Episode 9x02 - 'Sudden Death' ***CONTAINS SPOILERS***

Overall I thought it was an ok episode. I am not hip to the club scene but the whole premise of bottle girls was quite odd to me. Horatio seemed to be attracted to Sarah and I thought he got way more invested in her than he should have.

When it comes to CSI shows, I thought Mac Taylor gets overly aggressive, but Horatio takes the cake. He needs to chill out a bit. He is grumpy all the time it seems. But don't get me wrong, I am not bashing the show but his character frustrates me.

And goodness that chase scene in the begining was so freaking long! In the real world the cops, would've been coughing from the running or would've just shot or tased the perp before running all around that area. It bored me and I wondered why the writers didn't use their time better.

I doubt they will - Hawaii Five-O is in that sport now. I don't mind that it's on Sundays, but last night everything was on an hour delay, normally I watch the Amazing Race & Undercover Boss - but last night I also watched 60 minutes since they were so behind.


I couldn't imagine spending $21,000 in one night on drinks. It's shocking that so many people would be able to afford a place like that on any sort of regular basis.

I did like that the quarterback told Erica Sykes (spelling?) off at the end, and suggested that her priorities were not in order.

Also, I'm assuming that Eric & Calleigh are over now.
 
After last week's episode, this one was kind of ... eh? :shifty:

First, is anyone else becoming very tired of seeing H becoming so overprotective of these "really hot" young women w/kids? It used to be OK, but now it's starting to get a little creepy to me. He needs to get a girlfriend who can stand up for herself, although I don't know how H would handle that - he seems to only connect w/people that NEED him. Don't get me wrong, I love Horatio, but his overprotectiveness in this ep. was weird, especially the end where the perp. goes: "This is really about Sara, isn't it." At that point I would expect H to say, "No, it's about you killing a young girl." But instead he tells him not to go near Sara - I mean, the dude is going to jail and Sara is going out-of-state, so was that really necessary?

I think TPTB should really focus on why Horatio gets this way - it's a pattern w/him that's actually psychologically interesting. It's always young women w/children. Is it b/c he sees in them the family he never had. Or is it b/c he sees in them his own mother - Gosh, how I would LOVE that storyline to come back. I really want to see flashbacks of H protecting his mom, or H holding a pic of his mom, b/c it seems like everything he does is motivated by what happened back in NY when he was a kid - even the whole Marisol thing.

Anyhow, back to the episode. I really liked the Eric/Ryan teaming for once - it was very brotherly. The chase was a bit long, but I loved seeing "The Hardy Boys" together again.! :thumbsup: It was also great to see them watching the Erica Sykes thing on TV together - maybe Eric is lightening up on Ryan a bit, which to me is good and refreshing. Ryan did help hold down the fort while Eric was gone, so maybe Eric respects him more now.

And Erica Sykes - yikes! :eek: Glad it wasn't as bad for Ryan as I thought it'd be - hope we don't see her again - she's really become worse than ever.

As has been said, the way they solved the crime was kind of far-fetched - I mean, what are the chances the chipped crown ends up in the guy's pocket - I was like :rolleyes: - seriously, after the police came you think he'd have the sense to ditch the jacket.

I did like the team interaction - everyone seemed really "in sync" w/each other and I loved it that they weren't "paired off" like they have been - very refreshing. Although I have to say I was disappointed that H didn't have scenes w/any of his team - did anyone else notice that? I really hate it when H is distant from them, and I guess that's one of the reasons I thought the episode was so bland.

As for the E/C thing at the end - :wtf: Personally, I wish this would be the end of it, but I have a feeling TPTB are just draggin this thing out even more, which doesn't make either side of the fence happy. Even though I personally don't like E/C, that scene didn't make a lot of sense to me, esp. since they had already "crossed the line" in the bedroom - a little more explanation and closure would've been helpful. I liked the scene as a whole b/c I've always felt that way about E/C (that they love each other "like family", but not in a romantic way), but after all TPTB have put them through, it just didn't have the kind closure I would've liked. Anyhow, I suppose we'll see...I dont' think it was aired out of order, though, if I remember the spoiler boards correctly...

I agree and this coming from someone who loved the foot chase in Casino Royale which was long too. The difference in the two is that Casino's chase was a little interesting and had some twists and bumps but this one just seemed like them showing the three running down the street in different angles. When the guy jumped onto the stairwell, I was kind of hoping Ryan would do the same to break the boredom.

I agree and didn't care for it last night (though my dislike of the episode may have something to do with it) I'm assuming he wants to make sure the victims are taken care because its possible he had nowhere to go when he was young because of his personal circumstances and doesn't want the same fate to befall others.

I doubt they will - Hawaii Five-O is in that sport now. I don't mind that it's on Sundays

And Hawaii is doing quite well so I hear. However I hate Miami being on Sundays.
 
This one seemed to be the typical second episode filler - it was ok.

The screentime was well-balanced & the teamwork was great, so kudos for that.

Obviously the only thing that Erica has changed is her hairstyle, she's still the same ol' ratt. "Wow. A jackal." Too funny. :lol: I'm glad Ryan got to see it.

One nit-picky issue -- are there not hand-dryers in the men's room? I kept wondering why they just HAD to go to the ladies room, or why Walter thought he needed to follow Natalia in there to begin with. Buddy system, I guess? Despite all that, it was funny seeing Walter squirm & pace the bathroom floor. :lol:

Looking forward to next week's episode. :p

ETA: I forgot to mention the new ME, Dr. Mercier. To be quite honest, I kept wanting to look at her as Warrick's wife so it was a tad wierd for me. She reminds me a little too much of Tara as well. She'll take some getting used to.

I found this a decent eppie even though it was delayed an hour in CST.

--IMHO, I thougth an effort was made to even out everyone's screentime; more Ryan and Natalia this week. I love it when everyone works with everyone else; Eric/Ryan, Ryan/Walter, Walter/Natalia, etc. And the team brainstorming as well:thumbsup:

--New ME is okay. Would rather have Tom though.

--Thought Walter's discomfort in the ladies room pretty funny.

--Think they are doing a pretty decent job of hiding EP's pregnancy. And I agree; she glows:thumbsup:

--OMG, Erika Sykes. Yuck and double yuck. I was cringing waiting for Ryan's reaction to her and he acted as if she was a pretty unpleasant surprise. And nothing changed; she digging for information:rolleyes::scream:

--Dave Benton working with Ryan. I got a good chuckle out of the "smig" "tad" give and take.

--Mike Travers. I like him clean shaven.

--Why do people insist on fighting H when wants them to do something? He had that look and tone of voice that make me want to dive under my couch;)

--Peta Wilson made a pretty sleezy club owner.

--Glad to see Brady innocent. I was actually cheering when he called Erika out. (She's not a "journalist" but a "jackal"). I don't think on the entire time she's been on the show, she's never been called out on the air.

Like Natalia completely drying a cell phone with a bathroom hand-dryer. Having had the unfortunate experience of dropping my cell phone in a running bathroom sink for less than 5 seconds (as opposed to having it soaking overnight in a pool on the eppy itself), I know that it takes nothing short of a miracle to be able to retrieve anything from a cell phone that has come into contact with water. So the writers kind of lost me there.

While it is very difficult to retrieve data, it isn't impossible. My cell got soaked and after it dried out, I got the information back. It didn't work the best and the camera was shot but I got my contacts back.

All in all an okay eppie.
 
Pretty average episode.
I enjoyed the chase scene at the beginning, even if it was alittle long. But how does H always know where to go to catch them?! He seems to have a knack for it.

I also found his 'protecting' of the bottle girl, Sarah and her kid a bit cringeworthy.
Miamirocks- I agree that it would be fascinating to see some kind of explanation for this, some link to H's parents and why he is as he is. Unfortunately that is all too deep for these writers.
It didnt help that, in my opinion, the actress who played Sarah wasnt all that good. She just come across as rather annoying to me. It is true that almost every female victim/potential victim in this show is needy and useless. They never fight back on there own, without H's help. It has gotten very predictable.

Nice bit of teamwork going on. And apart from Calleigh, an equal amount of screentime. Good to see more Frank and Natalia than we are used to.

Ryan and Eric did come across as more 'friendly' than usual. Nice to see.

I really liked Ryan's scene with Dave with the camera and the 'smidge' and 'tad.' Glad tptb kept Dave on the show, I really like the character.

The return of Erica was no where near as bad as I thought it might be. She did look strange with the new hairstyle. Thought it was funny when she was speechless, good to see her put in her place. Hopefully they arent going to start anything more up with her and Ryan.

Eric and Calleigh. What on earth is going on there? Ive never been a fan of the relationship, but part of the reason for that is that I hate romances on tv that faff around so much. One minute together, then there not. I wish tptb would just make up their minds and either make them a couple or split them up for good. This messing around with fans just annoys both sides of the E/C divide. And it didnt make any sense........
 
About the episode, it wasn't that bad! I enjoyed the storyline and some scenes are quite memorable..Erica speechless is something to remember.

What I have to say is that I am actually not that surprise of what happened within Eric and Calleigh, maybe what could surprise us is that for the first time writers remembered what continuity is! I mean, we left them after Eric had lied to Calleigh, wearing a wire and the whole investigation thing without telling the person he was living with (or at least it looked like that)..we know all Calleigh issues with trusting a person and I could not believe that the little sunset scene at the end of episode 8x23 had solved the whole thing. Calleigh is a daughter of an alcoholic, she has never had great luck with relationships and she does not trust people easily, because people (and Eric has done that a lot!) tend to disappoint her. If writers wanted to put them through some other hell tests, at least they choose the best reason...as a no-shipper person who just love to watch CSI:MIami the way it is I am seeing continuity, for once writers have a point...
 
All in all I enjoyed this episode. The focus seems to be back where it should be – on the victim, the science and the team - all of them.

The chase at the beginning went on far too long. Lots of fancy camera work to generate excitement, but in the end it took too much time. And while the scene between Eric and Ryan was a promising start to a possible change in their dynamic, I’m not holding my breath. Eric has a horrible track record related to his treatment of Ryan and what I see today could change dramatically the minute Ryan does something Eric doesn’t like.

I was a little unhappy with how Frank and Eric responded to Brady Jensen’s request that they not parade him in front of the press. Jensen was right. He was innocent until proved guilty and just because Frank and Eric felt he was guilty didn’t give them the right to purposely expose him to the press. Uncalled for – and while Jensen made some bad choices, he certainly wasn’t guilty of murder. Where were Frank and Eric with the apology? I really do get tired of the legal system being made a media circus when it comes to people who are media magnets.

Didn’t see enough of Dr. Mercier to decide if I like her or not. She seemed pleasant enough. And she and Eric just seemed to be friends. He called her “Victoria.” Men and women can be friends. Just because she smiled at Eric and he was nice to her is no reason to jump to conclusions about her intentions. I saw no “flirting” at all in her interactions with Eric.

I thought the scene with Natalia and Walter in the ladies room was cute! I think the reason they went to the ladies room instead of the men’s room is because the idea was Natalia’s. And I don’t think Natalia would have been as uncomfortable in the men’s room as Walter was in the women’s so it was a much funnier moment in the women's restroom.

**sigh** Horatio and Sara – I think I’ll save that for last.

The scenes with Ryan and Dave and Travers, Walter and Ryan, just like the earlier scene with Natalia and Walter, are the scenes I love to watch on this show. So far the team interaction is promising this season. Team members are getting decent screen time and we’re seeing them working together for the common good – to solve the case. As someone else said, I’d like to see Horatio a little more hands on with his team. He still has some ways to go in that area.

I breathed a sigh of relief that Erica Sikes wasn't a huge issue for Ryan. He did a great job dealing with her and Brady Jensen did a wonderful job putting her in her place. I wish he'd been able to say a word or two to Frank and Eric.

As for E/C, I can only hope that they writers aren't toying with us and it's finally over.

We’re still not getting away from every case having to involve the “Rich and Famous.” Why can’t we get back to cases that affect REAL people? This show’s stories are nothing more than an extension of what we see on any entertainment magazine show you can watch. I’m tired of watching shows about irresponsible, spoiled rich people. I’d like to see some real people get some justice for a change.

Now to Horatio. While it was established a long time ago that he has a serious commitment to helping the victims in these cases, for some reason they’ve decided that these “victims” can only be extremely attractive, very helpless, young women. They are usually single and can be childless or have young children. Whatever serves to make the story more dramatic - or at least dramatic in the eyes of the writers of this show. These writers truly need to get out more or stop watching their freaking soap operas as their only means of trying to connect with life.

While that type of victim is not a bad idea every once in a while, it starts to be a disservice to Horatio after a while as it serves to make him appear a “dirty old man” or a psycho with a fetish for this type of woman.

What happened to Horatio helping victims like Belle King. A strong, professional woman who was equal to Horatio in intellect and commitment. (She is the type of companion/partner they need to set Horatio up with.) What about the heartfelt sympathy he gave to Mrs. Colucci in “Golden Parachute?”

TPTB are so wrapped up in making sure that every victim and every perp is out of this world beautiful that normal people – people that most viewers would actually identify and connect with are non-existent. They appear to have made some changes this season and if they are truly committed to getting back to the core of the team, maybe they should also think about getting back to victims who are more real to the viewers.

Give Horatio some victims to help who aren’t young, hot, helpless, clingy, whiny, women. Give him some victims who are strong, confident men and women who have been shaken to their core by the circumstance that has brought Horatio and his team into their life. They simply need his strength and confidence to assure them it will be alright and they will get their life back!

Not really going to get into the debate of wether you like c/e or not but i have to say the scene with them made no sense. I think for once both sides can agree that this made no sense. Last we saw it looked like caleigh was going to give eric another try. The scene looked like we missed something like coming in at the end of the movie and wondering what happened. I actually like them not when they take over the show but it adds something of a human element but if they want to end them then at least make it make sense. It just was really confusing which makes me think they are far from over but i do think the writers need to make a decision i really am not sure where they are going with this but i have a feeling they are going somewhere.

When did this happen? Who the hell knows, but just as tptb like to show people "getting together" off screen, they're just as good at breaking them up off screen as well.

Personally, I do not care when, where or how -- the show needs to get back to basics anyway...family & team is what's supposed to be important, as this is a crime-solving drama, not a relationship-solving drama.

Amen, sister! :) Hopefully the direction of the show is turning more toward the "family" aspect again...I really miss the good ol' days of Seasons 1-3. Remember when the team actually talked to each other? And H actually was a father figure and not so distant? Well, I really hope they're getting back to that and away from all this "drama" of the past three years - I love seeing Eric and Ryan banter, and Nat and Walter have a laugh, etc. The team interaction in last night's ep. was quite good - hope it continues!
 
I don't ship anybody on any of the CSI shows, but the only thing I dislike more than ships on crime dramas, is poor writing. And the Eric + Calliegh lockerroom scene in last nite's episode made no sense at all. God knows I'd like nothin more than to see those 2 break up, but if the writers are goin to do it, they need to do it properly and decisively. I don't watch CSI Miami to have my intelligence insulted. :rolleyes: Enuf with the wishy-washy crap already!:scream:
 
I didn't mind Horatio helping another wayward, beautiful, young woman with son who has obviously mad a poor career choice. It's true to his character- it seems like there is some jealousy afoot in some of these responses. Miami is all about the *beautiful people* it's part of what sells the show in addition to the reddy-kilowatt coloring of the city. If people don't like that, then they really don't like Miami.

When he looks at the son and when he's telling him to protect his mom, he's seeing himself as the protector of his own mother- I didn't mind it at all. He didn't come on to this woman nor talk down to her; I think he talked some common sense to her and that's good- she needed it.

As for a girlfriend, we'll have to see what happens- if we want a mature partner (I'm game for that- why not let Yelina come back?) The two have great chemistry and beauty together and it would be nice to see Yelina put her widowhood behind her as well as Horatio allow himself to love someone that would understand his work and that a part of him wants to love very much without guilt.

I liked the pace of this episode, don't like Horatio wearing the same clothing every time though- hope that will change. As for Peta Wilson- wow did she ever I have to say it go to seed since La Femme Nikita. I know the actress near the end of that show said that she "felt clucky" some sort of Aussie slang for wanting to have children but why did she let herself GO ? It was a shock to the system to say the least ( won't be seeing her sliding down any garbage shoots in the near future...)
 
After watching the episode and reading everyone's comments, I decided to add my bit.

*Really liked most of the episode, but maybe not as much as last week's one. However, very nice and original story I thought, death by Champagne, and I also liked when Eric and Natalia talked about delayed drowing.

* The fact that the murderer still had the crown of the tooth in his jacket was a BIT implausible but not quite. He couldn't have known it was in there and everybody doesn't wash their jacket everytime they go to a club I guess.

* Wow, 20000 dollars on drinks - a different planet!

* Loved the chase scene at the beginning and the part where Ryan told that guy 'this is not a bed and breakfast joint to come and go as you please'. Ha ha. So funny. It was also funny when he said at the end that he has not seen Erica speechless b4.

* Also very nice how Travers used found the age of the Champagne using carbon 14 dating. Actually, my favorite part of the Epi together with the explanation of the delayed drowning bit. How Horatio used the confetti as a clue was also good.

* I am not sure about drying a mobile with a hairdryer. My friend dropped hers in the toilet bowl for a minute and it ceased to work but I bet she never tried drying it so I don't know if it would have worked or not.

* The new M.E. was nice and yes, she reminded me of Tara alot.

* I wasn't too excited about Horatio's 'relationship' with this girl Sara but wasn't too bothered by it either.

* The episode was just fine until the 37th minute. WTH was that dialogue in the locker room? 1stly, I thought I missed an epi and actually went back and checked the epi guide. Whether one likes the couple or not, that was really vague. The episode would have been just perfect if that scene was not there altogether. Was its point to imply that these 2 are no longer together? After 8-23 , 8-24 and 9-01, it didn't make any sense whatsoever. I absolutely hate it when I can't make sense of a scene. My other favorite show together with CSIM at this time is Grey's anatomy and that has several couples and I am neutral to all of them but if something like this happened there, I would be quite annoyed as well. There, the couples break up and make up all the time but if they've broken up, the audience is very clear on why that is. I know CSIM is not a soap (neither is Grey's and they have some excellent medical cases) but if the writers spent so much time trying to hook up EC in the 1st place, then they should surely not leave them hanging or us hanging with this vague comment. In CSI NY, Danny and Lindsay have very few scenes together, except for working together in season 6 (haven't watched 7 yet), but its very clear that they are still together so there is no need to keep rubbing it in so as to say. So for me, the script yesterday was a bit like an exam paper where a student wrote the paper extremely well until he or she came to the very last bit and had a mini brain block so decided to write some random stuff that didn't fit in with past events or make any sense to anyone reading. I would love to write to the writers and tell them that but I don't know how!
