Marcia Wallace Honored by Cancer Center
Jan 27, 8:13 PM (ET)

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Marcia Wallace of "The Bob Newhart Show" fame was honored by the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Saturday for helping educate Americans about the importance of early cancer detection and inspiring others through her 20 years as a breast cancer survivor.

Wallace, who voices schoolteacher Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, said she keeps up a steady pace of speaking engagements to promote vigilance even in an age of improved cancer testing and treatment.

In accepting the Gilda Radner Courage Award, she said she was fortunate to catch her cancer at an early stage and encourages people to "use all the tools" to give themselves the same advantage.

"My message is very early detection. I beat that drum," Wallace said.

The Gilda Radner Courage Award, named for the late comedienne, recognizes a cancer patient whose public battle has given hope to cancer patients and has focused public attention on cancer. Past recipients include Ted Kennedy Jr., Scott Hamilton, Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, actress Rue McClanahan and Buffalo Bills general manager Marv Levy.

Bravo, Marcia. Thanks for posting this piece of news, Dynamo.

Desertwind, as for the celebrities protesting the war: apparently being a celebrity makes them an expert now. ;) When are people going to realize that if we don't handle the problem now, it's going to come back and bite us in the butt later?

THE EAGLES

Don Henley dropped a bombshell during a private concert in Las Vegas on Saturday. The Eagles are working on their first album of all new music in 28 years . "it's coming out in 60 to 90 days, if we don't kill each other first", :D Henley told a VIP crowd at the MGM Grand Arena. It would be the first such album for the group since 'The Long Run" (which I own) in 1979, which included their last Billboard No. 1 hit "Heartache Tonight" Henley, one of the original members later told the crowd of 10,000 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, saying 'I'll see you next summer, hinting at a Eagles tour!! The Eagles disbanded in 1982, but reunited in 1994 with Henley..Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit. The band's last release was 'Hell Freezes Over" in 1994, which included some new songs and past hits recorded for a MTV audience.. wow they must be alot older looking now!!their great, love em'

Oh dw, I loved that song they did, "Get Over It." The lyrics were so true at the time, and are only more true today!

Did you see Regis Philbin on the View this morning? I only watched until his segment was over.

STATS PREDICT MIRREN..WHITAKER WINNERS

Want to know who'll win best actor and actress at the up-coming Oscars? A father and daughter in Fairhaven, N.J. have it all figured ut. Ever since 1998, Jay and Karen Bennett have been picking Oscar winners using a formula that picks winners based on which nominees stared in a film nominated for best picture, and how close the nominee is to 43, the "magic age" for Oscar winners. This year, 61-year old Helen Mirren is the best actress favorite because her film'The Queen" is also up for best picture. and Forest Whitaker has the best chance to win best actor for his performance in "The Last King of Scotland" because he's 45  Hoever, Karen Bennett says that if Leonardo DiCaprio had been nominated for "The Departed" instead of "Blood DIamond" he'd be the favorite!! strange, but I also think their both going to win, just because they already won the GG and the SAG, and usually that goes on to the Academy Awards ;)

^^ Sadly, no Eagles appeared on the View; it was just Regis. Rosie was actually nice to him. I didn't think she could be nice to anyone anymore.

CRITICS SHOWER PRINCE WITH PRAISE

Prince might discover that noting jump-starts a career like an electryfing performance in front of 93 million Super Bowl viewers. Raves poured in Monday after his halftime extravaganza, which will long evoke the image of his "Purple Rain" finale in a monsoon. It was the best half-time show ever", gushed "Rolling Stone" mag. "A quick taste of trancendant pop genius", said "The Village Voice". But there's speculation that Prince added a risque' punctuation mark to his big night, something he would've done in his uninhibited and uncensored days. Conservative syndicated radio host Laura Ingraham suggested on her Monday show that Prince's final silhoutte scene, a side shot of him playing the guitar behind a fluttering white curtain, was a phallic message. Or maybe it was a sly remincer form the purple icon, who wore an aqua-on-peach suit, that he can still get crazy, even with NFL watchdogs breathing down his neck. All in all, the only way it could have been a better night for Prince is if the raindrops turned purple or the socre ended up 31-21. Prince returns to his "3121" club at the Rio for Saturday and Sunday shows this weekend!! I just wondered why he had on a black funky scarf on his head?

The Who Announce 28-City European Tour
Email this Story

Feb 8, 12:30 PM (ET)

By D'ARCY DORAN

LONDON (AP) - More than four decades after they first hit the road, The Who gave an impromptu performance Thursday to show they're in fighting form for a 28-city European tour.

The band's two surviving original members, Pete Townshend, 61, and Roger Daltrey, 62, played a four-song acoustic set at a news conference in London. Their 14-country arena tour begins May 8 in Lisbon, Portugal, and ends July 9 in Helsinki, Finland.

They said they planned to continue touring around the world after Europe.

"We're playing because Roger wanted to prove to all you cynical press people he could still do this," Townshend joked, sitting on a stool, his guitar balanced on his left knee.

Townshend strummed furiously as the pair launched into their hit "Won't Get Fooled Again." Daltrey stood beside him, eyes closed, as he leaned toward his microphone, singing with intensity.

The performance was broadcast live on the Internet from a music studio in Covent Garden. Afterward, they answered questions from fans in the U.S., Sweden and Australia, as well as from journalists.

The pair were asked about their turbulent relationship, which led to the band's breakup in 1982.

"Our relationship is back in the middle, it isn't up or down, it's there in the middle," Daltrey joked. "We're working on making it go down."

Townshend disagreed: "No, I think it's up."

The tour follows last year's release of "Endless Wire," The Who's first new album in more than two decades.

Townshend credited CBS-TV series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," which uses "Who Are You" as its theme, and the series' two spinoffs, which also use their songs, for keeping their music in the public eye during "the quieter days of the band."

Tickets go on sale Monday.
