Tonight at 7 PM CDT/8 PM EDT, and again 8 PM PDT/9 PM MDT, GSN (Game Show Network) is airing Game Shows #2 and #1 to conclude their 50 greatest Game Shows ever. The #2 Game Show ever is Jeopardy! The #1 Game Show Ever is (of course) Match Game!
It was once said that the great Gene Rayburn was the Frank Sinatra of Game Show hosts as far as his level of class and style. He was also known as the most likeable man on Daytime Television.
During its heyday (1973 through 1978) Match Game was the #1 show on Daytime Televsion. Based upon its ratings, it had the highest Nielson Rating Score for a Daytime TV Show ever. Better than when Luke & Laura got married on General Hospital. More than when Bo & Hope left Days of Our Lives.
The episode being shown tonight was the 2nd appearance of the dreaded Star Wheel--the apparatus that led to the departure of bottom row center panelist Richard Dawson in 1978. Richard had the highest percentage of matches with the contestants in the Big Money Super Match, and as a result, he got chosen in the Super Match way more than the other panelists. The Star Wheel was to give the other panelists a chance. Ironically, on its very first spin, Richard Dawson came up with a Double Prize amount no less, and the contestant won due to matching Richard.
It's no surprise why Match Game was the #1 Game Show ever. The great episodes shown from 1973 to 1981 with Gene Rayburn are still entertaining today and they are the inspiriation behind this fun message board game that I (along with assistance from Dynamo1) enjoy playing with you, my fellow posters.
