"Family Affair" Tenth Season Premiere Discussion *SPOILERS*

Well I finally watched and I liked it. I thought the conversation with Sara and Catherine was very refreshing. I think the whole shebang about Sara fixing the fractured team wa a little presumptious. I think what really went on in that scene was Sara gave an 'outsiders' (for lack of a better word) perspective on a beleagured Catherine.

Catherine's really struggilng at the beginning and it shows, Sara just gave her a nudge and suggested she delegate some of her tasks as Grissom did. It was well done.

Ray was just perfect, not too much, not too little.

I like how the marriage was handled, very understated. I'm not surprised the arc went into that direction.

And Nick was fine as usual.

When Grew blew up, I thought, "Well it's about time Greggo said something." He was justified in blowing up, although, perhaps the timing was off but it sounds as if the character had had enough.

Great episode. I don't like the music very much though. I find it too quiet.

ETA: I know I'll get in trouble for this but why did I get the impression Greg fans squeed when he said, "They took my bum?!";):guffaw:

True people do get stressed out and tend to yell and complain more when they do. I should really know that in the job I work. As I rewatch the scene with Greg now I guess I can see him finally just at the end of his rope with how he is being treated as a CSI who does have seniority. I guess they just really wanted to show how "fractured" the team is feeling with everyone sniping at each other. I did appreciate Ray's respect for Greg in that scene, willing to step off the case.

Dizzney you and Byline make excellent points. Under those type of circumstances, stress, being shorthanded, everyone overworked, tired, etc. anyone and everyone would act out of character.

I'm normally a very level head person, but at my job, when we're on deadline and I'm down people, man, leave me alone. I can and do get very testy (well, if you had to deal with the children...errrrr...account execs, you would too).

All of us act out of character numerous times in our life, so what happened between Nick, Greg, and Catherine, and Catherine and Nick is normal. Out of character, maybe yes, but that's normal and that's life.

I agree that Ray stepping up to say he'd take the case was very classy of him. Ray knows his place, even if he forgets it sometimes.

As for Nick whining in the past, Grissom didn't let him get away with it either. However, he didn't act like Greg did. Even in the episode 'Evaulation' he waited until everyone walked out of the office to talk to Grissom about. He didn't blowup, nor did he question his Supervisor's authority in front of everyone. I think that was what Nick was trying to get across to him. However, Nick probably should have stayed out of it, but they had to show the problems that were going on in the team.

Actually he was a little whiny in A Bullet Runs Through it. The scene was when they were all standing in the circle and he complained when Grissom sent him off to do the bullet casings trail. Then later on he whined a bit when Grissom finally came back to him and he asked if he was the only one still working.

I don't think that was whiny. I think he was annoyed that he was having to do such a big job by himself because gathering all of those casings (as much shooting as went on in that ep) would take just one person forever. It was probably hot outside and he figured if there were a couple more people on it too then it would not take as long.

I guess looking back on that he has complained a little but I think what I really did not like was when he got into with Nick by saying "Who asked you?" That just did not feel like something Greg would say to Nick. Maybe Hodges  but not Nick.

Yeah he has a little, but never just completely blown up. He's always done it with a much calmer voice (except with Mrs. James, but she totally deserved it anyway lol). And I agree that what he said to Nick was out of character as was Nick's insulting little comment toward him. Nick would have never embarassed anyone, let alone Greg by saying something like that in front of other colleagues. Its just not his style, period. As someone else stated, he would have been more likely to pull Greg aside and say something. But they had Nick acting like the older brother trying to embarass his younger brother in front of his friends. That didn't suit Nick at all.

They got whipped in the ratings by Grey's :(

That's probably only because of the cliffhanger last season and those who don't read spoilers wanted to see who lived and who died.

I don't see how everyone is upset about Greg being upset. He's stressed. They're stressed. Everyone's stressed. People get upset.

I'm not upset about Greg being upset. I'm upset by the words that Nick and Greg said to each other. They were out of character, stressed or not. I've seen them both stressed before and they do not talk to each other like that. If it had been Hodges and Greg, I could have seen it... but Nick and Greg have never ever ever disrespected each other in that manner before EVER.

ETA: I know I'll get in trouble for this but why did I get the impression Greg fans squeed when he said, "They took my bum?!";):guffaw:

LMAO! I didn't even see that scene that way. I rarely think outside the box like that. I just saw it as it was meant.

Again, I had no problem with Greg getting mad and speaking out (because he's always been fairly good at holding his tongue), so his complaining to Catherine is not what bothered me at all. It was the exact choice of words both he and Nick said. I expected Nick to say something, but to belittle Greg like that in front of everyone was not very Nick-like. That's what was out of character. Nick would have said something more like "Greg, we're short-handed, man. Just do what you're told." as opposed to "stop whining". Nick absolutely hated it when Grissom said that exact thing to him and I do not and will not ever believe that Nick would turn around and do the same thing to someone else regardless of the circumstances.

However, we still got hosed by Grey's (6.6/17.06) -- although I expected that because Grey's actually had 1 hell of a season finale and that made people want to tune in to the premiere.
I can't imagine that's going to last, unless the folks over at "Grey's" make some big changes. I used to watch the show regularly, but was so frustrated by last season's premiere that I pretty much stopped watching. But then I did tune in to the last part of the season finale, and was intrigued. Since I'm in Canada, I'm able to watch "CSI" at 8 p.m., followed by "The Office" at 9 p.m. Since "The Office" is only a half-hour show, I tuned in to "Grey's" to see what was happening. What a mess! Talk about people behaving out-of-character . . . and stridently so. I realize they're supposed to be dealing with stages of grieving, yadda, yadda, yadda, but it was very unbelievable to me.

And I'm reading similar grousing over on the IMDb forum. With several actors playing main characters apparently leaving for brief stretches (or so I've read), it's either going to change for the better or get drastically worse. Somehow, given what I saw last night, I'm not holding out much hope for it getting better. I think "Grey's" heyday is long behind it. Can't say I'd be brokenhearted by that, seeing how it's "CSI"'s crosstown rival.

I think that was what Nick was trying to get across to him.

Completely different circumstances though. Nick hadn't been holding all of that in for years either. It was one particular circumstance that led him to speak out. Greg has been feeling like he's been treated like the new guy for years and he's held all of that in and not said anything. There comes a point where when you've been holding something in for so long, you just can't any longer and it just comes shooting out without warning, so that part of it was realistic and fine. It's the comments Nick and Greg made specifically to/about each other that don't sit well with me as something that is in character for either of them.

Nick waiting to be alone with Grissom to voice his complaints is further proof that Nick wouldn't say something to Greg in front of everyone else, he would pull him aside and say something. It's not in Nick's character to ever embarass anyone like that. Remember back in Stalker when Nick was a little upset with Greg about the fliers? He took the time to go find Greg when Greg was alone and confronted him then (rather than in front of others).

Great episode. I don't like the music very much though. I find it too quiet.

There was music?

Cath probably would have been better off telling the team about the trash run case and asking if anyone wanted to volunteer to take it. Or maybe they should all start drawing straws to see who gets the crap job so that Greg doesn't feel like it's always him. Leave it up to chance, you know?

Just watched the episode from the beginning okay I have to agree Greg and Nick snapping at each other did seem a bit out of character. I don't think he would snap at Greg like that in front of everybody else. Though Greg snapping back at Nick seemed slightly justified to me cause of the fact Nick kinda jumped into the conversation and made a comment about Greg "whining" i think that would tick anybody off.

Also I loved the opening was cool and something new, although I did want to laugh at Nick's facial expression though  and I liked the scene at the beginning of Nick being a little bit afraid of the spider at first, and then later how he isn't afraid of it. Also loved how they ended the episode kinda mysterious now I want to know what they saw in the body.

I loved the way Catherine described the scene to Ecklie. "Just a spirited debate among colleagues." :guffaw: That made me chuckle.

I loved the opening sequence, I really did. Nick's expression still makes me laugh as does Catherine's.

One thing though: Did the guy with Catherine who got shot die or what? And what about that blonde lab person? It looked like she might have gotten shot too. Did she die? It was all a bit confusing.

I just rewatched the episode. GNRF, I see where you're coming from. However, I still see nothing wrong with what Greg said. Catherine was excusable, Greg was justifiable, Ray was understanding. Nick was the one off. In fact, I found myself liking Sara (SARA of all people ) more than Nick in that ep. He pushed Greg, Greg pushed back. I agree that both comments were out of character, but Nick was the instigator. They seemed to be fine at the end. No hard feelings between the two so whatever was eating at them is hopefully gone now.

And somebody said (I forget who) that the lab personnel who were injured were going to be okay.

And is the office occupied by just Nick and Greg now?

Yeah that was the nice way to describe it. In the episode though I think its Catherine that says their people were stable so I'm pretty sure they both lived, and yep the guy with Catherine did get shot at least I'm pretty sure. And now that you mention though Catherine's expression in the opening was kinda funny to.

Unfortunately we had a power outage, and it came in and out so I had to re-watch it this morning on CBS, but no commercials so~~~

SPECTACULAR The visual and graphics were sensational big kudoes to who put that together. 48 hrs earlier..Nick and the tarantula:lol: so he's taken on his fascination of creepy crawlers from his mentor and EWWW:(

Cath and Sara and thier little pep talk, "baseball" Cath: 'baseball' Sara: "when you're MARRIED, you learn to enjoy what your spouse likes" Cath [I was a bit surprised she said nothing] and only smiled, how about "congratulations" how Sara convinced she was a great CSI and other Grissom related talk~

Back to the lab. the shooting and Nick asking Sara , "are you alright" completed chaos, so it was the Russian mafia?

The wood chipper scene EWWW, gross, and Nick and Sara enjoying a giggle fest upon examning, the disgusting body pieces. Like old times;)

Tom O' Neil did it, and Sara and Langston in tune with one another, I knew they would be

All in all I thought it was riveting and fast paced, and can't believe the writers keep coming up with incredible stories, hats off to the whole team of writers and our fabulous cast~:bolian:

And sad but true "Grey's Anatomy" beat out CSI 17.1 million to ours 15.7... Zap2it.com

I stopped watching CSI after "Mascara" because I couldn't take it more: I had been gradually falling out of love with the show since season 6, althought I tried really hard to give it another chance first without Sara (my favourite character), then Warrick and finally Grissom.
I wanted to be fair so I tried my best to give the show and the new characters more chances, but after "For Warrick" it wasn't the same anymore. I never liked Riley and I don't find Ray interesting at all, even though I think LF is a very fine actor. I've only watched two episodes since the 200th ("If I had a hammer" and "A space oddity") but after reading the reviews I know I haven't missed much.

So now I can say that I'm beyond thrilled for this episode. There's hope again. Now I'm crossing my fingers that the new direction the show has taken continues when Sara leaves again.

I don't think the team was that messed up. And I'm not sure it's very nice to have Riley say those things. It's not going to endear her character to anyone really. I mean she never stood a chance and they use her as a reason to show why the team was all out of sorts. I don't know, just doesn't seem fair to LLS.

That's the first thing I thought and it's still bothering me. It's really a disservice to LLS to make her character so unappealing after she has left. I don't like the way it was handled, even though I'm really happy to see Riley gone. I think it was unnecesary if the actress wasn't there to defend her character.

Nick touching a spider? :shifty: and one of Grissom's tarantula's has been lurking around the lab for how many years? :wtf:

That was the best part of the episode. I'm still trying to figure out why Grissom didn't turn the place upside down to find his little creeper.

Hey, this looks cool. Thank god no one dodged bullets Matrix style, that would have been overkill.

I'm not a fan of Matrix so I found the first scenes very very silly, but I know it's a popular style with many fans so I'm probably alone in this. Thankfully, it was just a few scenes and didn't detract from the rest of the episode, so I'll give it a pass

I am actually quite shocked that the original CSI is having the least amount of discussion out of all three shows. Hmm.

Well, some fans left the show after Sara and Warrick left because they were their favourite characters and didn't care about the rest. After Grissom left, many fans that were waiting to see how the show did with the new team also stopped watching because they felt that Grissom was CSI and nobody could replace him. And others, like myself, tried to watch and tried to adjust but never liked the "Ray show" and switched to other things. I know a lot of people that stopped watching when Grissom left and reconnected with CSI:Miami and CSI:NY so in my experience it's not shocking. Let's hope this season there's more to talk about.

Nick: Seeing him with the spider, being a little scared, I liked that. It could just be that he's got some trepidation about touching a spider, but I want to see it as a throw back to "Grave Danger".

I was actually surprised that he was so comfortable around bugs but from what I've read last season he started to become a bugman himself, so I guess "Grave Danger" is long forgotten.

I don't remember liking an episode that much since season 8, so my rating: B+

Ecklie and Cath, he's so mean to everyone and does the guy ever smile?

On the Season 9 DVD set, there's a deleted scene where Ecklie tells Greg he's been promoted to CSI 3 and Greg does a little fist pump outside the office door like "yay!" and Ecklie sees him and smiles. It's really nice. :D

That big hug smilie is too cute. :)

I'm assuming there was a conference call where the newlyweds told the team they were married. I'm sure the congratulations came then. Cath did say something back to Sara though. It sounded like "okay. It's just a different side of you." or something like that. I think Catherine's just happy to see that Sara is finally happy and all smiles. It's a different side of her that they're not that used to. :)

And may I just reiterate how much I just loved Sara in this episode? She was awesome! Like a breath of fresh air. I have a renewed respect and love for the character now.

And also a plus that I absolutely loved Ray in this episode as well. I loved the respect he showed to Greg and just his interactions with the team in general. I loved how well the screentime was balanced out. Kudos once again to tptb for that! :)

Catherine: That's a weird side of you.
Sara: I know

Ok, I'm not Sara fan, but she was ok in this episode. I did like the scene with her and Nick laughing. I wonder how many lemons they had to shower with this time.

GNRF I appreciate you analysis of Sara and Langston, he was awesome I like him, he's sweet, and smart and does a hell of job, And Sara was burnt out and that little psycho Hannah drove her to the brink of insanity, so she left go healthy and happy [who wouldn't be happy with Grissom in Paris] and she used to be like this in her early days, she was fabulous, they all were, I loved it so much. So many twists and turns and how great were Doc and Brass:lol:Great episode~
