HUH, thanks
Ok, as promised here is another chapter
but I't not done yet... there will be more
Seattle isn’t THAT far away
After a quick shower, Catherine has to decide what to wear.
The only choice is the clothes she came to the hotel room in.
She steps out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel and sees Tony sitting in a chair reading the newspaper.
She reaches for her purse and pulls out her glasses.
Things get clearer.
Her mind wanders as she imagines a glimpse into the future about 10-15 years.
His hair will have more grey, his face with a few more creases and his body about the same. She imagines him sitting in a chair then reading the news as she comes to him.
Her hair will also have grey, her face more creases around her eyes, and her body about the same. They will look at each other the same way then as they do now.
That is what she imagines with him.
Tony looks up from reading and sees her standing in a towel.
Her hair is still slightly damp and tucked behind her ears and she is wearing her glasses.
He looks at her for a short time before saying anything.
“What are you looking at?” She says cutting in.
“You, you in glasses.” He replies back.
“You… You look great.” He says before she can say anything back.
“I am older than you and I have 20/15 vision.” “And my eyes are pretty tired right now.” She says referring to her lightly blood-shot eyes with the beginnings of dark circles under them from lack of sleep.
She goes over to wear he is sitting to find her clothes.
She conveniently left them in a pile by the edge of the bed.
She reaches down to grab them as she feels him still looking at her not saying a word.
He suddenly gets up out of the chair and goes to her standing in the towel.
Before he could get close enough to touch her; she says, “No you don’t!” “You promised me breakfast, or lunch, or whatever meal we are going to have.” “I’m starving.”
“Hey, I left you alone in the shower.” He said jokingly back.
It can’t all be about sex. It can’t just be two bodies hidden away from the world. There is something to be said about Grissom and Sara keeping their relationship a secret.
Sometimes it’s easier that way and Catherine knows it. It’s easier to hide away and not open your self up to hurt and heartache, especially to the outside world. It’s easier when it is just sex, no one gets hurt. It’s easier to use your body to get what you want instead of your heart. Every other relationship that she has ever had, including Eddie, was mainly about sex and not about love.
But, this time it’s different. Imagining a future with him that includes Lindsey is a start to opening herself up to this relationship. This time it is love. Or whatever is the ‘knot-in-her-stomach, heart-pounding-in-my-chest-when-I-think-of-you, when-can-I-see-you-again?’ feeling. It hit her hard and it scares her some but… “Caring and loving someone makes it all worthwhile.”
“Catherine, I’ve seen almost every inch of you, you don’t have to hide from me.”
He says to her still standing in the towel holding her clothes.
“I guess you are right.” She says smiling back.
“I promise I’ll be good.” He replies as he walks to the other side of the room.
After she dresses while
she secretly knows that he watched her
They head to the diner.
****************************************************
“Angie.” He says to the ‘20 something’ pretty waitress with dark hair pulled back
“Detective.” The waitress replies back as she shows Catherine and Tony to a booth by the window.
“You must come here often for the waitress to know who you are.” Catherine says looking at him.
“Why is it that cops always know the best places to eat?” Catherine asks not really expecting an answer.
“We all don’t live on doughnuts and coffee you know.” He says sarcastically with a smile.
“Obviously.” Catherine remarks back glancing at him.
Angie comes back and asks looking at Catherine, “So are you a cop too?” “No, I work in the crime lab.” Catherine says to Angie
.
“This is Catherine” He began to say. “OHHHH.” Angie quickly responds with a wink then walks away.
“What was
that all about?” Catherine asks
.
“What?” “What are you talking about?” He asks her as his face turns slightly pink with embarrassment.
“Let’s just say I helped her out.” He says to Catherine.
“What do you mean?” She asks. “It happened about 6 months ago.” He begins.
Flashback: 6 months earlier
“Boy, that was some scene; the CSI’s will have a time with that one. There was a hell of a lot of blood, eh Vartann? Detective Daniels says upon entering the diner.
“Yeah, I guess.” “Who do you think Grissom will get to clean up that mess?”
Tony asks.
“Why, do you think Catherine will be there?” Detective Daniels asks jokingly. “Do you want to go back?” “Is there something we missed” “Maybe you could go back to give her some more information.” Detective Daniels says to Tony very sarcastically giving him a playful tap on the shoulder.
“Hey guys, how’s it going?” Angie asks the detectives.
“Not to bad.” Daniels replies. “Got back from an awful scene, but you wouldn’t be interested in that would you honey?” Daniels smiles at the waitress with a very lofty tone.
“That wasn’t nice.” Tony says to Daniels after the waitress leaves their table.
“Since when do you care?” “You, of all people, I thought would appreciate those kinds of comments.” Daniels states.
“I guess I’m just not in the mood, that’s all.” Tony retorts.
.
“Got Catherine on the brain do you?” Daniels asks inquisitively.
“I know that you have the ‘hots’ for her. It’s pretty obvious.”
“You don’t know what you are talking about.” Tony says back sort- of annoyed.
Angie comes back to the table and asks, “Who is Catherine?” after overhearing the two detectives talking, “your wife?”
“The CSI that Vartann here is ‘hot’ for.” Daniels tells Angie.
“Oh,” she remarks as her face falls.
“So, what can I get for some of Las Vegas’ best cops?” She asks perking up
.
“Coffee; please” Tony says nicely to Angie.
“Coffee and the best cheese omelet around” Detective Daniels says.
“You got it.”
After finishing his coffee and discussing the case more with his fellow detective, Tony gets up to leave.
“Hey Detective” Angie calls to him before he steps out of the diner.
“Got a minute?” She asks hesitantly. “I need to get back to the station before the Captain goes off.” He says studying her face.
“I need your help with something.” She says quietly. “What is it?” He asks with an annoyed voice.
“How can I get my boyfriend to leave me alone?” She asks looking around.
“What do you mean?” Tony asks getting more impatient.
She looks around, looks at the other detective still sitting at the table as she and Tony are standing by the doorway.
“It’s like this”…her voice is beginning to crack.
“He won’t leave me alone, I broke up with him, but he keeps calling my place, he comes over all the time, and he even came by here a few times. The boss says if he comes here again, I loose my job.”
Angie is on the verge of tears.
“I tried talking to him, but he just won’t get it. And the other night he came to my place high and…. Well… let’s say he ‘didn’t take no for an answer’.”
“Did you file a police report?” Tony asks this time less impatient.
“Well… you see… it’s like this...” she continued. “I’m not that innocent either when it comes to drugs.” “But, I swear, I’m clean now!” “I had to clean up to keep my job.” “It’s the only thing I have right now.”
Her voice is shaking.
“OK, ok, I believe you.” Tony says putting his hand on her arm to calm her down.
“So, can you help me?” she asks almost pleading with him.
“Come down to the station, I’ll help you file a Restraining Order.” Do you know what that is?”
“And if what you say is true about him, ‘not taking no for an answer’, then that’s enough we need.
“BUT,” He warns, “You have to follow it to, no calling him, no going to his place, that kind of stuff.” “Do you understand?” He says sternly looking right into her eyes. “This is pretty serious and it’s my ass on the line if you are messing with me.” “Do you understand?” He asks again.
“Yeah, sure, I get it.” Angie says smiling at Tony after searching his face knowing how serious he is.
“Thanks again.” She says as she walks away after giving him another reassuring look.
“Hey Vartann,” Detective Daniels calls to him.
“What was that about?” “Are you going soft on me?” Daniels asks.
“I’ll tell you about it later.” Tony says.
“Right now we should get back, I’m sure CSI has some questions for us regarding the case.” Tony says as they leave the diner.
“So, what happened?” Catherine asks.
“Did you help her get her TRO?” she asks as she begins to eat the meal she forgot ordering.
“Well,” he says, “there is more, and that is where you come in.”
“I do?” Catherine asks.
“I don’t remember this case.” “Did it go to CSI?”
“No.” He says flatly.
“So then what happened?” Catherine asks.
“The next time I was here, she wasn’t.” Tony says to Catherine.
“The other waitress that was here said Angie had taken the day off; that she wasn’t feeling well.” “But, I had a feeling something else was wrong.”
“So, what did you do?” Catherine implores him to finish as she continues to eat.
“I went to her apartment.” Tony says to Catherine in a matter-of-fact tone.
“
WHAT?“ Catherine questions,
"WHY?” “You could have gotten in a huge amount of trouble for that.” “Brass could’ve had your shield for that.” Catherine remarks.
“Aww Hell, she is just a kid.” “I knew something was wrong, so I did something about it.” He says in a loud voice.
“Hey, I do not doubt you that there was something wrong, I’m just curious as to why you would break protocol like that.” Catherine says looking right at him.
“That’s all.” She says going back to her meal.
After a minute or so, Catherine asks again quietly, “So then what did you do?”
“It turns out; the ‘boyfriend’ came to her apartment after he heard about the Restraining Order.”
“I guess he wanted to ‘talk to her about it’, if you know what I mean.” “He beat her up pretty badly. That’s why she didn’t go to work.”
“So, you stepped into it.” Catherine says putting down her fork slightly upset.
“I guess I did.” Tony remarks as he recalls the events.
“I wound up staying with her at her apartment… you know… just to make sure he didn’t come back.” “It turns out he has several priors.”
“So, let me get this straight.” Catherine says with some distain.
“You go to her place to protect her from her loser of a boyfriend?”
“Why would you put yourself on the line like that?” “You could have lost your job, she could have sued you or the department, he could have had a knife or a gun; you could have been hurt or worse.”
Catherine’s voice is full doubt.
“So, how do I come in?” She asks.
“She asked me to stay with her, and not like that. “I couldn’t leave her there with her face and hands all bruised. She had one hell of a black eye. He must have hit her pretty hard. She says she doesn’t remember what happened after he hit her.
I didn’t think I wanted to know what he did to her after she fell on the floor.
So I stayed.”
“I fell asleep on the couch. She woke me up a couple hours later.”
“I guess I said your name in my sleep.”
“That’s what Angie told me anyway.” “She said she heard someone talking so she got up from her room and came out to check up on me.”
“I said your name a couple times before she woke me up.”
“Wow.” Catherine says taken aback.
“I’m flattered, I guess.” She remarks still processing what Tony said to her.
She looks at him for a moment.
“Then what happened?” “I assume her boyfriend has left her alone.” Catherine asks not realizing that she is reaching her fork over to his plate and picks up a piece of fruit from it.
“Actually,” he says watching Catherine reach across the table, “this is the first time I’ve been here since then.”
“That explains her expression when we entered.” She mumbles while chewing.
After realizing that he ‘caught’ her reaching over to his plate, she puts down her fork in embarrassment.
Then something struck her.
“I guess I have to ask this,” Catherine questions as he looks at her.
“You put yourself on the line for a waitress, don’t get me wrong, I think that was a very decent thing you did for her.” But, what happened to us?” “You weren’t willing to stick around and find out what happens with US?” “What about me?”
“You ran.” “Tony, you got shot, they almost got me too.” “I found out from Brass not to long ago the guys who shot you were after the police and CSI’s that were involved with Officer Bell’s shooting.” “It was a payback sort-of thing.”
“You know that too.” She states almost accusingly. “But you still left.”
She is still looking at him, this time with a fierce look.
Catherine sighs heavily. “I guess I thought you were different.”
Tony looks at her then turns away.
He sighs too still not looking at Catherine.
“You know why I did that?” He states quietly.
“I did it for you.” He continues.
“Or did you do it for YOU?” Catherine asks almost demanding.
He turns his head to look at her as her face meets his. Her look is painful. He feels like she shot a bullet at him.
Another pause in the conversation.
“As I remember, you put your life on the line for me.” He says still speaking quietly.
“I can’t ever begin to express…” “STOP!” Catherine says. “Just stop.” She puts her hand up.
“We just spent the last several hours together, getting very intimate with each other, but yet, somehow I feel I don’t know you.”
“That hurts me.” She is saying directly to his face.
She sighs again. “You know earlier, I was imagining a future with you, she laughs slightly, yeah, if you can believe that.” “I was explaining to myself that it all can’t be about sex.” “I’ve fallen for you Detective… hard…. And now I don’t know what to do.” “HA, I even said I LOVE YOU.”
“It doesn’t have to be like that.” He says putting his hand over hers that is now on the table. “You feeling like you don’t know me.”
“So, tell me Detective,
what is it going to be like?” He can hear the hurt in her voice.
The inflection and the hurt in her voice make him hate the way she calls him DETECTIVE.
“Catherine, I think I know why you are upset.” He says to her.
“It has nothing to do with Angie either, am I right?” Tony asks waiting for her response.
After a moment or so, he adds, “I am a police detective; I can figure it out you know.”
He goes to reach for his wallet to pay the bill. Angie comes back to the table and notices the tension between the two of them.
“Don’t bother Detective, it’s on me.” She butts in.
“That’s not necessary.” He says looking in Angie’s direction
“I know its not, but you helped me out, it’s the least I can do, plus, you cops bring a lot of business in here, so… why not?”
“And yes, the boss says its okay.” She adds.
Meanwhile, Catherine is still processing the entire conversation.
She walks outside the diner and waits for him outside on the sidewalk.
She is tired and not looking forward to going to work.
Her mind starts to wander to the previous hours with him in the hotel room.
I never loved him as much as I love you, Echoes in her head.
Unconsciously, she begins to walk down the street thinking she is heading towards her car.
“Thanks Angie.” Tony says to her standing in the doorway.
“You are a decent guy; it’s the least I can do.”
“Thanks.” Tony says sort-of blushing and turning away.
“But, I’m not the one you need to tell that to.” Angie says as she spies Catherine walking away from the diner.
“Go get her detective.” Angie says with another wink as he walks out the door and down the street after Catherine.
“Catherine! Catherine!” He calls after her.
Tony finally catches up to her and grabs her arm to stop her.
She looks at him, then down at her arm with his hand grasping on to it.
“What are you doing?” He asks slightly out of breath.
“No, I’m not pissed about Angie, you are right.” She fires at him.
Her voice is loud as she tries to catch her breath realizing how many blocks she just walked.
“You are right about that.” Catherine adds repeating herself.
He let go of her arm.
She catches her breath and takes in a deep one.
“Once…just for once, I want a man to choose
ME over his job.”
“
Me!”
“Grissom couldn’t do it; Eddie couldn’t do it and now YOU.”
“I thought you were different, but you are just like every other man in my life.
I guess it is all about sex, isn’t it, detective?” Her comments are filled with hurt and anger.
Tony stands next to her listening to Catherine.
He winces after hearing her words.
“Why can’t you choose me instead of your job?” She says looking down at the sidewalk.
“Look….I’m not doing anything YOU, or Grissom or anyone else wouldn’t do.” He fired back at her.
“And I don’t see you packing up your life here in Vegas to come with me.” Flew out of his mouth.
They both look at each other for a few moments.
The mid-afternoon fall sun is making them both squint.
“Wait?” He asks. “Grissom?”
“Yes,” she responds turning away as not to look at his face.
“It was over when I met Eddie.” “Grissom loved his job more than me.”
“I didn’t have to say that I loved him, I knew he didn’t love me the way he loves his job.”
“If that is what you are getting at.” Catherine is still not looking at him.
And, please, I really don’t want to go into it right now.” She pleads with him.
“Catherine, I’m sorry.” He takes her hand and holds it.
He looks at her as the anger he sees in her eyes starts to fade.
He puts his other hand to her face
“We can do this, I know we can.” Tony says to her as he leans into her face tracing the frame of her glasses.
“You know and I know it’s not just about sex.
There is something more between us.
I’ve fallen for you too, I did three years ago.” He smiles at her hoping she will smile back.
“You are the first woman I have felt his way since Karen.” “I had to let her go, but I don’t want to let you go.
I’m sorry that I chose to go to Seattle, but, you said your life is here. And my life will be temporarily in Seattle.”
“And, being the good cop that I am, I know that you want this too, otherwise you would have blown me off along time ago.” She smiles. “I know you Catherine Willows.”
“I think that you do know me.” “I’m not that hard to figure out, am I?” “God, I hope all of that didn’t sound like it came from a romance novel.” Another smile comes to her face.
“I don’t think I’ve shed more tears for a man than I have over you either.” “I thought you should know.” Catherine adds.
“I said that I love you and I mean it.”
“I mean it too.”
“I hope you know what you are getting yourself into.” Catherine smirks.
“It’s not just me, it’s me and Lindsey.”
“You know, people say she is just like me, but I think she is more like you.” “She is very focused and centered and has a very calming presence, like you.”
“You two will have a lot in common. I can’t wait for you to meet her.” “And, by the way, you need to come back and teacher her how to cook, I think the only thing I know how to make is Macaroni and Cheese.”
They both laugh slightly at her comment.
“And, I don’t do laundry either.” Catherine adds smirking again.
“I’m not worried.” He replies back playfully.
“I have something for you but I left it at the hotel. I’m leaving tomorrow, is it okay that I drop it off at your house?”
“Sure.” She says almost breathlessly not realizing that he will meet Lindsey without her.
Catherine looks at her watch. “I have to go.” “Do you want a ride back to the hotel?” She asks quickly
. “No thanks, I’ll walk.”
She takes her hand up to his face and looks into his steely blue/grey eyes. “You should get some more sleep.” She whispers to him. “I’ll be okay, baby.”
They stand in the middle of the sidewalk hugging.
“I can’t believe you are leaving.” She whispers.
“I’ll be back.” He whispers back.
After they break apart, they take each other’s hand.
They look at each other for a while then separate.
She watches him begin to walk away. Sadness comes to her but she smiles knowing that he will be back and he has not left her life forever.
THERE WILL BE MORE...
