CSI:NY- Love, Loss and Life

*chap30*- One year on

‘Hey Danno, what’s up?’ Flack asked as he walked into the office.

Danny looked up from his report, ‘I’m trying to get this damn report done so I can go home and spend time with my baby girl.’

Flack sat down in the chair opposite Danny, ‘How was baby sitting?’ Danny asked with a smirk.

‘Ahh it was good, we went to the park for a walk after we’d sang ‘pat-a-cake’ a few times,’ the men laughed. Lindsay had recently discovered the rhyme ‘pat-a-cake’ and loved to play it with Flack, ‘It’s not that cold out side you know, considering its just started to snow. Linds laughed all the way here at the snow flakes…’

‘Where is she anyway?’ Danny asked wondering where his daughter had gone.

‘I expect she’s in between here and the elevator,’

‘Poor Stel, you left her holding Lind’s hand all the way here!’ Danny laughed.

‘Oh shut it, it isn’t that far!’ Suddenly the door opened and in walked Stella and Lindsay. Stella was holding her hand as the one year old put one foot in front of the other and giggled as she saw Danny, ‘Daada!’

Danny walked over, ‘Hey baby, did you have fun with Flack and Stell?’

Lindsay giggled and lifted her arms in the air, ‘Updon…’ Danny picked her up.

‘So Danny, what time are we all coming around tomorrow?’ Stella asked

‘Erm, about 12? Is that alright?’ Danny asked as Lindsay started to play with his dog tags.

‘That’s fine Dan, have you told Mac? If not he’s in his office!’ Stella said with a smirk.

‘Yeh I have. It was good for him to sort this day off for the whole team,’ Danny replied.

‘Dan, you know that the nights shift were too happy to take over tomorrow to give us the day off.’

Danny looked down and out of the window avoiding his friends eyes. After a few minutes of silence Flack spoke, ‘Erm Danny we were gonna head off and get pizza you want some?’

‘Nah it’s ok man,’ Danny said deep in thought, ‘you two have a good time.’

Stella stepped forward and gave Danny a hug and whispered, ‘you know where we are Messer!’ Danny nodded as Stella kissed Lindsay, ‘Look after your Daddy sweetheart and we’ll see you tomorrow.’ Lindsay shook her hand in an attempt to wave as Stella and Flack left.

Danny looked at his watch, 5:30, ‘Ok sweetie, do you want to home?’ Lindsay giggled.

Danny picked up his bag and walked out of the office as Lindsay began to make the familiar sound of ‘pat-a-cake’!

*Chap30*- Thoughts of a Messer

After feeding Lindsay, Danny was now placing Lindsay in her cot.

‘We’ve got a big day tomorrow baby, ok?’ Danny said as he stroked his daughter’s face.

‘Tah tah’ Danny looked around and picked up Lindsay’s teddy which Louie and Lucy had given her when she was born.

‘Good night sweetie and remember that we are going to visit mommy tomorrow ok?’

Lindsay yawned and closed her eyes as Danny backed out of the room after turning on the mobile above the cot.

Danny walked down the hall, grabbed a beer from the fridge and sat on the sofa ready to watch the game. As the minutes went past Danny’s concentration strayed from the game to the photo that had been placed on the cupboard to the side. It was a photo of himself and Montana at her childhood home in the snow. He loved that photo. It had been his second visit to Montana after the trial. Over the last year he had stared at the photo many times, it reminded him of the good times they had shared.

He had looked so young in the photo then even though it had only been taken a few years back. The truth was that loosing his wife and gaining his daughter in such a short period of time he had been forced to grow up. He laughed at the idea of a grown man having to grow up but he knew it was true.

He took off his dog tags and looked at the tag that Lindsay had given him the previous year. His eyes strayed from the tag to her rings which hung adjacent to it and then to his, which was still on his finger. He still needed it.

He wasn’t sure if he was happy about celebrating Lindsay’s birthday. He wanted to, he really did but the thought of his late wife always hung over him. He still had trouble dealing with married women victims but Mac had helped him though it. Mac was the only one who Danny had confided in properly in the past year- he was the only one who understood.

As he put his dog tags back around his neck he stood up and headed for his room. There was no point in dwelling on the past, he thought about his Montana each day and just because it was a year on why should he feel worst.

He climbed into bed and dreamed about the next days event’s after muttering, ‘Good night Montan…’

ooooh this should be interesting. I also find the different slang terms interesting...I think of a cot as something quite different from a crib for example.

He was walking down the road with Lindsay and they were munching on the hotdogs they had bought.

‘Come on Cowboy,’ Lindsay said as she took another bite of her hotdog, ‘there is no way Mac will let you get away with that.’

Danny laughed, ‘Yeah I thought it was a little far fetched,’ Danny replied pulling Lindsay closer to him.

Lindsay snuggled into his warmth as the entered central park, ‘What time is your shift?’

‘Erm four bu…’ Danny was interrupted by a scream close by. Danny and Lindsay stopped and looked around to see two men pointing guns at each other. A young woman close by them had seen the guns and had begun to scream.

‘SHUT IT BITCH,’ one of the men shouted. The woman was beginning to panic and her legs gave way as she tried to sit down.

Before Danny new what was happening Lindsay had left his side and was sprinting over to the woman, ‘HEY YOU, STOP,’ the same man shouted towards her.

‘MONTANA STOP,’ Danny called but Lindsay had already taken out her badge.

Simultaneously Lindsay shouted, ‘NYP…’ as the sound of two shouts rang in Danny’s ears.

‘LINDSAY!’ Danny shouted as he sat up drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. Danny groaned in anger as he collapsed back into bed, ‘Not another one!’ He said to himself as he rolled over, got out of bed and headed to the bathroom.

He washed his face and then lent on the sink as he looked in the mirror. He had had many nightmares about Lindsay after her death but he hadn’t had one in months. He groaned once more. He dried his face and then walked in the direction of Lindsay’s room.

As he poked his head inside he saw her standing up holding onto the banner as she tried to speak to her teddy. Danny opened the door fully and Lindsay turned to face him, ‘Daa da,’ Lindsay said.

‘Good morning sweetie?’ Danny said as walked across the room, ‘Happy Birthday.’

‘Updon,’ Lindsay said raising her arms.

Danny laughed and picked up his daughter, ‘but you don’t care about that do you sweetie, I bet you just want cheerios,’

Lindsay giggled, ‘Toes!’ She said as she clapped her hands together.

‘Ok sweetie, let’s get you changed first.’

Ten minutes later Danny was drinking coffee as Lindsay sat in her high chair eating her cheerios. She could just about use a spoon now but she couldn’t get enough on her spoon resulting in her soon using her hands.

As Danny stood watching, the doorbell rang. He kissed Lindsay and walked out of the kitchen to open the door. He was greeted by his parents and Lucy all carrying gifts and decorations.

‘Hey guys,’ Danny said as his family walked in, ‘I’m glad you could come early to help me get ready.’

‘It’s ok son,’ Terry said as he hugged his son, ‘Where’s our angel?’

Danny laughed, ‘She’s in the kitchen,’ As they walked in Lindsay giggled and dropped her spoon.

‘Naaana!’ Angie stepped forward towards her granddaughter and reached for a wipe to clean her up.

‘Luce,’ Danny said, ‘do you know when Louie will be here?’

‘Erm maybe in half an hour or so, he’s just gone to get Linds’ present from the office! I’ve married an idiot,’ She laughed, ‘I mean why did he take it there in the first place!’

Danny laughed, ‘I’m sure he blamed it on his damn coma,’ they both laughed as she nodded, ‘Ma is it ok if I take Linds and get her ready we are gonna head over to the grave before every one arrives.’

Angie smiled as she passed over Lindsay, ‘Come on sweetie.’

As they reached her room he changed her and then found her teddy, ‘there you go sweetie all ready to go.’

‘Maama,’ Lindsay said as Danny lifted her up.

‘That’s right sweetie,’ he loved it how even though Lindsay wasn’t there she understood who they went to visit at the graveyard. She was so smart for a one year old and Danny knew she was going to very successful as she grew up.
