Sela/Jo Thread #1 "I'm Jo Danville. I didn't do it."

I must be in the minority here....I didn't like her character at all....now I am a few episodes behind (they are on my DVR) so I will need to watch more before I can totally decide.

I can see how someone wouldn't like the character, especially after the first couple of episodes. NY has never been subtle about introducing a new character (MONTANA anyone?) and they did come off as very heavy handed with the "Jo is awesome" stuff. I think what saved the character from being annoying for me was Sela Ward's performances. I just love her as an actress and I think she brings a playfullness and humor to the character that stops Jo from crossing the line to being overbearing IMO.

ETA: I also like that her background is as an experienced FBI agent, too. That explains why she has so much knowledge and skill instead of just being this out of the blue phenom. (Haylen Becall, anyone?)

Jo Danville needs a sister, and that sister should be played by Michelle Forbes.

(I've been re-watching 24 and I forgot that Michelle was in season two. :p Now the only thing that comes to mind is having her play Jo's sister.)

She is great. She was also in Lost and Battlestar Galactica my two fave shows. I hadn't noticed the similarities, you're right, I second the motion for her to be Jo's sister ;).

Here's a TwitPic from Gary:

Aww . . . :adore:

Wow look at Sela! That's the best picture of hers I've seen so far! Isn't she so gorgeous and lovely? I assume that came straight from Gary's camera. I don't think he has time to photoshop it  so for me, Sela is even more beautiful especially on that raw picture! :D

Thanks

SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL
by Sela Ward

I WAS A CHEERLEADER at The University of Alabama in the 1970s and my memories are so rich from this chapter of my life. I can still smell the freshly cut grass of the practice field which we shared with the Million Dollar Band and feel the adrenaline rush that shot through my body as the band played and we practiced the double stunts that we were known for. And with coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at the helm, you felt as if you were participating in something larger than life. Tens of thousands of fans in a sea of red and white would weave their way into the stadium. In those days everyone got dressed up - the guys wore a coat and tie and the gals often wore dresses. Barna football was as serious as religion, and to be a cheerleader, down on the field, smack dab in the middle of it all, was a privilege of the highest order!

Memories of my brief encounters with Coach Bryant always make me smile. I once went to his office to get his permission to arrange a pep rally. When I walked in scared to death, he looked up and said,'Well, if I had known you were coming I would have ordered us up some fried chicken!" He had the appearance of being a gruff old bear, but in reality he was warm, charming, and approachable.

He once said to Debbie Purifoy, one of the other cheerleaders, and me, as we said hello to him before a game and reporters snapped photo-ops of the three of us: "The only reason you all ever come talk to me is to get your picture taken." Nothing could have been further from the truth. We were just too intimidated to walk up and start a conversation!

When I think of the cheerleaders, I am left with two big impressions, the first being Patti Rawlinson. When I first arrived at Bama she was already a cheerleading icon, the epitome of the all-American, apple-pie beauty, and the TV cameras loved her! She was the one I so looked up to as a freshman. And joining the team after I got there were the Troxell twins, Harriet and Beth. They were the first young women I knew to be extremely health- and body-conscious, eating apples for snacks and spending long hours working out in the gym. The results were these very petite, beautifully sculpted athletic wonders - way ahead of their time! Chip Cornelius was my partner and together with Brian Morgan, whose enthusiasm made him the leader of the cheers, there was never a dull moment. Always lots of fun and laughter.

I have to admit that most of my sideline focus was not on the fans in the stands but on #91, defensive tackle Bob Baumhower, my college sweetheart and later a great all-pro player for the Miami Dolphins! It was an enchanted, storybook time. My best friend and sorority sister dated quarterback Richard Todd; the four of us were inseparable for several of our college years. We were often found practicing "the hustle" (the "line dance" of our day) in the living room of the Chi 0mega house or cruising around in Richard's red Cadillac convertible listening to Lou Rawls sing "Groovy People."

I am often asked how a southern gal from Mississippi ended up an actress in Hollywood. The truth is that it is a direct result of having been a cheerleader for Alabama.

Because our games were so often on national television, cheerleaders actually got fan mail, and one letter never left my impressionable young head. A guy wrote, "You are the next Mary Tyler Moore!" I had no idea what that meant-did I project comedy on the field? However, to me, of course, it meant that I could be in movies: the hubris of youth! And so when the cheerleaders were taken to New York City for the National Invitation Basketball Tournament, I was ready. I fell immediately in love with New York and moved there shortly after I left college. Through a series of connect-the-dots I landed a TV commercial and went off into the land of entertainment. But I'll never forget where a lot of it came from: those green football fields all over the South and the grand enthusiastic crowds on magical Saturday afternoons with the Crimson Tide.

Ok, spoilers will go in a spoiler box since the episode hasn't aired everywhere yet, but I'll just say this: Jo is adorable and I love her.

I love that Jo is a slob. She's just so...fun, I love it. She feels like that slightly wacky person you know that just seems a bit out there sometimes, but you love them anyway. And I loved getting to meet Ellie and see Jo with her. I was skeptical about the backstory considering the casting, but ultimately Sydney was a great choice, and she and Sela were great in their scenes.

Jo is so very much a mother, which is nice to see on NY - with everybody single and childless up until very recently, you don't get a real family feeling from any of them. I guess the team is a family of sorts, but...I know what I mean. The casual mentions of the kids and the scenes with Ellie feel so much more natural and authentic than what we've seen with Danny and Lindsay so far, even when they were at home and on vacation at the end of season 6 - that's not meant as a criticism of that storyline, just an observation. Jo is a mother through-and-through, and I love what that dynamic adds to the show.

Jo and Flack are an awesome combination. I love Jo's interaction with Mac too, but she and Flack were fun this week - loved the high five!

...Wow, how many times can one person say 'love' in a post? :p

I agree that Jo is adorable and I love her too.

I lol'd when we saw what a disaster area her office was as well as to Mac's reaction to it. The high five with Flack was awesome. The scenes with Ellie were well done and showed a really great relationship between the two of them. I agree that that real family feeling is something that is seriously lacking with DL and the spawn. I also loved her teasing Mac about working in the burlesque club and his reaction to it. I also love how they've let Sela's 'southernness' be a part of Jo's character.

I feel somewhat like a dork for always gushing over her, but I really can't find any criticisms of the character. Even her vast knowledge can be explained by her being an experienced FBI agent. I just feel they've really hit a homerun with this character and despite loving Stella, I don't miss her at all.

I have liked Jo from the beginning but after tonight's episode I fell in love with her! What a wonderful, fresh, relaxed, down-to-earth character! The interaction with her daughter was perfect, and Sela brings out the best in her cast mates. I am starting to like CSI:NY again!

I agree too :). All her scenes were great. Love that she is so messy  and her relationship with Ellie is so sweet. I really like that she has great scenes with all the cast but I enjoy her the most with Flack and Mac. She really relaxes Mac and her interactions with Flack are just plain fun!! I loved the high five they shared :).

A random comment, but I love Jo's jewelry (especially the key necklace).
