Head of the Graveyard Shift
When the house was quiet. Michael tiptoed to his sisters room. Opening her door, he walked in and found her asleep. Pulling back her blankets, he crawled in beside her like he use to do when they were little.
"Michael...."came the barest of whispers.
"Shh...it's okay sis, go back to sleep. I'll keep you safe. I promise."
Turning into her brothers arms, she curled her neck under him and fell back to sleep. While she slept. Michael thought about all the times his sister had called him over the last few weeks, but he was always to busy, or had to deal with his wife's death. He now wish he had been there for her, instead of pushing her away.
"Stop that Michael. It's not your fault, you've done nothing wrong."
"Can you quit reading my thoughts sis?"
"I'm sorry, but I can feel you, just like you can feel me."
Michael knew she was right. He could remember growing up how they would finish what each other was thinking, before the other. It was a game they played as kids.
"Michael...are you scared?"
"No. Should I be? Are you?"
"Yeah mic, I'm terrified for my babies."
"Listen Mac, you have nothing to be afraid of. I promise you it will all be over before you know it has even started. Try and get some rest. I promise not to leave you."
Closing her eyes, she fell back into sleep. While Michael tried his best to close off his mind from his sister.
After Mac had explained everything to Stella, she was in tears.
"Come on love, stop now. You are going to make the baby upset, and then we will be rushing you back to the Hospital."
"I just don't get it Mac. How could one of us not noticed anything. I don't get it."
"Sweetheart. It's kind of hard to notice things, when we very rarely seen Scott."
"I understand that. But for our daughter not to tell us. I don't get it?"
"She hardly knew herself what was happening. She had just started noticing the changes in him over the last couple weeks."
"My poor granddaughters. How are they going to understand all this. How are we going to explain to three four year olds, that their father tried to murder them?"
"Stella...please. Trust in me okay. We will get through this. Us Taylor's are strong enough to survive this. I know we are. Now please try and sleep love, for the baby."
"GRRRwwww, Grrrwwwwl."
"What is that Mac. What are they growling at?"
Michael came running into his parents room.
"Dad...there's someone outside, King and Kong are going insane."
Grabbing his housecoat, they headed out the back with the dogs who bolted to the gate.
"Woof, woof, woof, woof."
Get their leashes Michael. I think it's time for a walk around the beach."
Grabbing King and Kong's leash. Mac headed off down the beach leaving the girls alone.
"Dad....I think we should stay here. Come back dad. We need to protect the girls."
"I'm telling you son. They smell him, they are going insane, we need to look."
"I don't care dad. I'm not leaving mom, Mac, or our children alone. Now get back here."
As much as he knew his son was right. Mac pulled the dogs, as they all returned to the house.
"Turn on the alarm son. I'll make more coffee."
"Michael knew what that meant. For the rest of the night, they'd be playing hide and seek with Scott.
