Here is the third and hopefully final chapter...
Thanks to a few people who helped me get this up..
Don’t let go of me
“DING” went the bell for the elevator. Catherine’s heart raced some. She stepped off on the 10th floor. 1026 was the number she quickly wrote on her hand when he called.
Walking down the long hallway she tried to think of all the things she would say to him.
Would she get angry or would she break down and tell him how she felt about him?
At that moment all she wanted to do is look in his eyes.
She stood outside the door for a minute or so. She gathered her thoughts and knocked on the door to his hotel room.
“Catherine.” he said as he smiled at her. All the emotions she kept inside of her for the past month and a half came to her as she did in fact look in his eyes. “Hey.” She said quietly as he led her inside of the hotel room. She looked away from him and said. “Wow, this is nice.” “This is not one of Sam’s casinos; I don’t think I’ve ever been here.” She said very quickly. She looked out the window and saw the fountain pool as the water fountains that make the casino famous just began to spray upward. Then a few seconds later the spray fell with a crash that could be heard in the room.
Tony Vartann stepped towards her. She looked at him again as they both resisted the urge to touch each other.
Instead, Catherine walks away from him. “I don’t know if I should yell at you, strike my fists at your or throw you on the bed and make love to you.” She managed to get out before he could say anything. She turned towards him and scanned the room. She noticed two pill bottles on the bedside table. She then noticed what he was wearing; he was dressed more casual than she had ever seen him before in a blue t-shirt and jeans.
“Please, before we get to the third thing you said”, he said with a smile, “I wanted to talk to you. That is why I asked you to come here.” “I wanted to say goodbye.” “WHAT?” She quickly answered back.
“I wanted to see you again before I left Vegas.” He said as he sat down in chair while she sat across from him on the bed. She let out a heavy sigh and put her purse down.
“Why are you leaving?” Catherine asked quietly. “There is nothing keeping me here anymore.” He said looking right at her. There was a silence between them for a few minutes.
Catherine resisted the urge to break down and cry. She remembered the talk she had with Lindsey a few days earlier about ‘loosing your power’. But, when it came to him especially, she did loose it. He said he is leaving, but she wanted to see him again too. She wanted to be with him but was torn by her fear of loosing him and loosing herself. So, in fear of being a hypocrite and totally giving herself to him, she stays on the bed.
“How are you feeling?” She asked again noticing the pill bottles on the table.
“I’m okay, my side hurts every once in a while, but I am okay.”
“What did you do in Seattle?” She asks him still not looking at him.
“I went fishing with my friend Dave.” “We talked about going to Alaska, but we never made it.” “He’s an officer in a precinct in the north part of the city.” “He told me of an opening, the City of Seattle is expanding their homicide units to different parts of the city.”
She turned to look at him. She is still sitting on the bed. He is still in a chair across from her.
“Catherine, he said breaking the silence, “I put in for a transfer.”
“OH, I see.” Catherine said breathlessly. “So,
this is goodbye then.” She said standing up to leave. She could feel the heat in her face as anger and sadness came to her all at once.
“Why is it you men leave when it’s tough; then think it’s so easy to come back?”
Catherine said as she gets up off the bed to walk out the door.
“Wait!” He says as he stands up and reaches for her arm and turns her towards him.
“It doesn’t have to be goodbye, yet.” He says quietly looking into her eyes.
“This happened to me too!” “I was there in the same room as you, I watched you fall to the ground.” “It affected me too you know.” She said with some frustration in her voice.
“I’m sorry Catherine, I had no idea.” “I just got the impression that you didn’t want to see me anymore.” “Like I told you earlier, there is nothing keeping me here.” “I was ready to let go of you and move on.” “I guess you could say I was leaving when it got tough, but I got the idea you didn’t want to see me… until now.” “Why did you come here anyway?” He asks still looking in her eyes.
“I want you too; I told you that on the phone.”
“I guess I panicked a little.” Catherine said still looking back at him.
“I didn’t want to let you go either, but I felt if I didn’t see you, it would somehow be easier… easier to forget you… “
Catherine smiled at that moment. “You know what I just thought about?” She asked him trying to lighten the tension between them. “What?” He replied.
“Remember that case we were on about three years ago?” “We were working a scene in a hotel room similar to this one.”
“I think so.” He says looking very puzzled stepping away from her.
“Why?”
“I remember we were in the bathroom and there was urine all around the toilet.”
“I think I said something like…’why can’t you guys ever hit the bowl?”
“When you came back at me with the ‘Viagra’ comment and hitting the ceiling instead of the floor, well I knew then there was something about you that I didn’t want to loose.”
Something came over him… he walked back over to her and kissed her. She kissed him back. They stood kissing for a few minutes as his hands cupped her face. When they broke apart he whispered in her ear, “Please…don’t leave.” Then she kissed him again as he backed up towards the bed. This time they kissed more passionately as she put her arms around his shoulders and they landed on the bed, his body on top of hers.
This time something else came over him… maybe it was the feeling of her underneath him, her arms around him and her breath getting heavy in his ear….. Or, maybe something else….
“I LOVE YOU.” Came out of his mouth.
Catherine immediately stopped. “What, what did you just say?” She asked almost out of breath. “What did you just say to me?” “I’m sorry, I… I don’t know where that came from.” He said burying his head into her neck as he still lay on top of her.
“Do you even mean it? Or is it a ploy to get me here for one last romp before you go?” She asked with anger in her voice.
“It’s not like that,” he said sitting up off of her.
She can feel her face get hot again as more anger comes to it….
“BRRRRINNNGGGG” cut into the silence between them as she stares at him this time with anger and hurt on her face.
“Damn it Lindsey!” She said through her teeth still visibly upset. He has since gotten off the bed and stops on the other side of the room standing with his hands folded across his chest.
Las Vegas Crime Lab-- G. Grissom
Is on the caller ID on her phone.
“Gil, what is it?” “I’m not supposed to be on again until tomorrow night.” Catherine says into her phone with less anger.
“Catherine, Brass wants me to call you, you should get to PD as soon as you can; Brass thinks they found the guys who shot at you and Tony …oh I mean…Detective Vartann.”
Catherine listens for about a minute more then says…”I’ll be right there.” In a quiet voice.
Those were the same words she said to Tony when he called her an hour or so ago. This time there was less light in her voice but it was the same words.
“This isn’t over.” Catherine said to him as she picked up her purse and headed towards the door.
“So, are you going to come back?” Tony says to Catherine as she stops by the door of the room. “I’m not sure.” She says with her head towards the door. Then she opens it and walks out. “How can you say ‘this isn’t over’ when you don’t know if you are coming back?” He found himself saying to the back of the door.
On the way to PD, Catherine’s mind races as she recalls the whole incident.
How the evening started off… he was cooking for her. How she felt about being alone with him…. exactly what she wanted… how they had the same look in their eyes and how they knew they had not just a physical attraction towards each other but a good working relationship as well.
How she felt when he told her about loosing his girlfriend and son in a car accident… Catherine felt very sad for him. She knew she wanted to get to know him better. She even at some point wanted him to meet Lindsey and eventually her mother Lily.
She also recalls the terror she felt when she watched him fall to the ground. She remembers all the glass on the ground and how she saw him there helpless.
The blood… Catherine remembers all the blood, on her hands, in her hair, on her shirt all coming from him. She remembers crawling on top of him to protect him from more falling glass. Tears suddenly came to Catherine’s eyes as she remembers most of all sitting there with him waiting for the paramedics to come. He had told her to go figure out what happened but she chose to stay by him… holding his hand.
How is she supposed to let him go after what they went through? It could have happened on the job, but it didn’t… it was a more personal setting where her true emotions came out. This is not someone she has ‘casual feeling’ for. The feeling she gets when she thinks about him is for real.
He isn’t Eddie.
After giving her statement to Brass and Sofia, “Good job, Catherine, I know this was hard for you, but we got them now,” “And we did it without Vartann.” Brass said to her while he put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. Sofia whispered to Brass as they were leaving the room, “So, has anyone heard from Vartann?” Brass looks back at Catherine and smiles. Catherine reached into her purse, after she watched Brass and Sofia leave the room, and tried to call the hotel room. There was no answer.
While walking down the hall to leave the building, Catherine literally bumped into Sara.
“Sara.” Catherine said breathlessly.
“I’m here to finish up your case.” “How are you Catherine?” Sara asked with concern.
“I’m okay.” Catherine asked not looking at Sara trying to wipe away tears that had formed in her eyes again.
“You were with him… weren’t you?” Sara asked with her typical inflection.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Catherine said with authority in her voice
“Look, Catherine, we may not see eye to eye on things, but I know you.” “I may not be the best person to give advice on ‘matters of the heart’, but I know you want this with him.”
“It’s not that easy.” Catherine practically whispered.
“Sometimes loving and caring about someone never is, but that is what makes it all worthwhile, don’t you think?”
**********************
Back at the hotel room, Tony walked in circles. Circles around the bed, around the table and chairs and then again around the bed.
“What the HELL am I doing?” He thinks.
“I should just leave right now and no one would get hurt.”
Just then a sharp pain pierces his side then it turns to a dull, throbbing ache. The side where doctors pulled part of a shotgun shell out of him along with his spleen. His hand immediately makes a fist to try as he tries to fight off the pain.
I wonder how many Vicodin I could take to get rid of my heartache as well as the pain in my side. He thinks. His head is throbbing as well as his side.
Memories of her flood in to his mind.
“I LOVE YOU” was the last thing he said to Karen before the car hit her killing both she and their son. It is so vivid to him now. He remembers just what he said because he had only said it once before to her.
He goes into the bathroom, gets a drink of water and sits on the bed. He takes a pill from one of the bottles, swallows it, puts it back on the nightstand then lies down on the bed.
He looks out of the window as the sky is starting to change color. He saw the very top of a spray from a fountain. He watches them for a while as the sky turns more and more blue.
More memories come to him as he closes his eyes……
Tucson, Arizona
New Years Eve 1999
“I can’t believe you have to work tonight.”
“I’m sorry; I wish I didn’t have to.” He says looking into her tired eyes.
“I thought we could drop the baby off at my mom’s house and we could go out just the two of us, like we used to.” Karen says to Tony.
“They need some extra people out tonight; it is New Year’s Eve.”
“But, it sounds like you have something planned with your friends.”
“And I’ll pick you up at your mom’s tomorrow and all three of us will go out of town for the rest of the week.” “How does that sound?” He says while his hand is fumbling in his pocket. Inside the pocket is a ring box.
He grabs it for a minute, looks at her.
Her auburn red hair is piled on top of her head. One or two curls fall down on either side of her face. Her light pale skin is dotted with freckles across her forehead. Her big hazel eyes are less red and puffy than they used to be but there are still dark circles under them from staying awake with their son.
“How I wish he would sleep through the night.” He heard her say.
“I don’t have a problem getting up with him you know.” Tony says back to Karen.
“I know, but somehow it’s just easier if I do it.” She smiled at him.
He loved her smile. He loved the way her light pink cheeks glowed when she smiled.
“I wanted to ask you something.” Tony says to her taking her hand and sitting her down on the couch.
“What is it?” She asks
He holds on to the box and begins to take it out of his pocket.
He looks in her eyes again and touches her face.
“I’ve wanted to do this for along time, but it never seemed like the right time.”
Cries come from the next room…. “I knew his nap wasn’t going to last very long.” She says somewhat upset.
“I’ll get him.” He says to her getting off the couch.
“What were you going to ask me?” She says as she looked at him secretly knowing what he was indeed going to ask her.
“We can talk about it later, okay?” He says heading down the hall to their son’s room.
“You should get ready.” She says, “Now that he is up.”
“I should.”
Later that evening….
“Honey, I can’t talk now.” “I’m on my way to a scene; I can’t believe how busy it is tonight.” He says sitting in an unmarked police car.
“I’m sorry Tony, a change in plans, I’ll meet you at home tomorrow before we go out of town, does that work?”
“Yeah sure.” “I’ll see you then.”
“Karen?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
6:30 am New Years Day
The phone rings at his desk
“Vartann, this is Capt. Kelley, I need you here at this location.”
“Why? I just got back to the station, I’m finishing up paperwork.” “Can’t someone else handle it?”
“NO, this is something YOU need to see…...”
Catherine walks into the hotel room where she was earlier. “Thanks.” She says letting the door close behind her.
She notices him lying on the bed with his eyes closed. One of his hands is behind his head, the other across his chest.
She walks over to the nightstand and picks up a bottle. The room is dark. The only light is coming from the bathroom where he left it on.
“Oh Tony, what did you do to yourself?” She says quietly.
She walks to the window and catches a glimpse of a fountain crashing into the pond.
The sky is almost completely dark as the neon lights that make up the Strip are illuminating the sky.
It’s a different world here. She thought. No wonder so many tourists come to Vegas.
Different than the world I see, but I know why they come. It’s like no where else.
She looks back at him on the bed, walks over to it. Sits gently on the edge, kicks off her shoes and lays next to him. She puts her body up next to his. But it disturbs him enough to wake him up. “MMMMM” he says still half asleep.
He opens his eyes, blinks a few times.
“Catherine?” He says quietly in a sleepy voice.
“How did you get in?”
“This may not be Sam’s hotel, but I can still get into just about any hotel room in Vegas.”
“Plus, the desk manager used to work at the Rampart.” “He let me in.”
“I tried calling earlier, but there was no answer.” “And now I see why.” She says smiling.
He takes his hand from behind his head and puts it around her so she is almost lying on his chest.
“I’m glad you came back.”
“Well, now it’s MY turn to talk and YOU are to listen.”
“Okay, so talk, I’m listening.” He says as they both stare at the ceiling.
Catherine takes a big breath of air in and lets out a bigger sigh.
“Eddie Willows…...”
“What about Eddie?” He asks. “He was the only man I said ‘I LOVE YOU’ to.”
“He said he loved me to and he turned out to be…well…‘not so nice.’” “What do you mean?” He asks again.
“He only did it twice….” Her voice trails off. She didn’t need to explain.
“The first time was shortly after I went back to work after having Lindsey. I was exhausted all the time and Eddie was high all the time. He came home after doing ‘God knows what with God knows who’ and wanted to make love. I was so tired…. Lindsey wasn’t a hard baby, she was pretty good actually, but I had just pulled my first double since going back to work and all I wanted to do was sleep. When I said I didn’t want to, he accused me of sleeping with Grissom! “I can’t believe that he thought Gil and I were sleeping together!” “I told Eddie he was crazy, then… BANG! Across the face. I went flying into the dresser.”
Tony is playing with her hair as tears come to her eyes again.
“I’m so sorry that happened to you.” He whispered to her as they lay looking at each other now. He wipes the tear away as it rolls down her cheek.
“The second time isn’t even worth repeating because it’s just like the first time. Eddie was high and I was exhausted.” She says weakly.
“Tell me about Karen.” She says. “What do you want to know?” He asks back
“How you met…what did she do… how come you never got married… did you love her?”
“I was thinking about her.” He says in a less tired voice. “Really?” Says Catherine. “When you walked in.” “And, for your information, the pill I took was a beta-blocker.”
“Something to stabilize my blood pressure post surgery.” He said looking at her.
“Why do you want to know if I loved her?” He asks still looking at Catherine
“Because you said it to me.” Catherine replied back. “I did want to marry her. I was going to ask her to marry me on New Years Day. “Somehow I think she knew it, but I still was going to ask.”
Another long silence as they both look at the ceiling again.
“You know why I brought up Eddie?”
“Why?” “He wasn’t very nice to me, and …then you said it earlier… and…it brought it all back… and… he died… and” her voice is quivering……
“Because I never loved him as much as I love you.”
“Oh ,Catherine.” He said pulling her closer to him. Their foreheads meet as they once again lay facing each other. “I know that I get the same feeling when I look at you as when I looked at her.”
“Don’t let go of me.” She whispered to him as he put his arms around her.
“I promise; I won’t” “I love you too.” He whispered back.
