"Cello and Goodbye" discussion **Spoilers**

Okay so Ray's DNA wasn't in the system...wouldn't they have taken it once they found him so they could compare it to the DNA under Tina's fingernails? And then I guess they might have found out whatever it is he is hiding and why he wouldn't give his DNA before.

Wouldn't they need a warrant to get his DNA because he could refuse otherwise...

I'm sure they would have a warrant since it looked like he killed Tina. Just because Sara said "Ray's not a murderer" doesn't mean they wouldn't have to exclude him as a suspect. Unless...did they get the bullet results back before they had Ray?

They must have for Tina, because by the time Sosa had Ray in the interrogation room, he told him he was lucky that the bullets they removed from Tina's body were a match to the bullet they retrieved from the cop's vest. But they would've had to do a really quick analysis of the bullet Haskell fired at the cop to figure that out; seems a bit too fast for me, but then, "CSI" is often guilty of using dramatic license to speed up the timeline.

They had the results when Sosa was talking to Ray because I believe he said that was the only thing that saved Ray. I'm sure they ran all the tests first before trying to get any warrants for DNA...

Finally got to re-watch this episode. And I found this to be one of the most intriguing, intense eps. of this season. So many twists and turns. And if someone had a serial killer nipping at their heels for 2 years taunting and tormenting them, plus a string of dead bodies in the wake, I might do excatly what Ray did. He was out of line in many ways in this episode, but he didn't care. I found Cath to be extrodinary in this epsiode. She was confidant and showed her supervisory skills extremly well. The whole CSI team were fantastic:bolian:

My summary of this stunning episode~

Watching the cunning Haskell eating a sweet treat, and acting all cool, all the while planning his next vile act. Poor Phil and Gloria having drinks with him and his also dreadul "wife" Tina. Putting a sedative powder in their drinks EWWW:klingon: Showing Langston having a restless night while trying to sleep. Nate asking Gloria how she met her husband pertaining actually to Ray, then she passes out. The he brutally kills Phil:(

Ray wakes up in a cold sweat jumps in the shower, then it shows Nate showering while blood goes down the drain, and him screaming, he's such a psycho:scream:

Cath calls Ray tells him they found another body in L.A. She's so right on so perfect in this one. Ray arrives in L.A. This is Det. Sosa's terriotory and he resents them being here >we meet Brodie, no real opinion yet I can't tell till I see her more. The only thing I did see that she was similar to Riley when she first arrived on the scene. Time will tell for me on her:confused: dead body is Phil, he's all f...ed up. The all cover the crime scene so gory, Cath: "Ray I don't think you should be here", but Ray just forges thourgh and starts touching evidence anyway. Cath:: "Ray what are you doing"? He's not being reasonable nor would:confused: I In a box Ray finds Gloria's music sheet and her ring.

Greg finds video of the last 3 nights, He's so adorable and so good at ths so proficent. It shows Phil and Gloria and Tina & Nate. Sosa:: '" I thought he changed his face"? Cath:: "We were wrong". Cath tells Greg what to do. Sosa:: "Don't forget it's till my city" [mine too, I was born there] Some great shots of this fabulous great city.. Ray thinks Gloria is dead, the 72 hour thing Cath:: "we'll see what the evidence says". Ray::" I don't think I can do this boss" So a cop starts to take him to the airport driving by the ocean, and he's got flashbacks of Nate, "you never forget your first The close up of Ray [gorgeous lips]:p Ray asks the officer to stop at a bar, he wants a drink. So how did he know there was a bar here? A tacky little hole-in-the-wall place he downs a couple of shots:wtf:, then calls Doc "Your the only one who will understand, we all make choices, and she was the only only one I ever loved, is dead now and I have to do this, goodbye" enter Nick, Mr. handsome and the rock of CSI. He looks worried. And then Sara always wonderful and so pretty. Sara and Brodie process the crime scene. Sara:: "He popped 2 in Vegas, I hope Gloria wasn't one of them". She finds one of the weapons, he wanted ray to see tHe horror of this". Sosa:: " Ray ditched his ride he's dangerous, tell me he isn't armed"? Ray in the gun store those eyes, when he gets that intense stare-glare, he's scary, not like Haskell just serious right on serious. So he's got mega $$$, and buys a gun and a laptop. [where'd he get all that money?]

Cath calls Nick "I need you here in L.A., I can't find Ray. Nick: "I know he called Doc and it sounded like he was in a dark place, I'm on my way, I'll find his ass:rommie:

Greg researching Willoughby a guy who shot his wife in the '40's Ray is also reseaching stull on his new laptop, finds the Penwick Hotel a seedy place from that era. He goes there, watches across the street, Tina sees him, runs but he catches her "You know why I'm here"? such great acting:thumbsup:

Nick arrives Cath introduces him to Sosa, he goes "Anyone left in Vegas to catch the crooks"? Nick "yeah there's still a couple of us, he's so cute:)

They find Tina dead, so gross and of couse it points to Ray, but Sara goes "Ray's not a murderer" Nick finds the creepy ticket "you never forget your first"

Ray enters his sleazy flea-bag hotel, and sitting in the shadows is a figure. [ I thought it was Nate] but it was Nick:bolian: Ray ::"How'd you find me"? Nick:: "I'm part hounddog" it was the cell ping, so anyway "I'm not here to take you back I'm here to help you out" so sweet. He tells Nick about Tina, and says "you realize what he's doing don't you"? Ray :" yes he's isoloating me" Nick: "This sick bastard is leaving us a breadcrumb trail"

Greg runs the ticket stub with Hodges hovering as always, and he keeps bugging Greg about Ray and finally Greg goes "Shutup":rommie: He grabs the phone and asks Nick if he's going to go all "Dirty Harry" on him and if he knows where he is" he goes "NO"

The amusement park off the Santa Monica Pier, wow, I've been there many moons ago. It's really ancient. The CAROUSEL Ray and Gloria had their first date in Baltimore on a carousel, Nick: "might be going into something here
Ray:: "You got my back"? Nick:: "ALWAYS", yes he does. So the Ray and Nate confrontation on the merry-go-round, he screams "Gloria is still alive" and Nick comes in and says "Your under arrest you son-of-a-bitch", he splits and the cat and mouse chase begins. A cop tells both of them to put their guns down and handcuffs them Nick "I'm not getting down on my knees":guffaw: so once again he escapes, He's so cagey, crafty and cunning and keeps up the same crap over and over.

Sosa and Ray :where'd you get that gun" he lies and he goes "I don't care if he's in your head or you inside his, but you know what's going on here". Ray "Am I being charged with a crime"? Cath is pissed off at Nick says "I told you to find him and you had to have his back and go all on a cowboy vigilante mission" and to Ray "I'm sending you back to Vegas, do I have to post a guard at your door"? Ray: "No, that won't be necessary boss" Nick:: "We'll get him"

Doc meets Ray at the airport and they go back to the office, Doc: "I would have been here anyway"

Hodges lets Ray use his password cause Cath revoked his PC priviledges. he goes if you don't I'll go all "Dirty Harry" on you so Hodges knows her heard him on that earilier call:evil:

He asks him to get coffee and Greg arrives and Ray goes You could be part of the problem or part of the soulution" He's so distraught, that he's being a bit disrespectable to his co-workers wih good reason. Greg: "The solution" they're all understanding of this whole scenerio. So this Willoughby is Nate's dad by his 2nd wife and she was committed to a mental ward. Go figure.

Ray goes out to the farm and he sneaks around with his trusty flashlight finds Mr Thorpe half dead on the stairs, then he does die. He creeps to this room and wa-la there's Gloria all chained up. He goes "I'm going to get you out of here" she's all dazed and confused. The the door creaks open and there stands crazy, creepy, nutty freaky Haskell "Welcome home Ray" :klingon:

to be continued

This is CSI in all it's glory still the best crime drama on TV.. ever:bolian:

Isn't the fact that DNA submission was voluntary kind of a plot device? I thought it was always mandatory for jobs like this. Or is it different in each city? (I think it was mandatory on NY but I don't remember. IDK about Miami)

Is it mandatory in New York? When Scotty Valens is investigating Stella she wants to know how her DNA got in the system, and Adam tells her that one of the technicians may have entered it in by mistake when he was testing her for HIV. Surely if it were mandatory she wouldn't be wondering how it got into the database? :shifty:

Or am I completely off base here?

Not much to offer being as I'm so late to getting here. ;) But I do have a few bullet points...

- I found Sosa to be a very irritating character. Not sure if it's the way he was written or the actor's performance, but I really was struggling to focus through his scenes.

- Morgan seems like a nice fit, but then again so did Sofia and Riley. While it's way too early to tell what Elisabeth's involvement will be as a series regular next season, I kind of wish that Louise Lombard or Lauren Lee Smith returned in a more long-term capacity. The former seems more likely though.

- Nick did NOT act like a professional assistant supervisor in this one. He's supposed to be setting an example and yet he's bending the lines just like Ray. The appropriate thing would have been for him to contact Catherine and update her, but unfortunately he disregarded that protocol. Which leads me to believe he is not yet ready for taking over Catherine's position should she leave the lab.

- Bill Irwin's performance gave me cheap laughs more than the creeps. It'll be nice to just put this saga behind us and get back to the roots of the show next season.

Catherine has bended the lines many times as supervisor and Nick is more than ready to take over for her. ;)

I'm with ya on the whole Haskell thing. If he is mentioned one time next season. :scream:

Oh. See, I couldn't remember one way or the other for sure. It's been so many seasons, I forgot about that ep.

The difference being that Catherine's decisions to 'bend the lines' as a supervisor were made with regard to the team as a whole - whether it be for their safety or cohesion. Nick's actions in this episode were done with no regard for the rest of the team - and technically but both his & Ray's lives (and the unsuspecting public at the Pier) on the line without proper backup or notification. If he had contacted Catherine or the LA authorities of where they were & what they were doing, they might not have lost sight of Haskell because the cops & security at the Pier would have known they were part of the law enforcement personnel and not random wackos firing guns in a public area.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who was bugged by him. I thought for a while there that it was just me LOL.

As for Nick's actions, he was worried about Ray going over the line like Warrick did, which got Warrick killed. He didn't want history to repeat itself. He was thinking on his feet, quickly, etc. I doubt that he purposely neglected to call Catherine. He was just acting quickly to keep Ray from getting himself killed.

Honestly I don't really think Catherine expected any more from Nick than what he did except for calling backup once he actually saw Haskell which we assume (since we didn't see it) that he didn't do. I think Catherine knows her people good enough to know that Nick would find Langston, and she hoped that he would be able to remind him that he was part of a team, like he did in Doctor Who. But there was really no way to get him to go back to Vegas before he was ready to go (unless you wanted LAPD to send him back in handcuffs and it didn't exactly look like LAPD was even looking for him! Heck, It didn't really even look like LAPD was even actively looking for Haskell?).

ETA: That being said...

I'm not exactly sure George wants Nick to be supervisor. He's always said that he wants Nick to be the 'expert' out in the field. Grissom in later seasons and Catherine now both seem(ed) to spend more time in the lab as supervisor than actually out in the field.
