Obstacles

It was late, very late. Yelina knew she shouldn’t be at Horatio’s door at that hour, but she owed him an apology. She had no idea what possessed her to say those things to him. Actually she did, but the truth was a lot more difficult to face. She rang his doorbell. She still had the extra key he had given her, but she felt it wasn’t her place to use it anymore.

After a long wait, she began to wonder if he was home. Yelina rang the doorbell again. The door opened. Horatio looked like he had been woken from his sleep. His hair was tousled and he was clad only in t-shirt and boxers. She immediately felt foolish, perhaps she over-reacted. He wasn’t that affected by what she had said afterall.

“Hey,” Yelina said softly.

“It’s late.” Horatio remarked, his voice sounded deeper than usual. Yelina thought he might turn her away. “Everything ok?”

Always concerned for her, even if she had hurt him. She felt even guiltier.

“Yes. With Ray I mean.”

“You ok?”

Funny, she should have been asking him that.

“I know you must be mad at me… “ Yelina began.

Horatio opened the door wider. “Come on in.”

“I’m sorry I woke you.” Yelina said as she stepped inside.

“It’s ok. I couldn’t sleep anyway.” Horatio sat on the couch, and Yelina sat next to him.

“About what I said just now…” she blurted.

“No worries.” Horatio was quick to reply.

“I hurt you badly. I’m sorry.”

“It did hurt.... alot. But, I don’t want you to worry about it.”

Yelina smiled. “You’re too good for me.”

“I think, it’s the other way round.” He still looked sad.

“It’s just…. Truth is, I want to be with you so much, but we couldn’t. We’d reached a point where I couldn’t stand to be without you.”

“But you pushed me away.” Horatio pointed out.

“It scared me. Even with Ray, it didn’t feel like this, like my whole world would end if I lost you.” Yelina laughed. “Sounds silly? Like some silly romantic movie.”

“It isn’t silly, because I feel the same way about you.” Horatio’s blue eyes seemed to brim with tears. She had that effect on him, she knew.

“I guess maybe Ray Jr was a convenient excuse.” Yelina confessed.

“I spoke to him…”

“I know. I shouldn’t have kept you from him.”

“We’re good now.” Horatio was referring to Ray and himself, but hinting at her and himself.

She slipped a hand slowly into his, unsure if he still wanted her. But she need not have worried. He held on to her hand tightly as if afraid, she’d slip from his grasp again.

“Ray’s ok with this?” He ventured.

“Yes, we talked. He is.”

“I’m glad.” He pulled her to him. She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulders. It felt good, it was something she missed. She felt his arms tighten round her. She felt him kiss the top of her head. She smiled.

“There’s still that department policy.” Yelina reminded him. “You find out who told on us?”

Horatio shook his head. No.

“Department policy wouldn’t apply to co-workers who are married to each other.” Horatio said, hoping she would figure out what he meant.

Yelina lifted her head. There was a look of surprise on her face.

“You’re serious aren’t you?”

“I’m sorry…. I mean…. I don’t have, don’t have, a ring….” He stuttered. "I just thought of it, I'm going to get ah.... get a ring..."

“Yes.” Yelina laughed.

“Yes?” Horatio didn’t expect her to reply so quickly.

Yelina laughed again. “After all the things that had been in our way…. yes..” She kissed him on the lips.

“Yes.” Horatio muttered as he pulled her on top of him and they fell back on the couch.
