio.
Janice: Oh my god.
Horatio: Yeah. I went to confront him about it and he took a shot at me.
Janice: Is Yelina alright?
Horatio: Looks like it. She's more concerned for Ray Jr. than anyone else.
Janice: That's good. When shall we have the two of them over?

Horatio ducked his head. Janice reached across the table and took his hand.

Horatio: She's having a hard time about all this.
Janice: Surely you don't think it's your fault.
Horatio: I should have known Ray wouldn't change his ways. I shouldn't have sent them to Rio and subject her and the boy to all this.
Janice: It's their marriage. You did what you thought was best for them.
Horatio: I wish I could do more. I want to... I want to help Yelina and Ray Jr through all this. I'm just really disappointed in Ray. It isn't the first time he's done this.

Janice rubbed his fingers with her thumb.

Janice: If you wanna spend more time with Yelina and Ray Jr, I'd understand.

Horatio looked up. He was grateful for her understanding, and yet he felt guilty, more than wanting to help Yelina through all this, he wanted to be with her.

Horatio: Yeah I'd like to do that. Thanks sweetheart.
Janice: Hey they're going to be my family too. When they're ready you can ask them round. I'll cook them dinner.
Horatio: Actually Ray Jr wanted to meet you. Maybe we can have them over for dinner tomorrow?

Janice smiled. Ray Jr. sounded like the perfect nephew.

Janice: That would be nice.
Horatio: I'm sure they'll love you.

----

As Janice was putting the finishing touches to dinner in the kitchen, Horatio sat with Yelina and Ray Jr. in the living room, engaged in random discussion. Janice watched as Horatio watched Yelina closely every time she talked, and tried to think nothing of it.
They're just good friends, that's all, Janice told herself.
As Horatio and Yelina continued to converse, they started to get more and more comfortable with each other and even smiled at one another every now and then. Janice got more and more uncomfortable.

Janice: Dinner's ready!!!
