EarthLink CEO Dead at 49
Jan 3, 10:43 AM (ET)

ATLANTA (AP) - Garry Betty, the president and chief executive of EarthLink Inc. (ELNK), has died from complications of cancer, the Internet service provider said Wednesday. He was 49.

Betty joined EarthLink in 1996 and oversaw the company's growth from a regional ISP with 500,000 subscribers to a national service provider with more than 5 million. He took a medical leave of absence in November. Atlanta-based EarthLink released no other information on his death.

"Garry was instrumental in building EarthLink into the company it is today," company Chairman Robert M. Kavner said in a statement.

EarthLink said Mike Lunsford will remain interim CEO.

Prior to joining EarthLink, Betty served as CEO of Digital Communications Associates Inc. - and was at the time the youngest CEO of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Betty, a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, began his career at IBM Corp., and won the IBM President's Excellence Award in 1982 for his work on the original IBM PC.

RIP President Ford, you're in my prayers.

Bacharach-Dickinson Daughter Dies
Jan 6, 4:16 AM (ET)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Nikki Bacharach, daughter of Burt Bacharach and Angie Dickinson, committed suicide, the songwriter and actress said in a statement Friday.

Nikki Bacharach, 40, suffered from Asperger's Disorder, a form of autism. She killed herself Thursday night at her condo, said Linda Dozoretz, a spokeswoman for the family.

"She quietly and peacefully committed suicide to escape the ravages to her brain brought on by Asperger's," the statement said.

Nikki Bacharach died of suffocation using a plastic bag and helium, said Mike Feiler of the Ventura County coroner's office.

Born prematurely in 1966, Lea Nikki Bacharach studied geology at Cal Lutheran University, but could not pursue a career in the field because of poor eyesight.

"She loved kitties, and earthquakes, glacial calving, meteor showers, science, blue skies and sunsets, and Tahiti," the statement said.

Nikki Bacharach was the only child of Burt Bacharach, 77, and Dickinson, 75, who were married from 1965 to 1981.

It was the second marriage for both Bacharach, the Oscar-winning composer of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," and "What the World Needs Now is Love," and Dickinson, star of the film "Dress to Kill" and the TV show "Police Woman."

Bacharach has three children from other marriages.

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread

I had read this earlier. It's sad. My heart goes out to Burt Bacharach & Angie Dickinson. May Nikki RIP now. Thanks for posting it.

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread

This is very sad, and I know myself how tough it is to have Asperger's syndrome, my heart truly goes out to her, her family, and friends. Since I know I how tough life with Asperger's syndrome can be, I understand her decision, but I don't support it.

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread

That's a very sad thing to hear. :( I also have Asperger's syndrome, and so it kind of hits close to home to hear that someone struggled with it so much. --So tragic.

RIP to Nikki, and my prayers go out to her friends and family. :(

From Yahoo news:

Inventor of instant noodles dies at 96
Sat Jan 6, 6:02 AM ET

TOKYO - Momofuku Ando, the Japanese inventor of instant noodles — a dish that has sustained American college students for decades — has died. He was 96.

Nissin Food Products Co., the company Ando founded, said on its Web site that he died Friday after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Taiwan, Ando founded his company in 1948 from a humble family operation. Faced with food shortages in post-World War II Japan, Ando thought a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses.

In 1958, his "Chicken Ramen" — the first instant noodle — was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company added other products, such as the "Cup Noodle" in 1971.

"The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum" opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan commemorating his inventions.

Ando gave a speech at the company's New Year ceremony and enjoyed Chicken Ramen for lunch with Nissin employees on Thursday before falling ill, Japan's largest daily Yomiuri reported.

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread

RIP Nikki Bacharach. How tragic that she felt such despair and sorrow to end her own life, and how tragic for her loving parents. A parent should never, ever have to bury a child. :( That's the saddest thing in the world. When my beloved dad died, the hardest thing for us to do was to go and tell the sad news to his mother, my grandmother. He was the second son she had to bury, in her lifetime. It was just painfully wrong...

Re: The Rest In Peace & Remembrance Thread
