Paul/Brass: I Got a Coupon #2

Re: Paul/Brass #2

beaujolais doesn't Brass say something to the effect of "You're getting more like Grissom every day" or something like that to Warrick in that scene in 35K OBO?

Since we are going back in to the earlier seasons, I was watching Cool Change tonight and noticed a great line by Brass. It's towards the end of the episode when they are arresting Jerrod Cooper and Cath is surprised to see Jim in charge...

She asks him what he is going there and responds "Guilt therapy." I just love that simple line. Since we have already mentioned before how much his character changed after that, I think that saying that proved it. He became much more humble and protective of the whole team after that (obviously) even though he's not their boss anymore.

Funny you guys should bring up the "beef" between Jim and Doc...I was thinking about that the other day. I recalled the two scenes (HB & LL) in which they got kind of pissy with each other, and then remembered that it can't be all THAT bad becuase Doc was there at the end of WtG...But I often wondered about why they get short with each other too.

About that whole anger management group...sign me up ASAP!

Re: Paul/Brass #2

I find it interesting that both Brass and Sofia have been pissy with the Doc. Wonder if it's a cop thing, or just a clash of personalities?

Can't wait to see new Brass. I have to say, I want to see Method Man again. I don't know why, but he and Paul were just hilarious together.

Re: Paul/Brass #2

I would love to see Method man return too. Those two play off each other very well. I know a lot of people don't like it when he is on the show because it's usually Brass/Nick-centric and their favorite gets pushed in the background for an episode, but whatever. When he is on the show, it makes for a great hour of entertainment.

Brass isn't pissy with Robbins so much as Robbins is pissy to Brass. And if I recall that scene where Sofia was short with Doc it was after she'd spoken to the parents of a young girl who died. Doc had music playing while he was doing the autopsy and she didn't feel he was giving the body the proper respect. I think that was during the season where we were supposed to be seeing how the job was getting to them. That was Sofia's token scene.

This isn't so much someone I'd like to see show up now because it's pretty much moot now but I wish back in S7 we would have gotten a scene between Brass and the woman taken hostage in the hotel room. Nothing big, just a "stopping in to say thanks" scene.

She asks him what he is going there and responds "Guilt therapy." I just love that simple line.
I like that one as well. I also love that it's the start of Brass being in on the action. However, I really hate that they showed "Who Are You" so much later because Brass getting angry at Warrick doesn't fit with the new, changed Brass. From what I understand, that was filmed before "Cool Change" but it aired something like 4th or 5th.

Re: Paul/Brass #2

Hey Paul-fans! Quick off-ropic question, if you guys don't mind! Was Paul an ice or field hockey star in his younger days? I'm guessing ice hockey, huh? And if that was it, they should have made a mention of it during Primium Non Noecre!

Re: Paul/Brass #2

Ice hockey. And up until at least last year, he still played in a hockey league in L.A. as well as several charity games.

Yeah, it would have been nice to get a reference. There's a little scene in "Primium Non Nocere" that I always laugh at. Paul gets on the ice and does this little slide. WP gets on the ice and nearly falls.

However, now that I think about it, he does say something in "Blood Lust". It's in reference to the guys who went after the cabbie. After they say they'd get a ticker tape parade if they were wearing badges, Brass says if they were wearing badges, he's playing left wing in the NHL.

Actually that isn't an off topic question, you can discuss the actor, the character or the actor and the characters he's played. Its not strictly one or the other or limited (okay some limited lol).

Hmmm, that makes me wonder . . . was there ever a series bible for CSI? Or, I wonder if there's some sort of character development working document. Because when I hear stuff like this, I still sometimes worry about what's a throwaway line and what isn't. In this instance, I choose to interpret it as a fully meta-enabled line. :D

There is a "Crime Scene Investigation Companion" that was released a few years back. It covers everything up through season 3. It has detailed character bios, in depth stuff about all of the episodes of the first three seasons. There's also an Ultimate CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. They both are available through Amazon.....

Re: Paul/Brass #2

I think most everything in the first companion book has been forgotten. For starters, it made no mention of Jim being in the Marines and now we know not only was he a Marine, he served in SE Asia (I don't recall if they specifically said Vietnam).

Also, TPTB added a couple of years to his age in WTG. Originally Brass' b-day was 1/2/53, now it's 1/3/51. However, since they also did that to Catherine in "Living Legend", I suspect they did that to all the characters because they didn't anticipate the show going on this long and at some point, Nick really is going to look like he's over 40 (like now).

The Ultimate CSI book is a lot more accurate but I seem to recall it also has a couple of things wrong.

Drakkenfyre, you should check out the interview Paul did in the CSI magazine--if you haven't already. The best parts are posted over on the JB website. Check out the part where Paul says that Brass plays the cello.

To my amazement, there is not eyes-bulging-out smiley. So, in the spirit of my weekend at the local science fiction convention, I will instead deploy the Vulcan:

:vulcan:

Fascinating, but . . .

The cello?!? Cello?!? Yeah, on your suggestion I just read the excerpts . . . fascinating!

I guess all but the most straightforward people are studies in contradiction. However, a TV show, especially a plot-driven one like CSI, only gives us rare glimpses of these other traits.

Well, that's something I'd certainly like to see on the show. I'd like to know what Jimmy-boy does on his downtime. Cello or no cello. Still, that would be fascinating. But I think I'd need some sort of backstory as to why someone who likely came from a working-class background ended up playing the cello. But I am intrigued! :D

Re: Paul/Brass #2

Wow! Can someone please provide the link to the excerpt on the JB page? I mean, I love Brassy and all, but I don't spend a lot of time surfing him on the web, sadly!

Teehee! I'm gonna guess Paul envisions Brass playing cello? I can't though. He seems a little too gruff for such a classical instrument! Maybe the bongo drums? *grin*

Anyway, with all due respect, Nick does not look 40 yet! He looks fab now, even better than he did in S7! But you can't trust my verdict on Nick, I'm partial towards him. *biggrin*

I think that's the point Paul was trying to make though. Brass is a tough guy so the thought of him playing the cello would be such a surprise. However, Brass isn't a cop all the time and it's been shown on many occasions that he has a much softer side. He definitely needs something relaxing to unwind so who knows. I have a cop friend who does needlework. Thank goodness Paul didn't say that because I definitely cannot see Brass cross-stitching or knitting in his downtime.

How about it was something to appease his mother. She didn't like the idea of him playing hockey so as a trade-off, he learned to play the cello. Why the cello? Because it was bigger than he was and the neighbor girl he had a crush on would help him carry it to school.

And really, there's nothing wrong with being over 40. Being over 40 does not make one no longer "fab". Trust me.

Re: Paul/Brass #2

Haha, beaujolais I LOVE your theory for Brass playing the cello. I think that would be great :D

Re: Paul/Brass #2

I don't know. I like the idea of Brass being into that when he was a kid. I'm a bit curious as to how he came to be Brass. the snarky, wisecracking hardass. Honestly, I don't think he started out that way. I'd love to hear more about that transformation.

I really don't see him as being the cello type now, but maybe before. I loved his remarks in "Table Stakes" where he was talking about never having seen the Liberace Museum. That's a bit of an indication that he's not into art and that type of thing.

However, I am curious, what does he do to unwind? Read, watch TV, Movies, what? I know he mentioned in "Early Rollout" about his previous drinking, but he mentioned it in the past tense, like he'd given that up.
