The Rest of the Story
Catherine is in her car lost in thought as her fingers travel to her lips. Her mind wanders to him; to his touch, to his long slender fingers tracing her palms, to his breath on her earlobe; and his hand caressing her knee. She realizes she is at the lab as if her car knew how to get there on its own.
The halls are quiet as she makes her way to the locker room to change her clothes.
The silence is almost disturbing. Walking past the Trace Lab, she looks in and notices even Hodges is not there. She almost longs for one of his snarky remarks about now to fill the halls with some sort of noise.
After changing clothes, she puts her purse in her locker and notices something taped to the inside.
She puts her hand to her stomach as a sudden wave of nausea sweeps over her. She resists the urge to vomit and looks what is on the inside of her locker.
LAKESIDE SCHOOL
ENROLLMENT OFFICE
KIRKLAND, WA
1-425-554----
She traces the letters thinking if that is a possibility.
Could she uproot Lindsey and leave her job to follow a man to Seattle? For what? Domestic bliss? Is it worth it? Is it worth it to open her heart and life for a man? Is it worth it to open the part of your life you don’t use everyday for him? A man she can’t stop thinking about; a man who ties her stomach up in knots when she thinks about him. It’s too late now; she has already fallen for him. She already said I LOVE YOU, and you can’t take that back, not like she’d want to. Life has its ups and downs and each new day brings challenges and rewards. Listening to what you really want can bring again bring rewards which sometimes can’t be measured.
He is right, if she didn’t want to be with him, she would have blown him off a long time ago. Funny how falling in love makes you realize these things. And if this isn’t love she is feeling towards him, then what the hell is it??
“Yikes! Talk about a romance novel.” Catherine says out loud.
She looks at her watch. 3:08 it reads. “I’m not that late.” She says to herself again.
Walking down the hall she looses herself in thought again. She thinks about the way he holds himself, the way he puts his hand on his hip, his dark hair and steely blue/grey eyes; and the way he lifts his chin when hearing something he doesn’t agree with.
He might have noticed her first, but being the investigator she is, she noticed him as well.
“Warrick.” She says breathlessly almost bumping into him.
“Hey Cath, how is it going?” He asks. “How are things with you? Is everything alright with you and Lindsey?
I haven’t talked to you since…” his voice trails off noticing Catherine’s very casual attire and lack of make-up.
“I’m…. I’m … I’m good.” She says to Warrick animated.
“And Lindsey, well she’s good, she loves school and I just found out she made the swim team.” “She is no longer friends with that girl Julie; I’d say we are doing great.”
“Does he make you happy?” Warrick asks out of the blue.
Catherine looks back at him for a moment before replying.
“Yes, he does.” She states.
“Then I’m happy for you too.” Warrick says with a smile.
“I just found out I have some great news of my own.” He says leaning in whispering into Catherine’s ear.
“WOW!” “That IS great news Warrick.” She replies back. “You’ll be a great fath—“
Just then her phone rings.
“Catherine, It’s Nick, I’m glad you are there.” Greg and I could sure use an extra pair of hands here.”
“I’ll be right there.” She says into her phone smiling relishing the distraction.
“Catch you later Catherine.” Warrick calls to her as she quickly makes her way back to the locker room.
“I’m really happy for you too.” Catherine calls back to him.
**************
An hour passes before he makes his way back to the hotel.
He’s not really sure if he’s going to miss Las Vegas or not but Tony decides to take a look around possibly for the last time.
He, like Catherine and Grissom and all the rest of the CSI’S and police, see people on the worst days of their lives. He sees them after the murder takes place and when the investigation begins.
Las Vegas is a town where people come to make it big, find their fortune, or wind up homeless or worse when none of that happens.
In a city where 3000 or more people come to live every month; it can also be one of the loneliest places in the world.
After Karen’s death, Tony thought Las Vegas was what he needed. A place that’s full of distraction and there is ‘never a dull moment.’ After hearing what happened to new CSI Greg Sanders, its true; he has seen and heard about more shit in this city than anywhere he has ever been. Somehow that helped him get over loosing Karen and their son. But now, it’s time to move on.
He is back at the hotel.
He sighs grateful that someone has made up the bed. The blue t-shirt of his she wore is folded in the middle of the pillows.
Tony looks at it smiling thinking of him and Catherine together in the bed.
Fatigue is starting to take over as he thinks about them making love in that bed and how nice it would be to lay down and get lost in thoughts of her.
How her hair feels falling on his chest. What her hands feel like on his face. How his heart melts when her blue eyes are fixed on him. How smart and down to earth she really is. How she can manage to have a job she loves and raise a daughter. How she puts the tip of her tongue in the middle of her top lip when she is thinking; or when she opens her mouth slightly and runs her tongue across her top teeth when she is really interested and how she give a sideways glance to the nearest person when she hears something she disagrees with.
*************************
Catherine arrives at the scene. She immediately tucks her hair behind her ears, puts on her CSI cap and heads to where Greg and Nick are standing.
They are standing over a dead body lying face down on the ground.
“Nice of you to join us here Cath, did we interrupt your yoga session?”
Nick smirks at Catherine noticing her clothes.
“Very funny.” She smirks back.
She takes in a deep breath after quickly scanning the scene.
“What do we have here?” Catherine asks looking at Nick, the senior of the two CSI’s.
“Well, we are not sure. The body looks male, late 20’s to early 30’s, white, dark brown to black hair… err... ahh… that’s about all we have so far.” Nick replies flatly. “David should be here shortly.” He adds
“Why, where’s Brass?” Catherine asks. “He’s not on the case, neither is Sofia.” Nick says with a slight grin. .
“We get the new guy.” Greg pipes in pointing to the young detective standing about 20 feet away from Catherine interviewing witnesses.
“So, let me get this straight.” She asks looking in the direction of both Greg and Nick.
“There is a dead guy here, we have no idea what happened or how he got here.”
“What about witnesses?” “Blood spatter, a weapon, ANYTHING?” Catherine asks getting rather annoyed.
“No wonder you called me.” She mutters under her breath.
“Let me go talk to the new detective, I’ll try to figure out what happened.”
She says as she puts down her field kit.
Greg turns to Nick as says as quietly as he can, “I might not have liked him, but I miss Vartann, he knew what he was doing.”
Nick suddenly elbows Greg in the side forcing Greg to let out an “OWWW!” “WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!”
“You know…” says Nick as quietly as he can trying to talk out of the corner of his mouth.
“OOOHHH!” Greg replies back acknowledging why Nick was trying not to say anything.
Catherine overhears the two other CSI’s exchange.
“Whatever you two are trying to be…. Helpful it is not.” She remarks before finding the detective.
She takes in another deep breath and lets it out.
“Thanks guys, I’m fine, really.” She says sincerely. “So, does this new guy have a name?” She asks smiling.
“Detective Roberts, and let me tell you,” Nick states, “he can’t be over 25.”
“Oh, I see, Thanks Nick.” Catherine says as she finally heads over to talk with Detective Roberts.
After prying the information from the detective, Catherine goes back to Nick and Greg.
“Let’s get started guys before it gets dark.” She says putting on her gloves after spying a knife, or the possible murder weapon.
*************
After packing up his belongings, he thinks about trying to convince Catherine to stay with him one more night. He knows that she has her life here in Vegas and he is going to Seattle. But, this is not the way he wants to start out their relationship.
But he can’t do it that easily.
He finds a black jewelry box and puts it on the dresser. He looks at it for a while. He wanted to give it to her when she was with him, but getting caught up in each other was more important. There is so much more he wants to tell her. Like the real reason he and Karen didn’t get married. And what his family is like, and his friends, why people think he’s an ass sometimes.
Looking out the window he notices it’s starting to get dark already. Most of the day is gone. He knows she is working but it will be hard for him not to miss her. Nighttime used to be easy. That’s when he would be working. Helping the other who have lost their way in the city, helping families cope with loosing a loved one, or being there when a dead body is discovered. Daytime is for sleeping to forget all the sorted details that go along with all the rest of it. But now he will spend this night missing Catherine.
He takes the jewelry box and puts it in his pocket, grabs some other things, and heads out for one last errand.
5:30 pm
Although he has never been to her house before, somehow he knew how to get there.
Tony sits in the car and watches the house for a moment or two. He notices a black Cadillac in the two car driveway. Sheer curtains fall from the windows to the living room. They are slightly open as he sees a blonde head walk by the window.
She peeks outside then turns away.
That has to be Lindsey. He thinks.
He knows Catherine is not there but he told her he would drop off something for her at her house. Meeting Lindsey comes with that, he knew it, but he’s not so sure she knew it.
He makes his way to the front door and stands on the landing for a moment or two. He is holding the jewelry box and an envelope large enough to hold his blue t-shirt. He takes in a deep breath, lets it out, then …
“DING DONG” went the doorbell. Within less than a minute it opens.
A teenage version of Catherine is looking right at him.
“Yes.” She questions as he takes in a breath. “Can I help you?” She asks.
“I’m… I’m…Detective… He couldn’t get his name out. He is speechless as he looks at Catherine’s daughter.
“OH MY GOSH”, “I know who you are! Lindsey yells as she practically jumps at him throwing her arms around his middle hugging him.
I’m Lindsey.” She beams at him when she lets go.
“I’m Detective…er… he winces slightly, I mean my name is Tony Vartann”. He tells Lindsey.
“Who is it Lindsey?” A voice calls from inside the house.
“It’s him, it’s him.” She turns and says back inside the house.
“But, mom isn’t home, she’s at work.” Lindsey says turning back towards Tony.
“Grandma is going to take me out to dinner then to buy a new swimsuit. I made the swim team.” Lindsey gushes.
“Who?” “Who is it?” The female voice says getting closer.
Suddenly he is not only looking at Catherine’s daughter, but her mother as well.
She is an older slightly different version of Catherine. They all have the same eyes, he notices, Catherine, her mother; and Lindsey.
“I’m Lily Flynn, I’m Catherine’s mother.” She states.
“My name is Tony Vartann, I’m here…”
“I know who you are, you are the reason Catherine didn’t come home last night.”
She says cutting him off.
“Lindsey”, Lily says turning towards her granddaughter, “Go finish getting ready.”
“But, Grandma, Lindsey whines, I am ready.”
“No granddaughter of mine is going out looking like that.” Lily says to Lindsey somewhat disgusted.
“Okay”, huffs Lindsey, as she stomps up the stairs.
“Catherine’s mother looks Tony up and down. He turns his head slightly from embarrassment.
“Well, Catherine didn’t lie, you certainly are handsome.” She says to the air above him.
Her tone is somewhere between slightly polite and slightly rude.
“I’m sorry if I interrupted something.” He says humbly to her mother.
“I know Catherine is not home, but I told her I would drop some things off for her.”
“Alright, I’ll take them.” Lily says as she studies him.
She puts the items on the table by the door as Lily still stands in the doorway studying him still
Lindsey comes bounding back down the stairs in a new outfit and through the door towards him.
“Do you want to come with us?” She asks cheerfully as she takes him by the arm and leads him towards the driveway.
Tony turns his head towards Lindsey, “I don’t think so.”
He watches Lindsey’s face fall. “Oh, that’s right; you are going back to Seattle.”
She says looking down at the pavement.
“I really wish you would stay.” Lindsey pleads.
“I’ve never seen mom so happy. I guess she has you to thank for that.” Lindsey tells.
“She and I had this
BIG talk awhile ago…. You know…about loosing your power and stuff like that.” “She pretty much moped around here after you left her that phone message.” “I told her to call you because I was sick of watching her mope.” “Talk about loosing your power.” Lindsey says under her breath.
“Since then she and I have been spending more time together; and I like that. But maybe that’s just guilt.” Lindsey smirks.
She even made it to one of my ballet recitals.” She adds.
He stands listening to Catherine’s daughter in the darkness outside of the house.
“She said you can teach me how to cook.” Lindsey breaks in.
“I’d love to.” He tells Lindsey. “When I come back, I’d love to teach you and your mom how to cook and how to fish, I hear you like to go fishing.”
“So, you’re coming back?” Lindsey asks.
“Of course, I’ll just be gone for a while.” “I’ll come back here to visit; then I have to go back. But, I told your mom, it’s only for a year.”
“A year?” Lindsey questions with the tone that only teenage girl’s posses.
“I guess you expect me to say ‘whatever’.” Aren’t you?” She asks looking at him.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect.” He says to Lindsey.
“My mom has been through a lot lately, I mean, you got shot, she was there; all the stuff at work, and now you are leaving.”
“I just didn’t like things the way they were before. She was so uptight. She didn’t like my friend Julie, and we fought all the time. I don’t know, I guess… what I’m trying to say… ummm…”
“Lindsey”, he cuts her off, “it’s okay. I understand what you are saying.”
“For a teenager, you sure are smart.” “It must come from your mom.” He says smiling looking right at Lindsey.
“Yeah, well, she still won’t let me be friends with Julie, but that’s okay. My friend Micayla that used to live by Grandma just moved back here, so that’s cool.”
“And can you tell her that I’m old enough now to go to the Strip by myself…I mean with my friends without an adult?”
Tony laughs a little and says, “I’ll let you and your mom work that one out.”
He leans in to Lindsey’s face. “I have something for you too.” “Will you let your mom know how you like it; then she can tell me, okay?”
Lindsey beams again, “Thanks Mr. Vartann.” she gushes.
Lily comes out of the house and heads towards Lindsey.
She turns to Tony.
“I’m sorry young man, but Lindsey and I have plans. We are going out.”
“I’m leaving as well; It was very nice to meet you Mrs. Flynn”, he says as he extends his hand out to her. This time, she shakes it gently.
“Lindsey, I’m very glad to meet you and Congratulations on making the Swim Team.” He says to Lindsey extending his hand towards Lindsey.
Lindsey instead reaches her arms around him again to hug him.
Knowing that Catherine’s mother is watching; he puts his hands on Lindsey’s shoulders as not to be inappropriate.
“I’m glad I got to meet you too.” Lindsey states happily.
She waves to him as she and Lily get in the black Cadillac.
He watches them drive off.
**********
10:30pm
After returning from the crime scene, Catherine feels something come over her. She gets the ‘mouth watering, stomach churning, hot and cold feeling’ that only comes when you are about to vomit.
She runs to the Ladies Room hoping to make it there before she does it in the hallway.
Luckily she is able to make it at least to the sink in the Ladies Room.
After retching once, she looks up at herself in the mirror, “Oh no!” She says to herself as she vomits again.
After doing it again and then feeling somewhat better, she looks up at herself again in the mirror.
Catherine notices her now bloodshot eyes and pale face. “This isn’t good.” She says to herself again grateful that no one else is there to witness her.
Her hands find their way down to her abdomen where they rest for a minute.
“This isn’t good at all.” She breathes.
Catherine washes her hands, rinses out her mouth and splashes some water on her face.
“I just need to sleep, that’s all, sleep.” She keeps saying to herself.
She makes her way to her office. It’s not really her office yet; but after her promotion it will be. She still shares it with the supervisor from the day shift.
She takes a big drink of water to help her feel better and logs onto the computer.
“Damn it Gil, what the HELL is this about?” Catherine says storming into his office.
“What do you mean?” He asks looking up from his desk lost in pile of file folders.
“DON’T GET THAT WAY WITH ME!!!” “YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS ABOUT!!!”
My promotion to supervisor.” Catherine replies not so loud.
“You are ‘suspending my promotion pending the outcome of the investigation into your previous cases’.” She reads from the printout. She slams down the printout from her computer, after waiting 15 of the longest seconds ever for it to print, on to his desk.
“WHY?” She asks raising her voice again.
“Look,” she sighs, “I really don’t care, at this point, what you and Sara do with your own time.” “It doesn’t even bother me that you two are just about every case together, but DON’T BRING ME INTO THIS!”
“It’s not MY fault Ecklie has the D.A. and the Sheriff on your back.”
“You and Sara brought this on yourself.”
You want to bring the whole lab down with you, is that it?” “You know, I thought I knew you Gil Grissom, but I guess I don’t anymore,” Catherine glares at Grissom.
Catherine plops her self down in the chair across from his desk. Her rage is flaring up in her as she puts her hand over her stomach as more nausea comes.
“Let me see Catherine”, Grissom says in his ‘holier than thou’ attitude he is now known for, his eyes peering over his glasses.
“I seem to have found some cases where you and a certain Detective (his emphasis on the word Detective makes Catherine shudder) were working together.”
“Do you want me to pull those files for you?” The tone he is using is one Catherine hates.
“I’ll be happy to show them to the D.A. and to the Sheriff when they arrive in about an hour.” Grissom says as sarcasm flies at Catherine.
“This isn’t about me.” She snaps.
“And, he is no longer working for the LVPD, in case you forgot, so it doesn’t matter anyway.”
“The D.A. might not see it that way.” Grissom remarks back to Catherine in his typical Grissom tone.
“Again, it’s not my fault you can no longer keep your…..” She stops herself from saying something she’ll regret.
“Catherine,” he states as he barely notices her presence anymore, “I think you should take some time off.” “You have been through a lot lately.”
“Don’t EVEN try to tell me what I need, Gil.” She fires at him.
A minute passes as Catherine feels her rage start to subside. Grissom returns to looking at his pile of case files.
“Look, Gil, I’m sorry.” She quietly says breaking the silence.
“We have been friends for a long time, I just don’t think what you are doing is fair.”
“It’s not fair to me, for one, but also not to everyone else.” “Greg, for example, has worked really hard over the last few years to become a good CSI; it’s not fair to bring him down with you and Sara.” “Don’t you think?”
Just then Sara passes Grissom’s office.
“Is everything alright in here?” Sara asks, “I heard some yelling a few minutes ago, I just thought I’d check it out.”
Sara looks at Catherine. “Are you okay?” Sara asks directly to Catherine. “You’re not …. You know… are you?”
“WHAT?” Asks Catherine annoyed. “What are you talking about?”
“The last time you looked like that,” Grissom butts in, “you were pregnant with Lindsey.” “That could explain this outburst.” Grissom points out.
“And you do have you hand on your stomach.” Sara adds.
“I’m fine.” Catherine snaps at Sara. “And Gil, don’t be ridiculous, I’m not pregnant.” She says somewhat nicer to Grissom.
Sara stands in Grissom’s doorway stunned.
“Oooo-kay then, I’ll be on my way.” Sara remarks as she turns to leave.
“Sara”, Catherine says, “I’m sorry I snapped, yes, I don’t feel well, but, your boyfriend here is suspending my promotion, so I have every reason for ‘this outburst’, okay?”
Catherine says directly at Grissom.
Sara, still in the doorway, states back, “Did you find out why?” Then turns and walks out the door.
As if on cue, Grissom hands Catherine an envelope.
“What’s this?” She asks humbly.
“Just read it.” Grissom says again going back to his stack of case files.

Las Vegas, NV
“You’re… you’re … “she mumbles.
“I’m giving you an ‘out’ Catherine, if you want it.” Grissom responds not looking up at her.
“Or you can stay here, wait it out, and try for the swing shift supervisor again. It’s up to you.”
“And whatever Ecklie or the D.A. brings at me regarding myself and Sara, I’m willing to take full responsibility for.” So, you don’t have to worry about Greg or anyone else at the lab.”
He laughs slightly, “But I might be joining you in Seattle.”
“Thanks Gil.” Catherine ekes out. “How did you know he’s going to Seattle?” Catherine asks.
“Word travels fast around here, remember?” Grissom jokes.
“You really look awful Catherine, are you SURE you’re not …..”
“Really Gil, Please.” She questions as Catherine gets up to leave.
“But, I am going to take you up on your advice and take the rest of the night off.”
“Nick and Greg can finish up the case without me, so I’m going home.”
“Lindsey made the swim team so she and my mother are going out to dinner to celebrate. I told her I’d do something special with her tomorrow.”
“Tell her Congratulations from me. And Catherine… “
“Yeah?”
“I hope you are happy, I really do, whether you are here or in Seattle with him.”
“I mean that.”
“Thanks again Gil, and I am. I really am happy.”
“All I want to do now is go home and sleep.”
Catherine fumbles with her house key as she finally puts it in the lock to open the door.
The house is almost dark except for the light emitting from the TV Lindsey left on.
She is asleep on the couch.
Catherine puts down her briefcase and heads towards her daughter. She runs her hand over Lindsey’s blonde hair as she stirs some.
“Mom?” squeaks Lindsey’s voice? “Yes baby, it’s me, where’s Grandma?”
“Upstairs, I think she is in the other bedroom, she said something about a headache.”
“Mom, he was here… you know… Detective Vartann was here earlier.” Lindsey manages to get out in her sleepy state.
“Is everything okay?” Lindsey asks. “You aren’t usually home this early.”
“Yes, everything is okay, Catherine calmly says to her daughter. “I just don’t feel well, that’s all baby; why don’t you go back to sleep? We can talk later if you want, okay?”
“Okay.” Lindsey says drifting back to sleep on the couch as Catherine pulls a blanket over her and turns off the TV.
Catherine feels her stomach lurch again.
She heads up the stairs to find her mother who was where Lindsey said she was, in the extra room.
“Mom,” Catherine whispers to her mother. “Are you okay?”
Lily stirs and rolls over to face Catherine. “Oh, is that you Catherine?” “What are you doing home?” Lily asks.
“I don’t feel good. Grissom sent me home.” Catherine replies.
Lily sits up and turns on the bedside light to look at Catherine.
“HHHMM.” Lily states. “Just
exactly how long have you been seeing this man?” She asks with a tone of disapproval.
“Why?”
“Have you looked at yourself lately?” “You have
that look and you know what I mean by
that look.”
“MOTHER, PLEASE!” She retorts, “You don’t know what you are talking about,”
As she starts to walk out of the room.
Lily gets out of the bed and follows Catherine into the bathroom.
Catherine frantically searches for the bottle of ‘pink stuff’ she usually keeps in the medicine cabinet.
He mother right behind her.
“It won’t do much good.” Lily pipes in. “You’ll need more than that.” She points out as she watches Catherine take a swig.
Catherine walks forcefully to her bedroom to and changes into her nightgown;
Lily right beside her.
“Thanks mom, you can go home now.” Catherine sighs at her mother.
“Catherine”, her mother starts, “Are you sure about this? You know, having a baby at your age. And think about Lindsey, how is this going to affect Lindsey? And me? I’m not getting any younger you know. And what of this man, this Detective fellow you have been seeing. I assume he’s the father.”
“MOTH -ER” Catherine grits through her teeth.
“He was here earlier.” Lily adds. “So I hear.” Catherine butts in. “He left you something. A ring I suppose. A wedding? Really Catherine, do you really want to get married again? I mean, it sounds like you barely know him.” Lily continues, “Then I suppose you will move to Seattle. But; if there is a baby, there will be a wedding. Again Catherine, you really need to consider Lindsey in all of this.”
“PLEASE! MOTHER! STOP!” Catherine strains not to raise her voice.
“First of all”, Catherine finally says after taking a deep breath, “I’m NOT PREGNANT!”
“Could have fooled me.” Lily cuts her off. “How do you know?” She asks.
“Because I checked before I left work! I do work in a lab you know. Are you satisfied now?”
“Second of all, I’m perfectly capable of making my OWN decisions regarding myself, my love life and my daughter.” Her voice is straining.
Catherine sighs again, “Look mom, I’m grateful that you are able to help out with Lindsey. I really am, but when it comes to MY LIFE, I am in charge of that, ME!”
She is cringing now realizing that she has raised her voice and probably woke up Lindsey.
Lily stands facing Catherine a little stunned at the conversation.
“Well, I guess if you don’t need me, then I’ll go home.” Lily sneers.
“Catherine,” She adds after gathering up her things,
“What is it?” Catherine smirks following Lily down the stairs.
“It is Christmas you know, you could pretend like it means something.”
Both Lily and Catherine spot Lindsey sitting up on the couch. Her face is visibly upset.
“Look,” Lily concedes , “why don’t I take Lindsey to my house tonight since she doesn’t have school tomorrow, that way you can figure out what it is you want to do. And get some rest, you look awful.”
I’ll wait in the car.” Lily suggests. “Don’t be too long, I don’t want to be up very much longer.” She remarks walking out the door.
“Thanks mom.” Catherine says under her breath.
“OH Lindsey, I’m sorry did Grandma and I wake you up?” Catherine asks going to comfort her daughter.
“A baby?” Lindsey asks breathlessly. “Mom?” “Seattle?” “Are we moving to Seattle mom?” She asks again searching Catherine’s face for an answer
“Are you really going to have a baby?” Lindsey asks quietly
“No, thankfully, I’m not.” Catherine sighs moving closer to Lindsey.
Catherine strokes Lindsey’s hair as she motions for Lindsey to put her head on Catherine’s shoulder.
“You know, Grandma might not say it in the nicest of ways, but she really does have your best intentions at heart.” Catherine breaks in.
“And yours too.” Lindsey comments.
“I know.” Catherine breathes.
“Did he leave you a ring?” “Are you going to get married?” Lindsey asks moments later.
“No, probably not.” Catherine sighs.
“Do you love him?” Lindsey continues to question her mother.
“What’s with all the questions?”
“I just want to know what’s going on, that’s all.” Lindsey adds.
“Well, I can tell you this, there is no baby, and we are not moving to Seattle, if that is what you were worried about.” Catherine says to her daughter.
“You still didn’t answer my question Mom, do you love him?”
“Yes, I do, why do you keep asking?” Catherine asks with some concern.
“Then why aren’t you two getting married? Isn’t that what grown- ups do when they love each other?” “That and the icky sex part.” Lindsey giggles.
“The icky sex part?” Catherine giggles back.
“You know what grown-ups do when they love and care for each other, icky sex.”
PHEW! I’m glad she thinks sex is icky. Catherine thinks.
“Lindsey,” Catherine starts as she stokes Lindsey’s hair again, “I know you think you are wise beyond your years, and in some ways you are, but sometimes grown-up relationships are not that black and white. There are a lot of ‘grey areas’ in life.” “I wish he would stay here, but that is not how it’s going to be.” She states sadly.
“All of that could change also.” Catherine continues. “That also doesn’t mean that one day we might not get married. Right now, we are staying here and he is going to live in Seattle. But, let me tell you, there will be no baby.” Catherine jokes. “You are my one and only baby. Right baby?” She playfully nudges her daughter.
“I like him mom, I really do.” I even asked him to come to dinner with me and Grandma.” Lindsey says. “But, he didn’t come with us; he just dropped some stuff off for you and left.”
“I’m glad you like him, how was shopping by the way?” Catherine asks.
“I got two new suits and some goggles, and Grandma showed me where she and Sam used to go eat, and…”
“Lindsey,” Catherine says cutting her off, “I’m really glad you and Grandma had a good time, and I’m glad you got to meet Tony, but, I’m still not feeling all that great.
“Grandma is waiting for you in her car, and we don’t want to keep her waiting, we both know how much she hates that.” Catherine smiles at Lindsey somewhat sarcastically knowing that both she and Lindsey know the truth in that statement.
“Hurry and gather up your things and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Catherine whispers to Lindsey as she kisses her on the head. “We’ll do something ‘Christmas-y’ tomorrow, just you and me.”
“Okay.” Lindsey replies happily as she heads upstairs and puts some overnight things in her backpack quickly.
Catherine lies on the couch and closes her eyes with a sigh of relief. Relief that she can rest, relief that Lindsey likes Tony, and most of all, relief that is not pregnant.
“Goodnight mom.” Lindsey calls as she heads out the door.
**********************************************************************
“So it’s true.” His voice says over the phone.
“Yes.” Catherine says weakly. “I’m sick.”
“Where are you?”
“My plans have changed some; my flight is delayed.”
“Is Lindsey and your mom still there?” He asks.
“No, my mom took Lindsey to her house so I can rest.”
“You never answered me, where are you?” This time her voice is more energized.
“I’m at the lab; I can be there in about 20 minutes.” Tony states.
“What are you doing there?” Catherine asks
“Looking for you…”
“Good, the door is open; I’ll be upstairs in bed.” She cuts him off
“You know you shouldn’t do that; leave your door unlocked...”
“Just get over here.” She cuts him again off as she hangs up the phone.
Catherine closes her eyes and waits for him.
When he gets to the bedroom at the end of the hall, the first thing he notices is the bed, occupied by Catherine, against the wall immediately off the doorway. A nightstand is next to the bed. On it is the phone, a half cup of tea, a half glass of water and a bottle of ‘that pink stuff’ that makes stomach aches go away, and her glasses.
He wipes back a piece of her hair to look at her face after first sliding in next her in the bed.
She feels the stubble that’s growing on his face against the back of her neck as he places a kiss, then another on her bare shoulder.
“You look awful.” Tony smirks at Catherine when she makes a small sound acknowledging him.
She turns her head to face him.
“Yeah, you look really awful.” He says laughing slightly
Her face is now almost the color of her white sheets. Her normally pink lips have barely any color to them.
Her brilliant blue eyes look dull, sunken with dark almost purple half circles under them. Her hair is messed up and matted.
She is curled up under her covers with a white tank-top style nightgown covering most of her body.
He takes a hand to try to smooth out her hair.
“You know, Karen looked that way when she was…”
“Oh God Tony; not you too.” She moans before he could finish his sentence.
“Are you sure you’re not…?” “Because the first time we made love was about three months ago…….. Remember?”......He asks hoping she would …..”after that robbery/homicide at the Venetian.” .....” He says as his eyes wonder off recalling the moments in the shower.
“Yes, I remember.” Catherine gets out.
“I’m just saying; it’s not outside the possibilities.” He whispers to her as he glides a hand across her stomach.
“I’m 43 years-old, I’m too old to have a baby.” She groans.
“So, I’m 39, what’s the point?”
“I think your friend from the diner did something to my food.” Catherine jests. “I saw the way she looked at you.”
“Oh yeah, she thought you were my wife. Detective Daniels set her straight.”
“See, there’s motive.” Catherine jokes some more.
“It could be the marathon sex session we had in the hotel, as I recall, you couldn’t keep your hands off me” “And something about walking funny.” He sarcastically remarks.
“Very funny.” She quips back.”
He feels her shiver and wraps his arms tighter around her.
“Let me ask you this, let’s say that there was a baby, would you stay?” She asks as her voice starts to strain.
Tony replies, “Probably.”
“I’m certainly not going to raise a teenager and a baby by myself.”
“Since there is no baby and I mean NO BABY”…. Her voice trails off… “Will you stay anyway?”
“You mean and I quote ‘choose you over my job?’ end quote.”
“If I asked you to stay… here in Vegas… with me… would you?” Her eyes are now studying his face.
“HA!” he laughs slightly
“Do you think it’s funny?” She moans again.
“You never asked.” He points out.
“Why do we always have these types of conversations in bed?” He teases after a few moments.
“Comfort I guess.” Catherine says rolling now onto her back.
“You are not going to tell me that you decided to stay in Vegas, after I get a job in Seattle, are you?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Did you ever read the story
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry?”* She asks after he rolls on to his back.
“I don’t know. Probably not.” “Sounds like something from High School Literature class, and I really don’t remember High School…” He stops himself before he says some smart-ass comment he is known for.
“I gave it to Lindsey before school started, I wanted to give her a different prospective of love other than the
Disney Fairy Tales she grew up with.”
“It’s about a young woman that cuts off her long hair to buy her husband’s watch back for Christmas, and he in turn sells the watch to buy her combs for her hair as a Christmas present.”
“You see, they sacrificed their own beloved treasures for each other.”
“I think it is one of the best love stories around.” Her voice is very animated despite the way she is feeling.
“I didn’t know you are that deep.” He jokes to her again.
“So, are you telling me you got a job in Seattle while there is a vacant spot… oh…let’s say… in Henderson? Or Pahrump?”
“Grissom gave me a letter.” She states. “It’s actually a recommendation.”
“So, what are you going to do?” He asks
“I don’t know.” Catherine sighs while turning towards him. She puts her hand on his chest.
“He says if I stay, I’ll probably get my promotion, but he did recommend me for a supervisor position if I go to Seattle with you.”
“I wish I could go with you… I really do.” Catherine is wavering on the brink of tears.
“If it were just me, I’d be with you in an instant, you know that right.”
“Oh, SHHH”, he says wiping away a tear.
“More tears.” She jokes in between the teardrops rolling down her cheek.
“It’s just I can’t… Lindsey…and …..”
“I understand.” He quietly says sitting up to meet her.
“I had an opportunity to come to Vegas earlier, and I turned it down.” “I stayed in Tucson.” He tells her stroking her hair.
He watches her as more tears roll down her white face.
“You should get some sleep.” He whispers wiping away the last of her tears.
“Just promise you won’t kick me off the bed, you are a bed hog.” He jokes once more to her.
Catherine smiles at his comment.
They both settle back down in the bed as his arms wrap around her again.
4:30 am
Catherine stirs after falling asleep in his arms. She hears a sound she is not that familiar with, the sound of him snoring. He has rolled over to his other side away from her. His long body is curled up and he is still wearing his clothes. Catherine gets up out of bed, walks over to the side of the bed where he is still snoring, lifts up his feet and pulls the comforter over his body. He doesn’t move.
She gets back in bed and begins to stroke his hair. He still doesn’t move. She leans down to his ear and whispers, “Thank you for staying.” There is no response.
“I love you.” She whispers again in his ear still stroking his hair.
“I love you too.” Quietly comes out his mouth as he begins to snore again.
She looks at him for a while. “You are a gorgeous man.” She breathes.
Catherine studies his profile; his cheeks, his ears, the grey hair starting to show around his temples, and his mouth as he breathes.
She leans in and kisses his cheek.
“Thank you again baby.” She breathes again to him then rolls over and goes back to sleep.
Catherine opens her eyes. She looks over at the clock on her nightstand.
7:50 am it reads.
She rolls over towards where she thought he was sleeping. She reaches her arm out hoping he would still be there…. The bed is empty.
Putting on the robe that matches the nightgown Lindsey got her for Christmas last year, feeling much better, Catherine heads downstairs to start the day.
Lindsey is not home, Tony is gone; the house is quiet. This is a good time to really think about the offer Grissom gave her. To stay in Vegas and wait for a promotion or to drop everything she worked for, including her relationship with Lindsey, and move to Seattle to start again with him. She already told Lindsey that they were not going to move, but she also said things could change.
This begins to weigh on her mind as she watches the sun start to break free of the darkness winter brings. Somehow fall turned to winter and winter turned to Christmas. Her mom is right; she does need reminders that Christmas means something.
But, first things first… coffee.
Catherine heads to the kitchen and stops when she hears her stomach growl.
After making the coffee, she goes to the refrigerator to pull out whatever is there.
“Oohh; strawberries, milk, eggs,” She says to herself as she puts them on the counter. “Pancakes, I can make pancakes.” She says again to herself. “Flour, soda, salt, oil, I think that’s all Eddie put in them .” “Sugar, can’t forget sugar.” Catherine laughs realizing that she is not talking to anyone.
“What’s so funny?” His voice asks when Catherine looks up and sees Tony pulling on a polo shirt.
“You’re… you’re.. Here.” She stammers to him.
“Where else would I be?” He asks with a confused look. “I am ‘the boyfriend’.” “Right?” “Aren’t I supposed to take care of you?” He says looking at Catherine.
“I got up before you to make some calls. You were dangerously close to booting me off the bed anyway.” He smiles at her.
I told my new Captain that I had to stay because of a ‘family emergency’.” He tells Catherine. “I guess having a sick girlfriend counts as a family emergency, right?” He jokes. “And something about sacrificing something beloved for each other…” his voice trails off.
“I report January 2nd.” He continues. “I booked a flight leaving New Year’s Day.” “That gives us about 4 days together.”
She stares at him; like he is a figment of her imagination.
“Are… are… you hungry?”
“When I said I only make Macaroni and Cheese, I was wrong; Eddie left his recipe for pancakes.” “I can make pancakes too. They are Lindsey’s favorites.”
“Coffee… want some coffee?” Catherine stutters.
She is looking at him like he is going to disappear.
Without waiting for his reply, she immediately goes and pours two cups of coffee.
She hands him the first cup not looking at it.
“Thanks.” He says as he sits down at a stool next to the counter.
“You look like you feel better.” He says looking at her
“I do, and I’m thankfully not pregnant.” She smiles looking blankly.
“I guess I needed sleep more than I thought.” She mumbles.
“Uhh, Catherine?” He points out, “I think you better take this one.” He says looking at the coffee cup with a superimposed picture of Lindsey on it.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 2003 is printed on the cup.
“Oh, sorry.” “Here.” She hands him another with the CSI logo on it. “I don’t even know how you take your coffee.” She stutters to him.
“Are you okay?” Tony asks. “You are acting really strange.” As he gives her a concerned look.
“I thought you left.” She says after taking a sip.
“I saw the box, the black jewelry box you left with my mother last night.” She starts.
“And?” “Did you like it?” He asks.
“I haven’t opened it.” She says looking away from him.
“Why not?” His voice is getting annoyed. “I thought you would like something like that.” He states.
Catherine’s mind races…….
Is it really a ring? Is it HER ring? The ring he wanted HER to have if THEY got married? Does he really want to get married… to me? What about Lindsey? My mother? Does he really want to get married? Do I?
Before she knew it, he had gone to the living room, picked up the box and brought it back to Catherine.
“Open it.” He states placing it on the counter in front of her.
“Now?” She questions
“Yes, now.” He replies.
Catherine can feel her stomach jump. Her hands tremble as she reaches for it.
She opens the larger paper box with the words CASCADE JEWELERS, SEATTLE WA
Embossed in gold on the top.
Fumbling to open the black, velvet box, she can feel herself get warm…
What would I say? Does he want an answer now? Can I think about it? I told Lindsey we are not getting married.
“Paris,” Catherine blurts out, “I want to go to Paris.” Her eyes search to meet his as her hands are still clutching the velvet box.
“And NOT the hotel, I want to go to Paris… you know… for….the…..I mean…our honeymoon.”
“And Lindsey…” She adds. “She’ll want to come too, if that’s okay.” Words start pouring out of her mouth almost non-stop.
“And… my mother, and the dress… and my job…” Keep coming as her thoughts spill from her brain to her mouth.
“Catherine,” He interrupts as he goes to her standing in the kitchen going on about a wedding.
“Just open it” As he puts his hands over hers to direct her attention back towards it.
He stands back from her and watches as she finally opens the box.
“Oh Tony, It’s beautiful.” She gushes to him.
She picks up a broach. An antique oval broach with a blue crystal in the middle. A gold filigree pattern surrounds the crystal.
“I thought you would like it. It matches your eyes.” He leans into to her.
“I do, I really do.” “It’s beautiful.” She says smiling.
“I’m sorry if you thought it was a ring.” He quietly says stroking her cheek.
“It’s…its okay.” She says back.
“Really?”
“You are better than that.” He says into her ear.
“Better than what?”
“A cop’s wife.”
“What does that mean?” She asks curiously
“Everything you are, everything you have done; doesn’t mean a thing once you become a cop’s wife.” He tells her.
“People won’t look at you as Catherine Willows, CSI, you will be; Vartann’s wife, and that’s all.” “You deserve better.”
“Is that really what you think of marriage?” she asks with more curiosity in her voice.
“When you marry a cop, yeah, yeah I do.”
“I saw it too many times to count how many marriages go wrong; lack of trust, money issues, someone cheats, and eventually someone dies.”
“Why would I put you through that?”
“Because you love me?” She butts in. “Because you want to spend the rest of your life with me?”
“Because I don’t want to loose you that way!” He comments turning away from her putting his hand on his hip.
“Is that why you and Karen didn’t get married?” “You had a son.” She asks cautiously.
“At first, I guess I wanted to protect her from all of that, and I didn’t want to loose her that way either.” He is not looking at Catherine.
“But you said you were going to propose to her, on New Year’s Day.” “What made you change your mind?”
“Our son, I wanted him to have a father; and I didn’t want to loose them at all.” He says turning back towards Catherine.
“Oh, I see.” Her voice is quiet. “What about us?”
“Do you want to get married again?” I didn’t think that is what you wanted, to get married again.” He says looking in her eyes. “What was all that rambling about Paris?”
“I… I don’t know.” Comes out of her mouth.
“Lindsey asked me why if two grown-ups love each other, why they don’t get married, like you and me.”
“What did you tell her?”
“Grown-up relationships are not that black and white. There are grey areas to life.”
Catherine says sadly.
She turns away from him to hide the tears that are falling again. She wipes them away and turns back to him.
“I want this with you.” She starts suddenly changing her facial expression
“I really didn’t know until now how much I want this with you.”
“I don’t care if you have to go to Seattle, as long as you come back to me.”
“It doesn’t bother me, okay, it does a little, that you don’t want to get married, but I want this with you.”
“I want to feel your hand on my knee as I fall asleep in my bed, our bed. I want you to call me a bed hog …. I want you to go fishing with Lindsey and me; I want you to teach her how to cook, and to go to her swim meets and to help her with her homework…” Her voice is full of passion
“OH GOD Catherine, I want this too, more than you know.” He goes to her wiping away even more tears that fall from her eyes. “I told you I’d go to the ends of the earth to be with you, and I would.” “It’s just I’m going to Seattle instead.”
“I want to touch your beautiful red hair; I want to look into your stunning blue eyes. I want to share a bed with you at the end of the day, I want to fight and make up with you like normal couples do; I want to watch Lindsey grow up, have a future with you too……” He says holding her.
“Please just come back to me.” She whispers to his chest.
“Who knows, maybe we will go to Paris, and not the hotel, for our honeymoon.” He says above her.
“Did I tell you how sexy you look in your robe?” Tony asks after a few minutes
“No, not yet.” She smiles at him.
He runs his fingers across her lips. She knows exactly what is on his mind. He has the same look in his eyes he did the night they were in his kitchen… the night he was shot.
Now they are in her kitchen. The relationship has come full circle. All the things that has happened over the past few months, they manage to find each other.
“So, are we going to do this?” She asks implying they are going to make love in the kitchen.
“In my kitchen…. Our kitchen?” she breathes into his ear as he backs her up against the wall next to the cupboards.
“It’s better than the stainless steel evidence table at the lab.” She gasps.
“Or my desk at the cop shop.” He says in between short breaths as his hand slides under her robe.
They stand inches apart, both of their breathing is becoming short and quick.
He begins to gather up her nightgown as his hand slides up her leg.
She traces the LVPD star emblem on the right side of his chest with her right hand as her left slides over his shoulder and pulls him closer to her.
They are still looking at each other very intently.
“So Detective”… she gets out before he cuts her off.
“Do you know how much it turns me on when you say that to me?” He almost pants in her ear pulling the robe off Catherine’s shoulders.
They lean in and begin to kiss.
While they begin to become more intimate, neither one of them hears a key fit into the front door unlocking it.
“MOM?” Lindsey’s voice calls as she closes the door behind her.
She cannot hear Catherine and Tony in the kitchen because
Evanescence’s Call Me When You’re Sober is playing in the earpiece of her iPod.
Catherine wraps her leg around his and pulls him even closer to her as they break away from their kiss.
She now puts a finger through the belt loop of his jeans as his hand makes its way across the bare skin of her stomach.
She takes a breath in as it is now very evident what is going to happen next.
“MOM?!” Lindsey calls again as she takes out an ear piece from her ear.
Catherine puts her hand over his and stops.
“What is it?” he asks breathlessly.
“I thought I heard something” she whispers
They are both silent for a moment.
“It was nothing.” Catherine smiles as she places her hand in between his jeans and his skin.
He leans in to her as a small moan comes out of his mouth.
One of his hands is sliding across her chest making it’s way down towards her breasts
And the other continues to slide up her leg and stops at her thigh
“Oh GOD”… falls out of her mouth….
Once more Lindsey calls…”MOM!?” with some concern. “Are you here?”
Lindsey is now on the hardwood floor that leads into the kitchen.
Catherine suddenly pulls her hand away from him.
“LINDSEY!” She breathes with panic in her voice. “Lindsey is here.” She says as she stands frozen.
They break free from each other but stand face to face frozen at Catherine’s words.
He looks at her like she said foreign words to him.
Lindsey’s foot steps come closer to the kitchen where Catherine and Tony are standing as Lindsey rounds the corner.
Catherine wipes her lips like she is wiping away evidence from the encounter.
She shoots a glance at Tony then immediately to his jeans. She is signaling him to hide ‘his evidence’ from their encounter before Lindsey can spot them.
He steps immediately behind the counter so his back is turned to the kitchen entrance.
Catherine straightens out her robe and begins to regain regular breathing.
Lindsey rounds the corner and spies her mom and Tony standing apart with a very suspicious look Catherine’s face.
“Mom, there you are.” Lindsey sighs.
“Hi Mr. Vartann.” She says to his back.
He puts up his hand but does not turn around, “Hey Lindsey.” He says looking more towards Catherine.
“Hi baby.” Catherine says.
“We….ahh…err…ummm…I was going to make pancakes. Are you hungry?” Catherine stammers to Lindsey cringing some.
Lindsey looks at her mom, at Tony then back to her mother.
Instead of a tirade, hysterics, or even a lecture that Catherine is expecting, Lindsey looks at her mom with a look of almost understanding.
“What?” Lindsey asks as she watches her mom and Tony exchange glances.
“You two love each other, right, care about each other, right?” She asks looking first at her then at him.
They are both silent as they continue to shoot glances at each other.
“It’s a normal, natural thing between two grown-ups.” Lindsey states matter-of-factly.
Lindsey continues to shoot glances between them.
“But PLEASE,” she whines; “just don’t do it in the kitchen anymore, okay? Talk about gross icky sex; I have to eat in here.” She cuts in with a teenage attitude.
“I’m going to my room for a while. And, I’m glad you stayed Detective.” Lindsey says turning to leave.
“I’m only here for a few days.” He tells Lindsey as he slowly turns towards her.
“Cool.” She replies.
“Linds,” Catherine calls to her daughter. “What do you say you and me go Christmas shopping later this afternoon, maybe bake some cookies and stuff like that?”
“Sure mom, I’d love to.” Lindsey says smiling.
“Later.” Lindsey calls to both of them as she heads up the stairs.
Catherine and Tony stand in their same spots. They couldn’t move even if they wanted to due to the shock they are both feeling.
Laughter uncontrollably comes from Catherine. He also starts to laugh after watching Catherine.
“WOW.” She declares. “That is not what I expected.”
“Me neither.” He adds.
She reaches out to him as he comes to her.
“Are you sure you want to leave this?” She asks somewhat sarcastically.
“No, I don’t want to leave you, or Lindsey. Let’s just see where the next few days take us.”
Catherine realizes this isn’t
her worst nightmare; it can be the beginning of a wonderful, normal life.
