Re: The Horatio Caine Appreachiation Thread
This intigues me too - DC has similar mannerisms in other roles that he's played. They seem more noticeable in his H role though.
Love the photo, and that is EXACTLY what I need to explain.
You see, Mr C (and Horatio) both have a rather sweet little endotrophic squint. This means he's long sighted and when he looks at people close up his right eye swings right in (as in the photo), and I guess he'll get double vision too with that much deviation. He has to.
To prevent it, and he'll have learnt this little coping strategy early on in his life, he drops his head and looks up at people. When he does that little side tilt which is so endearing that's to bring his left eye into play so he can look at people better. His right eye will probably be quite a bit weaker than his left because he's not using it too much - the brain can't process two images from different angles and so decides which eye is dominant and sticks with that one. This is even affecting the way he stands (that cute hunching effect) which isn't going to do much for his back.
If you watched Dead Woman Walking, in that scene with the camera and the talk about the murderer's eye sight, you'll notice that he brings the camera to his left eye, which for a right hander is quite strange. In Losing Face (episode 1:2) there's a shot that they used in the opening sequence for a couple of seasons where he's holding two wires up. That shows the squint off to good effect. Interestingly I think the directors (or someone) spotted things were obvious and they shoot things differently now. Not much straight on without him doing the head drop.
I can, BTW, tell you all this as I'm one with an exotrophic squint. I spent what must have been years in and out of eye hospitals here in the UK with other kids with similar types of things. Mine is other eye to DC's, and I get double vision when I look up so I have to look you straight in the eye rather than up at you (that caused any number of discussions as to how tall I'd be when I grew up!). If I cock my head its to the opposite side to DC.
Does anyone know if DC wears reading glasses cos if he did that would solve his problem. Kids with his type of squint wore glasses with one eye patched out to try and strenghen the weak eye. My type required operations (Three in all) and patches. They did some sterling 'cosmetic' work on things (me being a girl and all that :lol
, especially the last op about 10 years ago which really straightened things out.
I'd just love to sit and talk squints with DC - you don't see them so much these days as the NHS in the UK gets on to them V fast. I'd be interested to hear how much sight he has in the eye which squints, how his depth vision is affected (I have a hell of a time on stairs) and such.
Anyway, enough of that - as you can see being a first aider at work - they send me the ones with the missing fingers - and with an A level in Biology and an inquisitive mind I tend to look for things like that. I should put up a medical boo boo thread, the sort of obvious slip ups they do sometimes
.
