Re: Season 8 *Spoiler Lab* Discussion & Posting - Part 1
I don't tend to post much, but here goes with some rather large speculation. The basis of which is something Destiny hates ( contracts ) but it is potentially key to where this is all going.
As we enter season 8, CSI is very strong and CBS is going to be loath to have the series died. That being said, the principal actors and actresses have been with the series the entire time. It is quite likely that even starting this season with Jorja Fox, we could be seeing the original cast members heading towards the exits.
Now, CBS wants to protect it's top 10 rating show. They know that the loss of a Grissom or a Catherine could be major poison for the show, especially if you have to toss new characters in to start the next season. So my feeling is that season 8 will be where some space is made in the team for new members, allowing them to develop as characters and make any transition work out (fans of ER or Law and Order will understand why this is critical...).
So, my feeling is this: Eckley will be gone this season. Possibly taken out, possibly caught up in scandal, possible moving up to a more politcal position. That would possibly allow Grissom to move up to run the overall lab, technically the position he had in season 1 episode 2, but I digress.
This would have a couple of benefits for the show (and for Billy): First off, the episodes could become less Grissom centric. He could come in and consult on almost any case, and yet not have to lead any case. It could also mean there would be episodes where he wouldn't appear at all, or only in passing. For him as an actor, it would make it easier to do what he did last season, taking a month or so off to do what he enjoys.
For the show, it would open up the position of night supervisor, potentially to Catherine. That in turn would open up a CSI position, maybe for a CSI3 or even a trainee. Sara potentially being out of commission or even off the show for an extended period might do the same. So right away, you are looking at two potential openings.
Also, with Grissom at the top, the staff of other shifts could come into play, which would be another way to put new CSIs into the mix.
That would give the show at least a couple of new openings in the team for this season, and make it easier to transition in the next season.
As a side note, this is also very good for the network, as they would be replacing more expensive long term stars with lower cost performers. Getting the new people signed to three or four year contracts at reasonable prices would help to keep the costs of producing the show in control, which is key in the continued tight market. A transition of staff would also allow the show to have much longer legs, possibly going on well past a 10th season without issue.
So for me, the spoilers are this: Sara is likely (and sadly) either dead, severly injured, or mentally unable to continue in the job and takes significant time off. This would likely be a period that CBS could judge the effects of removing her from the show. Grissom is likely to get promoted up further, and Catherine takes over his current position, freeing up space to add two new characters before the season is half over.
Just my thoughts and speculation. Enjoy
