As part of a year-round strategy of more original programming and fewer repeats, CBS announced today the season premiere dates of THE MENTALIST and UNDERCOVER BOSS. Both programs will bridge the time periods between the fall finales and the spring premieres of SURVIVOR and THE AMAZING RACE.
The seventh and final season of THE MENTALIST will premiere Sunday, Nov. 30 (9:30-10:30 PM, ET/9:00-10:00 PM, PT*), where it will air new episodes for five weeks through December. When THE GOOD WIFE returns on Sunday, Jan. 4 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT), THE MENTALIST will shift to its regular Wednesday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time slot on Jan. 7. The series will conclude with a special two-hour finale on Wednesday, Feb. 18 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT). MADAM SECRETARY will also return Sunday, Jan. 4 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).
The sixth season of UNDERCOVER BOSS will begin with three special Sunday broadcasts, Dec. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), and Dec. 21 and 28 (8:30-9:30 PM, ET/8:00-9:00 PM, PT*). On Jan. 2, it will move to its regular Friday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period.
“One of the goals this season was to keep expanding our lineup of year-round, original programming and have fewer repeat cycles,” said Kelly Kahl, Senior Executive Vice President, CBS Primetime. “We’re fortunate to have two popular, proven ratings winners in THE MENTALIST and UNDERCOVER BOSS to seamlessly join our schedule.”
The ultimate “Survivor” will be revealed during its finale on Wednesday, Dec. 17 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT). The two-hour episode will be followed by the one-hour live reunion show (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT), hosted by Jeff Probst. The season finale of the multiple Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE, hosted by Phil Keoghan, will be broadcast Friday, Dec. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).
The spring cycles of SURVIVOR (30th edition) and THE AMAZING RACE will both premiere on Wednesday, Feb. 25, each with a special 90-minute episode, 8:00-9:30 PM, ET/PT and 9:30-11:00 PM, ET/PT, respectively. THE AMAZING RACE will then move to its regular time period on Friday, Feb. 27 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).

NBC has renewed five dramas for the 2015-16 TV season, including the newly relocated sophomore thriller The Blacklist, the plucky Friday genre series Grimm (currently in Season 4) and the third-year procedural poised to launch 1,000 spinoffs, Chicago Fire.
In fact, ChiFi‘s first offshoot, the sophomore drama Chicago P.D., is among NBC’s other pick-ups, as is schedule stalwart Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which will be entering Season 17.
An NBC rep says no decision has been made yet on the fate of Katherine Heigl’s comeback vehicle, State of Affairs, or fellow freshmen The Mysteries of Laura and Constantine, while on the comedy front Marry Me and About a Boy also remain on the proverbial bubble.
Following new series orders for the 2015-16 season — and cancellations of “Forever,” “Cristela,” “Resurrection” and “The Taste” — ABC has handed over renewals to a slew of returning series.
Most shows on the bubble will be coming back including “Castle” for Season 8, “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” for Season 3, “Marvel’s Agent Carter” for Season 2 and “Nashville” for Season 4. Also returning is “Once Upon A Time” with its fifth season.
Still up in the air is Stana Katic‘s status for the eighth season of “Castle,” which has locked down her male lead Nathan Fillion and will be seeing a shift in showrunner for the new episodes, as David Amann will be stepping away from the show.
Dramas
No surprise here, but Shonda Rhimes trio of hits will be returning, in addition to her new drama “The Catch,” which was officially ordered today and will star “The Killing’s” Mireille Enos.
Rhymes’ renewals include the high-rated “Grey’s Anatomy” — without Patrick Dempsey whose Dr. McDreamy was killed off last month — plus Kerry Washington’s “Scandal” and Viola Davis’ “How To Get Away With Murder,” which unofficially announced its Season 2 renewal during its February finale.
Freshman dramas “American Crime” and “Secrets and Lies” will also be back for new seasons.
The John Ridley series, in which Timothy Hutton and Felicity Huffman starred in Season 1, was not entirely expected to be renewed for Season 2, as critical reception was stellar, but ratings were not. However, the dark, raw drama is expected to be a major player during Emmy season. Ridley has always envisioned “Crime” as an anthology, covering a new case each season.
Though positioned as an event series, Ryan Phillippe’s “Secrets and Lies” was a solid performer for ABC throughout its first run, hitting a season high this past weekend with its Sunday night finale ratings. Juliette Lewis is expected to stick with the second season, as the detective, but Phillippe whose character was cliffhangered dead, took to Twitter after the final episode to tell fans that the next story does not involve him, alluding to the inaugural cast being swapped with a new ensemble, as Season 2 will cover a new crime.
The renewals of “SHIELD” and “Agent Carter” set up a nice continued slate of Marvel properties at ABC, which could see two more projects from the studio, including a “SHIELD” spinoff, in the early stages of development, and a top-secret project with “American Crime’s” Ridley attached.
Comedies
As for comedies, ABC is bringing back freshman hits “Black-ish” and “Fresh Off The Boat,” plus “The Goldbergs,” “The Middle” and — no-brainer — “Modern Family.” Fairy-tale musical “Galavant” was also renewed.
“The Middle’s” Charlie McDermott’s involvement in Season 7 is unknown, as he landed a pilot with CBS, which has yet to be ordered at the network. However, if gets picked up, ABC wants to keep the actor involved with at least guest bits.
Alternative
On the unscripted side, “The Bachelor,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” “Shark Tank” and “Beyond the Tank” were renewed.
“20/20″ will also return to ABC.
Previously cancelled was “Revenge,” which will wrap up its final season this Sunday.
