CSI Level One
That's because you're viewing it as the brother loving his sister. He didn't. She nailed it when she said he treated her like a possession. He was a pathological bully, and he didn't care for her one little bit. What he cared about was what he saw as another male intruding on his territory. When he saw her torn shirt, he went ballistic over someone not only taking his sister's "honor" but doing so, he assumed, in a manner more befitting his own methods. Ray addressed that with the "humiliation" angle used by Greek warriors. That's what it was all about with this guy; he attacked anyone he saw as weaker than him and humiliated them, because for him, power over others was the only thing that seemed to gratify him. The fact that his sister's boyfriend was a nice, easygoing guy made him that much more of a target for this guy. Some interesting posts and interpretations.
This episode had mixed results from me. I give it a solid A for character lines and especially the Greg scenes, and Doc's clapper; but as some mentioned above, I also felt the story itself was weak. The twist at the end where the stripper did it felt very contrived; I know it was just a re-enactment, but why in the world would someone rush towards a crazed woman with a gun? I would have turned and run fast; but maybe that's just me. And the brother's weird obsession with his sister's virginity? Also difficult to swallow. He was worried about his sister being hurt (because of the torn shirt), and yet he hits her?
I thought it dealt in a sensitive way with male rape. I won't pretend to know anything about it, but the reasoning leading up to it was strange and the rape itself seemed an extreme form of vengence here, especially considering that the boyfriend seemed like a pretty nice guy. Lots of weird reactions by the guest characters in this episode, so I felt kind of a disconnect, since much of it didn't make sense to me.
And yes, is his obsession with his sister was scary. Hmmm . . . wonder how their parents died?
The bully angle is why I completely believed him running at his girlfriend holding the gun. He didn't believe she would actually shoot him. He figured he had her cowed, but of course he figured wrong. I actually sort of cheered for her when she shot him. It didn't work out so well for her in the end, but at least she protected herself. I actually think her self-defense argument might carry some weight in court.
