AUS-NZ Season 7 Ep Discussion

Where to start. Well, firstly I shoudl comment on the fact I missed the start of "Double Cross" due to a technical error with my parents VCR being on the wrong setting meaning that I can't even watch the start now, so I've only seen from the credits onwards. Secondly, I felt that the idea of killing a woman and hanging her up on a cross in a church lacked some originality. Although I did like her dress. Maked her look like an angel.

The discovery of the killer was done well with every new piece of evidence always seeming to tie back to Father Frank and then the added twist of one of the nuns confessing was great. Like the season 2 episode "Alter Boys", it became a matter of what a Priest can and cannot say or do, but in this case Father Frank wasn't exactly following the rules to which he is meant to live, and I actually had to question if he made the right decision in his life. I'm sure he's questioning too. In all, I did like the path to discovering the murder.

The glimpse into Grissom's religion again plays back on "Alter Boys" and I'm actually noticing this to be a theme in all three of the CSIs - the main man (Grissom, Horatio, Mac) all have connections or past connections to a church. Admittedly CSI: Las Vegas went there first, but it's starting to get annoying. I did like that Grissom had the beads in his desk draw, still in their box, as a link to his mother. I believe he doesn't take them out much though.

Once again there was a lot of Grissom/Sara dangled before us just in case we've forgotten that they're together. The "no, dear" was a nice touch, but I wouldn't mind TPTB toning it all down just a little. There are other characters out there, and the scene where Catherine checked on Greg was very nice. Poor, poor bruised Greg...

In all, not a bad episode, but also not one of the best. Not the worst, mind you. I've just seen way better.

Burn Out - 8:30pm, Sunday 18 March

I really like what they did with Catherine lighting a candle in the church for Sam and the continuity with Greg and with her checking on Greg.
I agree that they need to tone down the GSR. It's getting a little too "Hey, just in case you forgot...!"

I liked the scenes with Grissom and religion. My Dad listened to it and said "Once a Catholic, always a Catholic".

I also didn't understand why Sara has become the messenger, taking Catherine's results to Grissom. When the heck did that happen?

I think Sara is looking for any excuse to be with Grissom without making it obvious that they are together. Sara isn't dumb, after all, and if I were in her position I'd do the same thing. She probably offered to take them from Catherine to Grissom.

I forgot about the scene with the candle. I have got to agree with you about that - it was a nice touch. It show's that Sam is never far from Catherine's mind.

And you're Dad's right about being Catholic - some habits/beliefs are hard to break, even if Grissom does try to talk his way around it. I'm sure deep down he accepts himself that he's still Catholic even if he doesn't go to church, etc.

he's still Catholic even if he doesn't go to church, etc.
i'm a catholic but i dont go to church. only on special occiasions.

so this weeks is Burn out.
the one where Grissom gets a bad migrane

Just as "Fannysmackin'" allowed Eric Szmanda to show off his talent, "Burn Out" was William Petersen's turn. While I never doubted what a brilliant actor Petersen is, his portrayal of Grissom in this episode is the best I've seen it. No one has to say anything for us to know that Grissom had an intense migrane coming on as the episode progress, the the mention of it was for the sake of those people who don't know about Grissom's migrane's. We could see the pain Grissom was in, and the frustration as he tried to work out if he had the right pedophile (Carl Fisher) in custody.

Continuing with the strong storylines, the mystery surrounding the location of the boys and why they left was extremely well handled. The mistreatment by the grandfather was a good twist and plays nicely in contrast with Warrick's comment in "Fannysmackin'" about the children of today needing a good grandparent to smack them around and knock some sense into them. Here we have a grandfather who takes things too far, and ultimately leads to the boys running away and being the main culprit of the death of Lucas Hanson.

I was left questioning to the end if Carl was behind the murder of Lucas, and I actually believed he was when Jason refused to identify him fully in the lineup and we heard the voice over. And the ending itself was somewhat of a surprise - Carl simply make the right choice in taking Lucas to the hospital, a bad choice anyone could have made.

The very end with Grissom sneaking into Brass' office to lay down was beautiful. The way this scene was edited, the shots of the people outside with their shadows on the blinds and the muffled shouting played nicely with the pain on Grissom's face and the confusion and fast racing thoughts that must be in his mind. He truly is showing signs that he is burning out. The fact he uses Brass' office shows the trust and friendship between the two - Grissom knows Brass won't disturb him unless it's important. And this scene also takes us back to the start, showing the journey of how Grissom ended up laying on Brass' couch with a very, very bad migrane.

This is a good episode and very well done, continuing the growing strength of Season 7. I look forward to the next episode and seeing how this all effects Grissom in the long term.

TBA (temporary break due to FINA Swimming Championships)

poor u guys.
We have post mortem.

i dont really want to see this one but if mum is going to watch it i might watch it with her

The reason for the repeat is because they don't know the exact time that the FINA Swimming is going to end and want to have the new episodes on in an established time-slot. Otherwords, when they say 8:30 they mean it with a little give or take, not saying 8:30 then it ending up starting at 10pm because FINA ran overtime. That's the reason for the repeats.

It is annoying though. Last time they did this, it took them two months to get back onto the new episodes.

Exactly. That's what I'm worried about. I don't want to have to wait another two months before we get more of Season 7!

Although they'll probably not have CSI next weekend because it's Easter. Most of the channels don't show new episodes during the holidays. Damn them! LOL

Thanks for updating for us, Destiny :)

Date Aired: Sunday 15th April, 8:30pm
Station: Nine Network

First and foremost, I must say that several times during this episode I wish I could teleport in and shoot that damned juror and the judge! It was clear that the whole trial was one-sided in favour of the James family, no doubt about it. And that would be how the media would see it too, thus poor Greg is going to have issues walking down the street for a few weeks.

In terms of the actual trial, I liked how it was done. Doc Robbins looked guilty when he had to admit he would call it a homicide and the look he sent Greg said it all. Several times during the episode I though Greg was going to cry, and I've got to say that Eric Szmanda's performance throughout was brilliant. He certainly has come a long way as an actor during his time on CSI, and this epiosde also shows the development of Greg from naive lab tech to knowing all the risks of the field.

Warrick and Nick looking out for Greg was touching, and I thought it was interesting that Nick got behind the wheel. Yes I know I'm a self-confessed fan of The Love (Nick/Greg), but there was definitely some silent communication going on between Nick and Greg when Nick was on the stand, coming to the defense of his colleague and friend. Nick looked ready to go to blows when Greg was verbally attacked, which tied nicely with Nick's reaction to the incident in Fannysmackin'.

In regards to the miniature crime scene killer storyline, I actually liked this story. It's intriguing how it is all playing out, and I felt that the GSR (Grissom/Sara Romance for those who don't know) was put on the backburner for this, which is where it should be. Case first. relationship second. The detail about the killer knowing about the drugs buried in the backyard was disturbing - this guy must really watch his victims to know them so well. It's little wonder that Grissom is so determined to find the guy as he is more dangerous than Paul Milander or the Blue Paint Killer.

Anyway, in summary I enjoyed this episode, despite my frustration toward the juror and the judge. Really, really wish someone had shut them up. Mind you, if Eric Szmanda keeps up his performance for the rest of the season and doesn't get nominated for an emmy, it just goes to prove that the emmy selectors are being paid to nominated certain people for reasons other than talent.

Next Episode: Happenstance - TBA

That judge was so biased it wasn't funny.

I liked the episode, just didn't like that we hardly had any Catherine in it.

I LOVED Sofia's pep talk to Greg. That was just fantastic.

So, are we getting Happenstance next week? I know that tonight they have the football on, but maybe we'll get Happenstance next week.

Australia will be getting Happenstance on April 29. And it really doesn't surprise me that we're behind - the Nine Network is far from reliable. All you have to do is head to their discussion forum and see all the complaints.
