ANNOUNCEMENT: Regarding Videos (Everyone Read)

After much, much, much, deliberation, the board's powers that be have decided not to allow fans to post videos in this message board.

The decision was taken because these fan films are not copyrighted by the fans, but by the CSI folks, and acquiring and using these clips for other purposes other than viewing is illegal. I know other message boards allow it, and other websites as well, but UGO has a strict no downloading policy. Also, as you may have noticed from the Jorja Fox interview, some CSI people do lurk around here and we could get sued, and then we'd have to shut the site down. I hope everyone understands the position we're in and reacts to this decision maturely.

LiveJournal has a CSI community dedicated solely to fan videos. Though I'm not allowed to direct link to it, you're welcomed to search for it, it's called csifanvids.

So I'll start locking these video threads tonight. Sorry, guys.
 
Is there any way that there might be a possibility that the threads might be opened? Once TPTB of the board go into a further investigation?

The decision has already been taken. I doubt UGO is going to change their policy regarding illegal downloads, seeing as they're, you know, illegal.

Another problem with fan videos is that the great majority of them are made using MP3s that are also downloaded illegally. It's just too risky.

I'm sure you guys won't have any problems finding these video communities. There's hundreds of them out there, for every conceivable fandom. That LJ community looks pretty cool and is updated regularly.

MP3s are illegal? *deletes all the songs purchased off iTunes*
 
Okay, I've done google searching and searching. I respect the board's rules, but I came across a site that featured clips. And they mentioned on how "videos" are able to be hosted and what category they fall under

The video clips, screencaps, news articles and scans are reproduced here without permission but remain the property of their respective sources. They fall under the "fair use" doctrine of the copyright law.

I highly doubt you'd get sued for music videos. But whatever people feel needs to be done to protect the board...
 
I would also like to point out that the LJ community your offering us as an alternative doesn't host Miami or NY vids, just LV. As a New York and Miami devotee, where are the rest of us supposed to go? :( Also, with greatest respect, I resent the implication that all vidders obtain their stuff illegaly. I buy all my MP3s, and I upload most of my video clips from tapes by connecting the video player to my laptop. Last time I checked, that wasn't illegal. Those episodes that are downloaded, i mostly already own on DVD anyway but download because the quality on tape is bad.

Plus, what about fanfiction? We don't make any money from that and if we apply disclaimers we can't get sued. If we applied disclaimers to our videos would that make a difference? I'm not particularly angry or anything, and I don't want to cause a stir (as I said, whatever people think needs to be done to protect the board) but I think this new rule is very sad. Talking about videos in another place just isn't the same as being able to do it here, at 'home', if you will.
 
I think a LJ Community should be created then for all videos. Creating LJ Communities are not difficult at all and they're easy to use! :)

I too am very upset that this had to happen but I think posting on LJ may be a better idea. It is upsetting because not everyone is excellent in all three areas of FanArt/Fanficton and they're able to use their talents on that such as Fan Videos (and for the life of me I could never really get one together :lol: ) but, I think it would probably be a lot popular if you posted it on LJ.

Fan Videos aren't really going to die, they're just being moved. :/

Oh, edited because of a question that came to me.

All right, can it be possible to maybe send the URLs through PM just like it is for M rated Fanfics? Or because of the new rule, mentioning anything at all even in PMs is not allowed?
 
What about e-mail? will they get in trouble for that? If the people request the song who they want for their shippers or character by theirselves, they can sent it to them by e-mailing.
