Obstacles

^You'll find out why that doesn't work in the following instalment, but good suggestion though

Horatio flipped thought the chanels on the TV. No longer in his work clothes, he was dressed in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. He was sitting on his couch trying to keep his mind off things. He finally settled on the news. But he wasn't really paying attention. Tossing the remote beside him he threw his head back and sighed. It was a difficult decision to make but he had made up his mind. He checked his watch, ten. Yelina should arrive soon.

As if on cue, his front door opened. He had left it unlocked for her. Horatio stood up. Yelina walked in. She was similarly dressed, in a pair of blue jeans but with a tank top which she wore a light jacket over.

Horatio could tell immediately from the expression on her face that she was upset. He had insisted she come over despite her telling him she didn't want to leave Ray Jr alone at home. She was afraid he'd try sneaking out again. Horatio had told her it was important, and she indulged him. Now Horatio wondered if she was angry at him.

She walked towards him. Wordlessly, he took her into his arms. She fell into his embrace, her face burried in the crook of his neck. He held her tightly to him, he could feel the tension off her. He felt her take a breath, then she lifted her head up to look at him. He saw sadness in her hazel eyes. She leaned towards him and their lips met.

They kissed slowly, then more passionately. Horatio thought he felt tears fall from her eyes on to his cheek. He broke their kiss reluctantly. She was crying. It pained him to see her like this. He wiped her tears with his thumb.

"You ok?" He asked the obvious, she wasn't.

She sniffed and sighed. Blinking back tears she nodded.

"You know.... you don't look ok." Horatio began. "Tough time with Ray?"

Yelina bowed her head and nodded.

"You should really let me talk to him."

"You told me you had something important to tell me?" Yelina changed the subject.

Horatio took her hand and led her to the couch. They sat side by side.

"Rick.... found out about us."

He paused, letting the information sink in. When she didn't reply, he continued.

"I was thinking.... the rule is we can't date co-workers. If I'm not your co-worker.... it wouldn't be a problem."

"What are you saying?" Yelina asked, wondering if he was going to quit his job for her.

"I was thinking.... I'll transfer to the graveyard shift. I know you can't cos of Ray, and I wouldn't want you to so.... that leaves me."

Yelina shook her head. " You shouldn't be seperated from your team. They all look up to you."

"It's not a problem, Calleigh can do as good a job as I can - "

"I won't let you do that." Yelina interupted. "This just helps me make up my mind. I was undecided till now."

Horatio saw pain in her eyes. "Horatio, I think we should stop seeing each other."

He didn't see this coming. "You were the one who said we could make this work."

"I know I did, but to be together at the expense of Ray.... I love you both very much.... but I'm his mother. His grades have hit bottom, he never turns up for classes, he's rebellious, he doesn't even talk to me anymore. I.... I can't let him go on like this."

"And you think it's because he doesn't want us to be together, it's his way of getting back at you?"

Yelina nodded.

Horatio sighed. He couldn't argue with her there. He loved his nephew as well.

"I had to choose betwen Ray and you. You know it wasn't an easy choice but I had to make the right one. And you telling me we've been found out... it just helps me decide. I was thinking about it on my way here. This helped me make up my mind."

"Sweetheart," the pain in his heart was unbearable. "I'd do anything for you, I don't mind changing shifts, I'd talk to Ray..."

"Please don't make this any harder for me than it already is."

Horatio bowed his head.

"This is just too hard on Ray. Things are great with us, but you never see how things are at home."

"If only you'd let me."

Yelina turned to look him in the eyes. "I love you, I always will. These couple of months have been the happiest with any man I've ever been with."

"It has been for me too."

"Let's leave it at that." Yelina offered a sad smile. "Believe me Horatio, this is the last thing I wanted, to hurt you."

Horatio shook his head. It hurt but he never once regretted being with her.

"I don't want us to break up either but...." Yelina blinked back the tears again.

Now he understood why she was crying when they kissed, because she knew it would be their last. He sensed her pain. He reached out to touch her, to try rub the pain away from her.

Yelina stood up quickly before they could make physical contact. "Don't. It's already very hard for me, thinking that..... we're no longer together. It's just really hard for me not to be with you."

He understood. He stood as well. "I know. We can't just make the feelings we have for each other go away."

"That's why.... we should try stay away from each other as much as possible. It'll be easier in the long run."

"I don't agree with your decision.... but I'll respect it."

"Thanks. I'd better get going." Yelina fought the tears that she knew would fall once she left his apartment.

"So I'll see you around?"

"Maybe." Yelina replied.

"Take care of yourself." Horatio said sadly.

"You too."

As she left and closed the door after her, Horatio felt as if the world had closed in on him again.

Just a short instalment this time :)

The elevator doors opened and Yelina walked out. She had managed to avoid Horatio for the past week. Fortunately for her, Frank had been assigned to most of the cases Horatio worked on, but today, meeting Horatio had become unavoidable. He was working her homicide.

She saw him in the CSI garage. He walked round the blue Corvette, a flashlight in hand, studying the tires. So handsome while he works. She watched as Horatio stopped, cocked his head then squinted at something on the right front tire. He swabed the tire, looking satisfied as he lifted the swab up to the light. I wish I could tear that labcoat off, along with his other clothing. Images flashed in her mind. His hands on her, his lips kissing her in places he was the only one allowed to see. Get a grip!

She forced the thoughts out of her mind and walked into the garage. Horatio heard the sound of her footsteps. He looked up and smiled.

"Hey," Horatio looked tentative.

"Hey."

"How've you been?"

"You know, same old, same ol'." Yelina replied rather unconvincingly. "You?"

"I uh.... I could be better."

He gave her his "I missed you" look, which she chose to ignore.

"Got something for me?" She gestured to the car.

"Yeah. Found something on the tire, I'll get it to trace."

Yelina nodded.

"I also got blood on the front seat. Driver's side. I sent that to DNA."

"Ok. Call me when you ge the results." Yelina turned to leave determined to make their interaction as short as possible.

"Yelina," he called after her.

She turned and sighed. "Anything else?"

"I was wondering..... how's Ray?" There was nobody else there but them. "I mean he knows we..."

"Yeah, I told him."

"And?" He was hoping there had been some improvement in his nephew's behavior. At least that would have provided some consolation.

"He's... " Yelina didn't really want to tell Horatio that Ray had mostly remained the same. "We're communicating more now. It's getting there." She was referring to her relationship with her son.

"Good to know." Horatio offered another smile. He ached to touch her. "I'd like to maybe meet with him some day, it's been awhile since I saw him."

"Yeah, I'll ask him, maybe you guys can go on one of those fishing trips."

She didn't know if she could handle having Horatio in her house. Too many memories, too painful on the heart. It was easier when she hadn't known what it would be like to be with him. Not when she didn't know what she was missing.

Disappointment. Horatio was hoping she'd ask him over for dinner. Anything to be close to her.

"Ok." He replied.

"I.... have to get back to work."

"I'll call you.... I mean once I get the results."

"Thanks." Yelina left.

He watched her leave. He had missed her so much. He missed her scent, the feeling of her hair in his face, the taste of her lips. Most of all he missed her company, their late night talks, it helped him unwind. If only he could convince her they could figure something out. Respect her decision!

With a sigh Horatio turned his attention back to the car.

-----------------------------------------

The next morning Horatio was on his way to work. The dispatch radio sounded. Officers were having a stand-off with some teenager who was resisting arrest. The address was just round the corner. Horatio turned, perhaps he could help. Besides it was on his route to work.

He pulled up behind the two squad cars, then got out. He saw a familiar scene, police officers with their guns trained on the suspect who was standing at the edge of the bridge. The suspect looked like he was threatening them that he would jump, unless they backed off.

Horatio got out of the Hummer. He approached the police officers. He stopped in his tracks and blinked. Was his eyes deceiving him? He pulled his sunglasses off his face. No mistake. The suspect was his nephew.

I'm guessing the Task Force didn't arrive in time to talk to Ray, otherwise he wouldn't have done anything stupid :p

Thanks for the updates, Hrockz!

Is there any way to get our lovely H to bleed?

And for it not te be a set-up? Stupid writers...

^Yeah I know about that spoiler too.... :scream: But what did you expect? *sighs*

Is there any way to get our lovely H to bleed?

In fanfic land maybe? I'm not sure, depends on how much I get inspired after I watch 'Going Ballistic'

In the meantime back to the current story:

Horatio walked towards Ray Jr who was surrounded by four uniformed officers, their guns trained on him. His steps were quick but not quick enough to alarm the youth.

"Officers, lower your weapons please." Horatio said as he placed himself between Ray and the guns.

The uniformed officers hesitated, and Horatio repeated himself. "Gentlemen, lower your weapons.

Slowly one by one they obeyed. Horatio turned his attention to Ray.

"Ray, why don't you come over here?" He took a slow measured step towards his nephew.

"I can't Uncle Horatio."

The teen looked petrified.

"Yes you can." Horatio offered a hand to his nephew. Once false move and there was a possibility Ray would jump off the bridge into the frigid waters below.

"I didn't mean to do it.... " Ray said, looking at the uniformed officers surrounding him.

"I know you didn't son." Horatio replied, trying to draw his attention away from the other people around them.

"I didn't do it on purpose!"

"Ray... whatever trouble you're in.... I can help you."

Ray hesitated. Horatio had always had a close bond with his nephew. He had wanted to be with Ray more but since he had got togehter with Yelina, she had forbidden him to do so. Now Horatio could only hope that the teen still trusted him.

"Ray you have to trust me. Whatever it is, I can fix it." A very risky promise, but breaking that promise was better than Ray ending up dead.

"You can?" Ray asked, hopeful.

"Remember when you wanted to shoot the man who took your father's life? I'm glad you listened and didn't."

"It's too late now." Ray conceeded.

"It's never too late son." Horatio took a few more slow steps towards his nephew.

"Think about your mother. She'll be really upset is anything happened to you."

"She has you." Ray retorted, anger in his voice.

"Nobody can take your place in her heart Ray. You know that."

Ray turned to look into the water, and for a terrifying moment, Horatio thought the teen might jump. He wanted to lunge forward and grab him but held back, afraid that any sudden movement might worsen the situation.

"Don't do anything you're gonna regret." Horatio persuaded. "Come with me son. I can fix this."

Ray turned to look at his uncle again. Slowly the boy let out of breath.

"Come on." Horatio motioned to Ray.

Ray nodded, then walked slowly towards Horatio. Horatio placed a hand on Ray's shoulder. Relief washed over him. At least the boy was safe now.

"He's riding with me." Horatio instructed the other police officers.

He guided Ray to the Hummer, and they pulled away from the bridge.

They travelled in silence. Horatio knew that whatever Ray had done, they had to talk about it before they reached PD. Before the DA and even his own co-workers got to the teen. He knew he had to get Ray to talk.

He turned off the main highway, taking a detour.

"Where're we going?" Ray asked breaking the silence.

"We're taking the scenic route." Horatio replied.

He continued driving. They couldn't take too long or they'd be missed. He wasn't even sure if Yelina got wind of all this. She would soon.

"Ray...." Horatio began. "Whatever you did, you have to come clean with me... now."

The boy remained silent.

"If you want me to fix things, you have to tell me the truth now." Horatio's tone softened. "What did you do son?"

TBC.....

Ray Jr remained silent. Horatio pulled up to the side of the road. He sighed. He could feel the beginnings of a tension headache creeping up on him. Slipping off his sunglasses he pinched the bridge of his nose with his index finger and thumb. Ray was a tough nut to crack, much like his mother.

"Ray," Horatio began, looking towards his nephew. "Whatever issues you have.... about me being with your mother.... you have to put that aside now. You had police officers holding you at gunpoint, you obviously ran from them.... if you're not going to level with me... I can't help you. The DA isn't going to do you any favours just because of who you are."

"I didn't do it on purpose."

"I believe you buddy, but you're going to have to tell me the whole story."

Ray turned ot his uncle and Horatio saw fear in those eyes.

"It was stupid ok!"

"What was?" Horatio urged him on.

"My friends, they dared me to grab something from the convenience store."

"You mean steal?" Didn't seem that bad, Horatio thought, he was still a minor. Horatio remembered when Ray got in trouble with his friends a couple of Halloweens ago. Hopefully this would turn out in a similar fashion.

"Yeah."

"Then what happened?"

"I went into the store. Some old guy was at the counter. I walked around, looked casual, grabbed a bar of chocolate. I didn't realize he saw me. He tried to grab me but I was too fast. He yelled that he call the cops. I froze. He caught up to me on the road...."

Horatio nodded. "I'm gonna start driving back to PD now. People are going to miss us. But keep talking."

Ray looked outside at the passing traffic. "I pushed him. I didn't know there was a truck coming, honest! The truck must have hit him, cos I heard him yell and there was a loud noise and people screaming to call 911. I didn't dare look back just kept running. Somehow those police cars found me."

Things sounded bad. If the old man Ray was talking about died, Ray could be charged with the very least felony murder. He didn't want to alarm the boy.

"Ray, you listen to me." Horatio's mind was working on overdrive. The press would love to hang his nephew out to dry. "When we get to PD, I'm taking you straight to lockup. Trust me, it's the safest place for you now. Don't talk to anyone, and I mean no one. Not even my CSIs or any of your mother's colleagues ok?"

Horatio wanted to get the facts straight. Wanted to figure out if he could somehow get Ray off the hook.

"You understand me son?" Horatio asked again when the boy remained silent.

"Yeah." Ray replied. "I'm in big trouble aren't I?"

"Let's not jump to conclusions yet ok?"

"Ok. But I know I'm in big trouble with Mom."

"Can't help you there partner." Horatio added. Yelina would be fuming.

They pulled up to PD, and he saw Yelina standing at the steps to the entrance.

"Ray!" Yelina called to her son as he climbed out of the Hummer.

"Mom!" he looked like a scared little boy.

"What did he do now?" Yelina directed her question at Horatio. He could see the anger in her eyes.

"We'll talk later." Horaito replied calmly. "I'm taking him to lock up."

Yelina looked doubtful.

"Meet me out back." Horatio's eyes begged her to trust him.

"Ok."

An hour later Horatio was with Yelina in their old secret spot, the one Eric had discovered. Horatio had to make doubly sure that no one was evesdropping.

"He's in alot of trouble." Horatio began. He related what Ray had told him in the Hummer to her.

When he was done, he knew Yelina too realized the gravity of the situation. She folded her arms across her chest. Horatio wanted to reach out to comfort her.

"What now? We can't work the case."

Horatio nodded. "I'm going to get Calleigh and Mr Wolfe to work the case. But I'll make sure they report everything back to me. See what facts they can gather, then we'll work from there."

"The DA?" Yelina asked.

"Rebecca Nevins." Horatio sighed.

"Not good." Yelina replied. "We had words over a case the last time I worked with her, and she seemed jealous of me."

Horatio was surprised. "I didn't - "

"Of course you didn't. I didn't tell you. I was with Rick at the time, when you were seeing her."

"I'll talk to her. Maybe she'll allow Ray to come home with you tonight."

Yelina nodded. Horatio detected the pain that seemed to be radiating off her. He wanted to take it away.

"Yelina.... it's not your fault. You tried your best with him."

"Apparently is wasn't enough." she replied bitterly.

"He's all grown up now, you can't gurante he'll always make the right decision." Horatio reached out and rubbed her arm, like he always did while they were dating.

She pulled back. She was punishing herself.

"Sweetheart, don't do this." Horatio cocked his head. "You used to tell me that no matter how hard I tried with Ray, it wasn't my fault." He was referring to his brother. "It's the same with you and Ray Jr."

Yelina looked unconvinced.

"I have to go get things going." Horatio hated to leave her like this, but he didn't want to wait too long to get Calleigh and Ryan on the case.

"You can go see him, if you want to."

"I'd like that."

Horatio attempted to pull her to him for a quick hug. She relented his time but he felt her body stiffen like she was just obliging him, and the hug did nothing to comfort her. Her arms reamined down, not hugging him back in return.

"I talk to you again soon." He promised as he slipped on his sunglasses and ducked back intot he building.

Just what I need when I got the flu and have to do my yearwork :p

( Perfect for some relaxation this fic!)

Sorry for the long wait for this instalment, my mind was too much in shock from 'Going Ballistic' to be in fan fic writing mode.

I stand corrected, H got shot, for real, there was a pool of blood, very easily missed if you don't watch closely, I only saw it the second time I watched the episode. Awesome and it inspired me to think up a future fic, but I'll finish this one first. ;)

By shift’s end, the whole lab had found out that Horatio’s nephew was booked and in lockup. Horatio played it cool but he couldn’t help but wonder how Yelina was holding up. He was immensely worried for her but he knew his priority was trying to get Ray Jr out of the mess he had gotten himself into. The last time he got into trouble with the law, there were other players involved, friends who had been arrested along with him. This time he was all alone. The so-called friends who dared him to steal would not suffice in a court of law.

It was nightfall when armed with sufficient evidence and thought put into the situation that Horatio knew he had to conceded that he wasn’t going to be able to get the boy off the hook this time.

Horatio entered the small holding cell Ray had spent almost the entire day in. He wanted to speak to Ray before, Yelina. He knew he’d probably get into trouble with Yelina for this but he knew she would refuse his help if he went to her first.

Horatio sat down beside the teen. He rested his arms on his legs. Ray looked tired, and still very much the scared little boy.

“It isn’t good is it?” Ray asked in a small voice.

Horatio sighed. “I thought you would have learnt your lesson from a couple of Halloween’s ago.”

Ray lowered his head, ashamed.

“Turns out, the shopkeeper wasn’t hurt. Except for some cuts and bruises. The truck stopped... in time.” Horatio said.

“So he didn’t die?”

Horatio shook his head, no.

“That’s good right?” Ray looked hopeful.

“At least you’re not gonna be charged with murder.”

“But I am gonna get charged with something?” Ray asked.

“You stole Ray. Even if it was a chocolate bar, you stole.” Horatio said slowly. “You’re a young man now and….. it’s time you took responsibility for your actions.”

Ray stood up. ""Yeah so you're gonna send me away to jail so that you and Mom can be together!"

Horatio couldn't believe his ears. "You have no idea how hurt your mother will be if she heard you say this."

Ray turned his head away. Horatio thought he saw tears threaten to fall from his nephew's eyes.

"I know you're still hurting about your Dad, but.. Ray, your mother and I grieved over him as much as you did. And we had each other to go through it. We never betrayed your father. Your mother and I have loved each other for a long time now, I think you know that too."

Ray knew his uncle was right but he refused to admit it.

"Son, you rmother loves you more than anyone else in this world." Horatio stood to face Ray. "Your Mom broke up with me because of you."

Surprise registered on Ray's face. "I thought... I thought Mom just made it up..."

"She didn't."

Horatio waited for the words to sink in. He continued. "But regardless of how you feel about your mother and I, it's not an excuse for what you did."

"So what now?"

Horatio sighed. "The shopkeeper is willing to withdraw his charges, provided we compensate him for his losses.... and it's gonna cost a whole lot more than the cost of a single chocolate bar."

Ray looked up, hopeful.

"I already did that, compensated him." Horatio cocked his head. "But... you still broke the law. Good news is... you don't have to go to juve. The DA agreed not to prosecute, provided you do a month of community services."

"That's it?" Ray asked, relieved.

"That's it from the my point of view, but your mother...."

"I know I screwed up Uncle Horatio. I always said Mom deserved better than she's been through, but I went and did the opposite. I hurt her so much instead."

Horatio laughed softly. "Must be..... the Caine genes. Your father and I.... are both equally guilty of that."

Ray broke in to a slight smile.

"You promise you'll clean up your act from now on."

Ray nodded.

"If you don't, I'm coming after you personally."

"So can I go?" Rayh asked looking around.

"I need to talk to your Mom first. Legally I'm not your guardian, so you can only be released to her care."

"She doesn't know about all this?"

"Not yet. But I'll tell her."

"Good luck." Ray sat back down on the cold, hard bench.

"Thanks, I think I'll need it."

Horatio signalled the uniformed officer outside and the cell door opened. Time to face the music.

Yelina had visited with Ray Jr for awhile that afternoon, before Horatio did. He wasn't the usual defiant self. Instead he reminded her of when he was younger and got frightened during a thunderstorm. They said little to each other, Horatio had warned that the walls had ears. He had rested his head on her shoulder and that was the way they had remained. Yelina found comfort in that, they had fought so much in the past months that even this quiet moment together was refreshing.

That was in the afternoon. When the sky got dark and still no word from Horatio she began to worry. She swallowed her pride and called the DA's office, perhaps she might still be in. Yelina mused that the last time they exchanged words, Rebecca had taunted her that Horatio was hers. Now the tables were turned, Horatio was Yelina's now. Not exactly you broke up with him remember?

The phone rang for a long while before someone answered.

"Miss Nevins?" Yelina asked over the line hoping for answers and soon. "It's Det. Salas. I need to know about my son."

"Horatio didn't tell you?"

Yelina detected contempt and sarcasm from across the line.

Yelina bit down on her lower lip. Don't get angry. "No, he didn't"

A pause, followed by a soft but audible sigh. "Your son will have to serve out a month of community service. Nothing else. The shopkeeper took the compensation we offered. That was your lawyer's idea wasn't it?"

Ray had lawyered up? All this sounded like Horatio's doing.

"Thank you for your time Miss Nevins, I really appreciate it."

The line went dead. No love lost between them. Yelina looked up from her desk. Horatio was walking towards her.

"When were you going to tell me?" The first words out of her mouth as he took the seat opposite her.

"How about now." He wore a look of guilt.

"So Ray's going home tonight?"

"With you? Yes." Horatio nodded.

She didn't understand why she was so irked by the fact that Horatio had gone ahead and took care of everything for her and Ray. She had been so used to being independant. Then they had started seeing each other, and she had relied on him alot. Now that they weren't together anymore, he was still taking care of things for her. And it bothered her that he thought she was unable to stand on her own two feet.

"The shopkeeper - "

"I know." Yelina cut him off. "I called the DA's office."

"Oh...." Horatio knew she was going to be angry but her finding out from someone else, that would no doubt make her angrier.

"Look Horatio, I'll pay you back whatever money you gave the victim."

"I didn't pay him off, if that's what you think. He took the deal we offered."

"By we, you mean the lawyer and you, without consulting me?" Yelina rolled her eyes in irritation. "Was that even legal? Without consulting me?!"

"I did what I thought was best for Ray. He doesn't need to go to juve and get a record."

"And you are what to him? We aren't even seeing each other anymore." The words spilled out of Yelina's mouth faster than she could regret them.

The hurt in Horatio's blue eyes became crystal clear to her.

He stood up. "A simple thank you would have been nice." He whispered.

"Horatio, I - "

He didn't give her the chance to continue, he was gone in a flash.

Yelina, smacked herself on the forehead. Stupid! You're afraid your persistent feelings for him will come tumbling out so you had to hurt him. And after all he has done for you. You can't be together so you had to drive him away in the worst possible fashion?

She had achieved her goal. Horatio would probably be too hurt and scared off to approach her again. They would only be co-workers, nothing more. Isn't that what you wanted? No, that's what Ray wanted.

She forced the thoughts out of her mind, sighed and went to get her son.

In the car, Ray was surprised his mother didn't ground him for life and sentecne him to a lifetime of chores. The journey home went on in silence.

Back home in his bedroom, seated side by side on his bed, Ray worked up the courage to ask.

"You ok Mom?"

"Uh-huh," Yelina replied non-commitedly.

"Aren't you gonna like punish me?"

"It's time you took responsibility for your own actions." Yelina remembered what Horatio had said to her earlier that day. "I can't always be there to catch you when you fall."

"I know." Ray replied. "Uncle Horatio said the same thing to me."

"He came to see you?"

"Yeah, before he went to see you."

Yelina was surprised Ray didn't sound angry talking about his uncle anymore.

"Mom, I'm... I'm sorry."

"As long as you promise you won't - "

"No, I meant... I've been selfish. You deserve to be happy.... with Uncle Horatio."

A day in lockup seemed to have mellowed her fourteen-year old son.

"And I'll be good from now on, or at the very least, I know I'll try my darnest not to make you angry again."

"Made up your mind huh?" Yelina asked.

"Uncle Horatio and I had a talk."

Yelina should've known. His love and respect for his uncle had never diminished. He had just been the typical angry teen, lashing out at the people he loved after his father died.

"So if you and Uncle Horatio you know, wanna get it on again...." Ray managed a laugh. "Not that you guys needed my permission."

She blinked back tears. She was happy Ray had thought things through even if it took something like this morning to make him do so. But she was upset as well. Did she hurt Horatio so much that the damage was irreparable?

"You ok Mom?" Ray asked again.

Yelina pulled her son to her for a hug. "Time for bed."

"You don't look ok Mom."

"I um...."

Ray seemed to understand. "If you need to be someplace... I promise I'll be asleep. I'm not going anywhere."

She had to learn to trust her son again.

"Thanks buddy."
