Calculation of the first derivative permits absorption attributed to haemoglobin degradation (primarily to bilirubin, but also haemosiderin) to be separated from absorption by haemoglobin.

not exactly what I was looking for. Don't make the answers harder than they really are. ( I do this all of the time) I will give a clue: think of a bruise and the physiological changes that a bruise goes through. I am looking for two words in this answer.
 
Colour and definition of shape (sharply defined bruise would indicate that it occured shortly before death)?
 
crimeshowjunkie, your answer was the closest, The color of the bruise (think of the color changes of a bruise, from a deep purple, or black/blue, to green, to dark yellow and finally a pale yellow. The second method used to age a bruise is histology, which is the tissue and cells.
