Singer-songwriter Kenny Rankin dead of lung cancer
    Jun 8, 8:27 PM (ET)
    By JOHN ROGERS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kenny Rankin, a brilliant pop vocalist and highly regarded musician-songwriter whose stylings ranged from jazz to pop to the world music influences he picked up as a child in New York, has died of complications related to lung cancer, his record company announced Monday. He was 69.

Rankin died Sunday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Mack Avenue Records spokesman Don Lucoff said.

The musician, who first gained acclaim as one of the guitarists on Bob Dylan's landmark 1965 album, "Bringing it all Back Home," had been preparing to record an album of new material when he became ill a few weeks ago. Recording sessions scheduled with producer Phil Ramone were canceled as his health began to deteriorate.

Singer Jeff Hanson found dead at 31

Singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson was found dead in his St. Paul, Minnesota apartment Friday, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune has reported.

It was unclear exactly what caused Hanson's death, but he apparently died from a fall or other accident in the apartment, which has concrete floors, his sister Sara Hanson told the paper.

The 31-year-old musician had been climbing a steady rise to fame with the help of the independent record label, Kill Rock Stars, for which Hanson released three albums, including last year's critically acclaimed "Madam Owl."

Hanson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and began playing guitar when he was just 4 years old. He formed his first band at age 13, and was signed to Kill Rock Stars six years ago.

"Jeff Hanson was an amazing artist, a riotously funny person, and a good friend," the label said in a statement posted on their Web site. "Everyone at Kill Rock Stars feels that we were privileged to put out his records. We will miss him tremendously.

In a radio segment about his last album, NPR called his voice, "one of the most incredible and truly unique voices you'll ever hear."

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

    - This guy had such an interesting voice. May he rest in peace.

World’s oldest man dies at 113, official says

TOKYO - Tomoji Tanabe, the world's oldest man, died in his sleep at his home in southern Japan on Friday, a city official said. He was 113.

"He died peacefully. His family members were with him," said Junko Nakao, a city official in Miyakonojo on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Tanabe died of heart failure, she said.

Tanabe, who was born Sept. 18, 1895, had eight children — five sons and three daughters. The former city land surveyor also had 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, according to a statement from the Miyakonojo city. He was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest man when he was 111 years old.

Tanabe lived with his fifth son and daughter-in-law. His favorite meals were fried shrimp and Japanese miso soup with clams, the statement said. Tanabe drank milk every morning and read the newspaper. He also avoided alcohol and did not smoke, the statement said.

John Joseph Houghtaling, 'Magic Fingers' inventor, dies at age 92

MIAMI — The inventor of the "Magic Fingers Vibrating Bed," which brought weary travelers 15 minutes of "tingling relaxation and ease" for a quarter in hotel rooms across America during its heyday as a pop culture icon in the 1960s and '70s, has died. He was 92.

John Joseph Houghtaling died Wednesday at his home in Fort Pierce, Fla., his son Paul Houghtaling said Friday.

Tinkering in the basement of his New Jersey home, Houghtaling invented the "Magic Fingers" machine in 1958.

The device was mounted onto beds, and a quarter bought 15 minutes of "tingling relaxation and ease," according to its label.

"Put in a quarter, turn out the light, Magic Fingers makes ya feel all right," Jimmy Buffett sang in "This Hotel Room."

Kitschy and titillating, Magic Fingers remained a staple of American pop culture even after the device began disappearing from motels. The vibrations triggered a beer explosion in the movie "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," and FBI agents Mulder and Scully relaxed to the pulsations in an episode of "The X Files."
