As if Snooki & Co. haven’t made the words “Jersey shore” disturbing enough, ‘CSI: NY’s Shane Casey is here to take it to the next level.
This Wednesday at 10/9c, the CBS crime drama’s season finale presents the next leg of the sinister serial killer’s twisted “comeback” tour. Why is Casey hell-bent on turning the Messers’ dream vacation getaway into a nightmare? Anna Belknap and Carmine Giovinazzo gave Fancast a glimpse of the thrilling hour to come.
At points this season I’ve had the Danny/Lindsay fans clamoring for more of their favorite couple. It looks like they’re about to get it!
Carmine: They’re going to get it big-time, really big-time. It’s the culmination of everything that’s been going on with Eddie Furlong lingering in the background.
Anna: Fans are going to get a taste of Danny and Lindsay outside of the lab. Danny, Lindsay and Lucy. I for one wanted to see Lucy again!
Did ['CSI: NY' executive producer] Pam Veasey give you a heads-up about what was coming?
Carmine: Pam is pretty good about that. I wanted to know because of the whole idea that my badge went missing [and later resurfaced with the imprisoned Casey's prints on it]. “How do I need to be handling this? What’s going to come of that?” Pam let us know that it was going to lead Lindsay and I in a really great scenario, with us on our own being a family. That then leads into a… situation.
After you saw the script, did you seek out each other and go, “Did you see this?!”
Carmine: Yeah, we did. Anna and I worked around each a lot the last quarter of the season, so when we read that we got to talking about it and figuring it out.
Anna: I was like, ‘Oh my god, what’s going on with this?!” It’s a rough vacation for Danny and Lindsay.
Carmine: We definitely got excited about it.
Anna, did being a mother yourself make the script all the more unnerving?
Anna: Yes, it did. I was practically choked up reading it. It’s a pretty intense storyline, what they go through. You don’t ever want your family brought into your professional life.
‘CSI’ Cliffhanger: A Shooting, A Stabbing and A Serial Killer Showdown
Will we gain any new or specific insight into Shane Casey’s agenda?
Carmine: Without a doubt. He has a great moment where he explains himself – why he feels what he feels and why he’s doing what he’s doing – and I almost felt for the kid. It’s disarming – that and the fact that he’s a psychotic human being with the ability to do the things he does.
Anna: He’s pretty much a crazy guy, but I guess you could say we get insight into how nuts he is.
So there’s no poetry to his madness; he’s just cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs?
Anna: No, I don’t know if you can call what a serial killer does “poetry.” But there is a really nice scene between him and Carmine. It’s actually a pretty cool scene.
Carmine: Eddie Furlong is great in this. He came honest and he came clean.
What percent of the finale is Idyllic Family Getaway, and what percent is Intense Thriller?
Anna: I don’t know if I can separate them out like that. There’s this freaky undertone because the audience knows more about what’s going on than Danny and Lindsay do. So even though it’s idyllic for us, I don’t think it’ll be so idyllic for the viewer!
Carmine: There is time taken to see the family get away, but once the s— hits the fan, it’s all pretty intense. There’s a nice amount of up-and-down, up-and-down.
CBS Fall Schedule Moves ‘Big Bang,’ ‘Survivor’ and Two ‘CSI’s
Give a taste of the happy Messer family moments we get to witness.
Carmine: We’re do what everybody does at the [Jersey] shore. We take a little trip in the car, hit the beach… It’s a big first trip for the baby, “showing her the world.”
Anna: We got to walk along the pier, feed the birds, build a sandcastle…
Did Anna, Carmine and “Lucy” get to build the sandcastle, or does a squadron of Teamsters take care of that?
Anna: They have special sandcastle people, yes. [Laughs] Not only that, we crush a sandcastle, so there were like eight duplicates waiting on the side. It’s all “acting.”
What’s going on with the other CSIs back in New York City?
Anna: They know that Casey’s after us, so they’re trying to figure out how much he knows about where we are – and how he plans to act on that.
Carmine: It’s hard – and this was something we talked about – for Danny to just walk away and not be involved in it. After all, I’m a big part of why he’s doing what he’s doing. But Mac decides, “You just forget about this and let us deal with it.”
There’s some irony there. Danny’s sent away from the case, so the case comes to him.
Carmine: Exactly.
Will the final moments leave us to process, “What just happened?” Or will we spend the summer wondering, “What happens next?”
Anna: Well, what do you think? You’re going to be spending the summer wondering what happens next.
Carmine: It really is left in a very intimate, very heightened situation. You’re going to get some sort of closure, but you’re also going to be left going, ‘Well f–k. Seriously?!”
