I agree with you, Silencer. Adam is much like a child in those aspects and he does seem to look up to Mac for his approval (as well as the other CSIs). For the most part he seems at ease with the CSIs, who seem to be generally fond of him, but there are moments when social ineptitude looks to set in.
And yes, I agree that a lot of it could have come from his father. I forgot to mention that in the last post, lol. I think having an abusive relationship with a parental would most definitely damage one's self-confidence. Like with Danny who was eager to please Mac, Adam also wants to prove his worth.
I wouldn't, however, put it past Adam to have faced social rejection while also at school. Sadly, he is a rather quirky guy, and as much as I personally adore him, kids are mean. It doesn't mean he was the absolute outcast of his school, but I think he might have had a kid or two who gave him a hard time.
It kind of makes me wonder how in the world he roped in a Suicide Girl. She must have been charmed by his awkward, quirky nature. I'd be a sap for it too. He's managed to become the only CSI character I'll gush about and call adorable. Yeah, the others have "let me have your babies" moments, but for the most part he's the only one who'll make me go, "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaddddaaaaaaaaaaaammmm." when I see his name in the credits or pops on screen.
Also, for those interested in other AJ Buckley news, 'The Last Sin Eater' opened today at limited theaters.
Edit: cause Fay posted before me...
Oh dear lord no, I think the closest Adam might have gotten to sports was perhaps being on the math team while in high school. Though I agree and think Adam was rather studious and withdrawn. I think moving to New York might have been the change Adam needed to start over and build more confidence in himself. It's hard to do it in your hometown, but moving across the country where no one knows you gives the opportunity to start fresh.
