Carmine-What is Cessau?

Men forget that they have unearned privilege in society. It's strange because there was a whole thing on LJ earlier where this guy arranged something at a Sci-Fi event where women were issued with badges based on their willingness to allow men to ask them if they could fondle their breasts. I shit you not - can you honestly think of a worse way of objectifying women? :scream:

Oh, ugh. That sounds like just the sort of thing sci-fi dorks who've never been laid would do. They're not all like that by any means, but ones like those do exist.

It led to some interesting links about male privilege in which a guy had the balls to post about rape. He noted that a man's interest is often in discussing it with regards to protecting his own ass, rather than challenging his peers on their behaviour or protecting women. He also made another interesting statement about how the term 'she was raped' should be banned. Not because of the perpetual victim reasoning, but because it puts the victim on the bottom rung looking up and having to prove their case. Again, it removes responsibility from the rapist.

It's interesting how language can be used that way--subtle differences can mean so much.

I guess. But if no-one ever challenges this behaviour, men get to continue to wallow in their privilege...

True, but I think as men, they're probably not thinking that way. I thought Carmine was pretty savvy and shrewd when telling the younger girl to watch out for the older guy, that he was a scumbag.

Dr. Drew and Striker gave a lot of dumb advice...they told the one guy who, erm, finished up prematurely to ditch his girlfriend of seven years. WTF? Some of their advice was just bad. Some of it was decent, but I felt some of it was off.

Before I go to bed, I'll sum up:

There wasn't really a lot new, at least I didn't think. They asked Carmine about CSI: NY--"great to have a steady job," Gary Sinise--"great guy," acting--"don't do it unless you have to," and the band--"got together, recorded the album, been in the works for a year." The quote stuff is paraphrasing, but those were the basic ideas.

The advice stuff was basically people calling in for pretty detailed, graphic sex advice. Carmine seemed to do better with the dating advice than the sex advice, and was more talkative during those parts, and offered up more advice.

Most of the interesting bits are above--he claims he was dry humping when he was 16  . He said he's shy in public and sometimes crowds overwhelm him. He gave some nice advice to a young guy having trouble talking to girls, saying to just go out there and talk to them and just keep at it. And like I said above, he said he's single and wants to settle down but can't meet anyone serious in L.A.

They only played one Ceesau track--"Wrote the Longest Word."

It was fun--the whole thing must have ran an hour and a half (once you took out the commercials), so that's a lot of airtime. Hopefully it's good exposure for Carmine and the band--I thought he did well!

You know, I've been a member of the geek squad for years - I love me some good Sci-Fi, which TV is sorely lacking these days. I don't think I've ever come across guys like this before. I was just appalled.

Quite. People often don't think about the words they use and how it can mean something else entirely. Especially in type.

His advice to that girl was spot on. I'm glad that he put in there because I think that needed to be said with a modicum of seriousness that the hosts lacked.

I think the hosts were shooting for entertaining more than they were for giving decent advice. I get that there needs to be a balance in these kinds of shows for them to work, but some of the stuff they said was just stupid. As corny as some of the shows are over here, I've never heard really bad advice dispensed like that. Questionable maybe, but never outright dumb.

From the sound of it, it seems like the whole show's staged.

Top41, you should totally ask Fay what she and I, uhm, discussed after hearing about Carmine appearing on this Loveline thing.

I'm gonna be honest, I think this is staged. It just seems so false and for the humour...

Heh heh. I'm intrigued. And nosey. :p

what makes you two think that its staged? there is nothing staged or rehearsed about loveline. of course, the callers get screened, but everything is on a whim. its live radio, not a taped reality show.

what did everyone think of the song they played?

I gave my reason already. A lot of the stuff just seems to be said for the response rather than the giving of advice, and they always have the right wisecrack for the occasion. So totally inorganic. Just because a show is 'live' doesn't mean it can't be loosely scripted.

As to the song - Wrote The Longest Word - I adore it. One of my favourites on the EP.

They could always have callers standing by or something, after saying what their question was going to be to someone on the phone beforehand, so they'd have a vague idea of what to say--I'm just guessing, of course, I haven't got a clue. The only time I ever saw Loveline was back when it was on MTV and NSYNC was on there. I was way too young to be watching that. The only question I remember involved a guy calling in about one of his (part of the male anatomy that holds gametes) being the size of an apple or something. :wtf:

Anyway, as for what me and Kimmy were talking about--we really wanted one of the guys from the show to prank call just to wind Carmine up. :p I really wanted it to be Gary so he could say, uh, a slang term for the part of the male anatomy that holds gametes, the one that starts with a 'b'.

I kind of wish I'd listened to the program, but then again, I'm kind of glad I didn't. :p

I think that live radio is terrifying, so well done to Carmine for keeping his cool and giving some good advice (or so I've read, as I didn't actually listen myself). :) Yeah, the callers will have already stated what their question is when they are screened so it's possible that the presenters have a slight 'heads-up' before it's asked live on air. But at the end of the day, a live show is still live and anything can happen.

I like 'Wrote the Longest Word' too, from reading back through some of the older posts, I think that song might be a bit of a fan favourite. :)

I'm thinking that like most radio shows, the calls are vetted quite heavily. They probably get thousands of calls each night and answer less than fifteen of them. It wouldn't be hard to think up responses when you are likely going to get a caller who will cover every eventuality.

Size of an apple? Ouch!

B*lls or B*llocks? :p Though either would have been funny. And I'd have laughed my ass off if one of the guys had done that...

I'm glad I heard Carmine just talking about stuff, but honestly, I wouldn't tune in if he did it again in the future. The hosts just really annoyed me.

Agreed...and I liked that. It seemed like he took the problems seriously (when they merited it) and actually tried to give helpful advice. Like you said, the hosts just seemed to be trying to be entertaining as opposed to really thoughtful.

My roommate had warned me ahead of time that Loveline would be mostly horny teenagers calling in with wacky sex problems, and she was right.

To be honest, the show sounds ghastly - I presume Carmine only did it to raise the profile of the band. Smartarses making fun of/belittling people's problems is not entertainment IMO.

Anyway, thanks a lot Top to you and origin-nknwn for letting us know what Carmine had to say. Despite the circumstances it sounds as thought he conducted himself with (relative) dignity and he seems a fairly decent sort of bloke really - at least he made an effort to be helpful as opposed to a complete jerk.

Why on earth he hasn't got a girlfriend is completely beyond me - perhaps he should ask AJ where he got his???

Some of the problems were pretty ridiculous and were things if you took five minutes to sit down and think, you'd figure out yourself. I got the impression with a few callers that they were calling in for the kick of it and those people are ripe for the mocking. However when it is obvious by the person's tone that they have a serious concern, and the hosts start taking the piss, then it stops being entertaining. No matter how stupid someone's problem seems, if it worries them then it merits serious dialogue, not comedic point-scoring.

I think the teen aspect was the thing that bothered me about the show. The format is obviously directed at this demographic. UK shows generally tend to attract more mature callers in the 20's to 40's age range. And, from what I heard on this show, British 20-somethings seem more mature than their American counterparts.

It was pretty vile to be honest and as I said previously, I wouldn't tune in again even if Carmine was on there. I just wanted to kick the hosts in the balls by the end of it.

Carmine's advice when he dispensed any was decent and pretty well thought out, even if he did slip into the typical blokey behaviour at times. There were a couple of things he said where I was like "Oh no, you didn't?!" but nothing that was directed at a caller, that I recall anyway. I spent a lot of time cringing at various things, so I might have missed something. But yeah, I thought he carried himself well through this.

Carmine and his woman woes made me quite sad because I really cannot understand why someone as smart and thoughtful as he is cannot find a woman - that stuff is supposed to be a chick magnet, but then I guess it depends what it attracts. Though his comments were directed at LA, which gives me the impression he wants more than the superficiality of Hollywood. Fair play to him.

Not sure if it is a good or a bad thing that I slept in and missed it, sounds like the hosts are .......not sure I can use that word here..mmm...they are jockeys of more than dics.

Definately sounds like it was an interesting listen.
I seriously need to buy the CD i really liked it when i played the tracks but lack of money never helps.

I've listened to the shows like that in the UK... have to say they actually sound a lot more clean than that does. The UK one is wierd because the guy on our local one seems to give pretty good advice and talk to them properly rather than make it for kicks.

The SciFi thing is twisted. You always get some guys like that everywhere unfortunately met one in a club who thought because he was smaller than me i would kiss him... doesn't work that way.

I think if you get a group of guys together in a room like that talking about sex, they're bound to be a little crude or "blokey." It's just a guy thing. Nothing he said came off as jerky or chauvanistic to me, which is a good thing.

I think it's in part the business and the way people get out here--it's easy to find someone to hook up with, but people are so consumed with their jobs and working crazy hours that it really is hard to find the time to really get to know someone and build a relationship. And people are flakey--it's all, "Oh, let's totally get together and do this!" and then there's no follow through. Sometimes it's because people are fake, but a lot of times it's just because they're so damn busy.

Just my two cents about the whole thing, from living and working out here for almost two years now.

Oh I definitely agree. :)

I just loathe to use that phrase which validates male privilege. ;)

I was in the music industry for a bit, before my hearing declined to the point where I couldn't anymore - I did an AD in Sound Engineering and did some intern type work with some studios. It is like that and it is hard to define who is a flake, who's busy and who is just full of shit.

It's easier to look outside of the industry, but if you are working stupid hours, it can be hard to find someone outside who appreciates the job is what it is.
