Well, that's them, at the play in Chicago, but others have stated even Mattie said, how he misses CSI, and many rumours and strong hints from Carol Mendolsohn, that he'll probably make an appearance or two on CSI. He's got lots of time to do that, and I feel and others as well that he will. He's got 5 months off, so why not? A couple of news bullentins from him posted on this site~and won't that be wonderful?

well, i don't think WP hates talking about CSI or has the show in contempt, like some of the reviewers wrote. i think he just doesn't like it when people ask him questions about CSI when he is doing a play, especially right after his performance.

i mean, he gave many interviews, so we all know what his answer to 'when will you be back?' is. he moved on to do something else for a reason. he is in a different place now doing what he loves the most, and still the show haunts him. in some cases it almost equals saying: i came just to see you live cuz i watch CSI. i don't know what the play was about.

but he wants to come back, imo. maybe even appear in an episode or two. i think he still feels certain loyalty to people who work for the show, but he hated being there 24/7 for so many years and not being able to fully satisfy himself artistically.

At the post show discussion that I went to, he called it 'that show', in a way that he didn't want to be talking about CSI. I don't think anyone would've dared have asked him anything about CSI due to the vibes he was giving off about it. I don't blame him for that. Not contempt, but he wanted to talk about something new he was doing rather than a show he's been talking about constantly for the last nine years!

I'm sure he does miss CSI in the way that you may miss your old job cos you miss the people rather than the work. Thats the impression I get. The only reason he stopped in the programme for so long was that he cared about the people more than the show and wanted to make sure that they were in a strong position before he left. I think the show probably stopped being challenging for him as an actor after the first few seasons. I get the impression that he was desperate to leave since then. He's said himself that he didn't leave because people working on the show have families and mortgages and so need the work that CSI provides them with. He didn't stop for the love of actually doing the show.

Also, doing CSI was tiring him out. It was making him ill. Too many hours for too long a period of time. He probably felt as if his life was passing him by!

I'm not saying he'll never go back, cos I think he will, for one or episodes. Cos like Adz said, he got a loyalty to the people in the show, but not, i think, the show itself.

^ well, i think he has loyalty for the show itself too. maybe less pronounced but he still is the one who helped make it from scratch.

but i think he didn't want to be in it from the beginning. i remember reading a long article in Chicago Tribune written by a friend of his. the story was that when Billy got news that CSI got picked up by CBS, he threw his cell phone on some tree. lmao. he didn't want to do it in the first place cuz he knew it's a long-term exhausting responsibility. plus, it's embarrassing if it gets cancelled. i remember reading that he had some sweet deal that whether or not the show's gonna get picked up he gets a lot of money, which is why he agreed to do the Pilot.

yeah i agree, maybe i worded that a bit strong. After all, he has put a huge amount of effort into making the show work. I agree with you that he maybe didn't really want to do it from the beginning. I think he he was thinking that it would be a one or two season thing, then he would be out of it. Little did he know!! lol!! Cos after all, he was a bit of free spirit with his work before that, doing bits here and bit there, whatever took his fancy.

I didn't know that he would've got loads of money whether it got picked up or not. I find that hilarious that he threw his phone at the tree when he heard it had been picked up by CBS :bolian::lol: He was obviously convinced it wouldn't get picked up and thought he was getting some easy money! lol!!!!

I'd also like to bring everyones attention a fan review on WPAP. She says at the end that he has an enormous amount of respect in the theatre gooing community in chicago. And that they feel he is a true chicago stage actor to give up millions of dollars to come back and perform for them. Now that really makes me proud of him. Thats he has that much respect. Very proud indeed.

yup, that was the thing behind it i believe. ;) i think Les Moonves tried to get him to star in a TV show for years, and finally they struck that deal. but WP knew the risks too, and he would never have picked a show that wouldn't be interesting to him at all. i think he did get a lot of pleasure making it. the whole process was very creative, especially in the beginning, and he must have enjoyed that. but there were certainly a lot of things he didn't enjoy, too. the further in the show, the less engaging it was to him (artistically) and consequently the higher the paycheck was getting. add loyalty he felt for the coworkers, the show itself and the fans who loved him and he's there for 9 seasons. ;)

yeah, he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that would do a project that doesn't interest him. And take a lot of risks trying to get it off the ground. i also think wouldn't have done it had he not had the amount of influence he had with regards to the direction of the show and the grissom character.

^ besides, it's hard to figure out what he really thinks sometimes. some of his interviews (especially written ones) make me think that he is totally different from what i thought. i don't really care that much, though. what matters is that i enjoy what he does as an actor. :)

I am pretty convinced that he IS different from "what I thought" (which would be hard to describe, but since I've only "known" him as Grissom, I am sometimes jarred by his style/words in interviews). He's not Grissom. He's an actor, and one I really enjoy.

I think he is doing what he wants to do, and can't always be forthcoming in interviews about upcoming projects. (Hence the easy-to-interpret-in-mulitple-ways, "I'm going back to check on my guys.")

What a lucky guy he is. I also think he has made some of his own luck -- he's done what he wanted to do throughout most of his career. I'm sure that maverick attitude cost him a few things, but in the end it paid off for him. Not everybody who just takes a job here and there ends up with a great career; I'd wager a bet that the majority do not.

A comparison to Jim Carey is, oddly, in order: Carey dropped out of HS and ended up wildly successful and famous. Billy barely made it through HS and also dropped out of college, and also ended up wildly successful and famous. But neither should be held up as a model to follow: statistically, these guys defy norms!! But it's one of the reasons they fascinate so many of us.:)

He probably just says what he feels like saying on that particular day when he does interviews!

I do also like the fact that he's got where he is without losing himself or what he wants to do. He's not fame hungry. He hasn't done projects that will make him famous - he's done stuff cos he knows that he'd enjoy it or he finds it interesting. Thats one of my favourite things about him.

There's a video of a radio interview been posted on WPAP that he did in chicago in July. Haven't had chance to listen to it yet cos i've been having sneaky looks at it whilst at work, with the sound off. ;)
He looks very very pretty on the video though!

i think it's safe to say he is pretty eccentric. he's an artist after all. ;)

Hey Everyone. Yes , I'm back.
I have to admit that I wasn't sure if I was going to post anything here after all that hue and cry saying that we were stalking Billy and didn't respect the man. I think it's amazing that the ones who cry out the loudest about that, are the ones who still want details from those of us who actually went to see Billy. So, I'm a little hurt and angry still. :(

All I'll say for now is that, no, I didn't get to meet Billy personally. He took off right after the performance, so there was no chance.

I will also say that Billy was made for the stage. He is in his element in front of a live audience. His characterization of Ray was raw, riveting and full of repressed anger, hurt and passion. I will be going back next year to see Billy perform. He is simply amazing.

Well, that's them, at the play in Chicago,

Whoa! That's a touch insulting to those who saw and heard him say that! He said that at our post show discussion too. He was quite clear in what he said...

I think the whole will he/ won't he discussion is based on a few things...

1. If he really hated the show that much, he wouldn't call the cast 'my guys,' and he wouldn't keep his name as a Executive Producer. It's his pension. It rakes in cash which allows him to sit back and do his theatre, something which he clearly enjoys and wants to go back to. He strikes me as a canny business man, and he has made financial decisions which make him secure. Why not?

2. If you were the show runner of a show which had falling ratings predominantly, if not solely, due to William Petersen leaving wouldn't you tease readers, viewers and audiences like Carol Mendelsohn is doing? 'No firm plans...' 'he's around...' 'hopefully he'll do an episode...' It keeps us hoping. wondering and tuning in to see if any references are made to Grissom, or he actually does a voice over a makes an appearance. Come the sweeps, he may well appear...

3. CSI is the past. His theatre is the present and the future. He's earned the right to choose what he does now. Why churn up the past? But on the other hand, he owes the popularity of 'Blackbird' originally to him "being that bloke off CSI." As it turns out, it's become a bit of a monster on it's own; with Mattie Hawkinson having a major say in that. He's using his fame, from CSI, to make money for Victory Gardens, with the Evening with and the extended run with inflated seat prices. Does he pick and choose his allegiance to CSI as and when he feels like it? Harsh question with many answers, both positive and negative. Like 'Blackbird,' I'll leave you to make up your own mind!

4. In some articals he claims he'll go back for guest spots, one of those was in our UK media. Other articles, he doesn't miss playing Grissom at all. I think it's just how he feels on the day and who or why he is being interviewed.

Adzix is spot on. I think he is a bit eccentric. It's his right. Still love his cheeky little face though! And it's fantastic he smashed his phone up! Rofl!! Viva la Diva!

Hey!! Gilsgal! Great to hear from you! Thought you might have done a runner with Billy after the show!

*CLAP* *CLAP* *CLAP*

Well said, chuck. Took me a while after my little rant before I looked on here again. But, we all have something beautiful in common, Crim, CSIz, Gameface, PLG, you and I... we have seen him on stage and love him even more for his creativity and passion.

Oh thank GOD you're still alive, GG!! Goood I missed you! I'm so sorry you're still upset :( Facebook me about it, ok? :) <3 ya And I'm SO GLAD you had a good time :) And yeah, I agree with your statement on people who claim we disrespect him are the ones who want the most details...It's quite a two sided coin, yes?

I was going to comment on this whole Billy liking or disliking talking about CSI or not, but I decided not to...I think ya'll have covered it pretty well...I would agree about him giving a different answer depending on his mood, but I think overall he's very, very happy onstage and doesn't really think about much else...which is a good thing.
He did mention in the interview that he was going back to "check on the guys" but other than that, kept pretty silent on it, other than he missed cast & crew...So regardless of how he feels about the show, we just need to continue being his fans & loving/supporting him regardless of whatever is said or happens...cos we LOVE you Billy! :)

All that being said, I'm happy he's so happy and in his pure element onstage- he TRULY is. You have to see it to believe it.
PLG: love what you said about all of us having seeing Billy in common- beautifully said :) It's truly impossible to capture the magic & the pure amazingness of Billy onstage. It's just a beautiful thing...he's SO natural & so happy it's just uplifting in and of itself for me. I'm thrilled beyond imagination for him.

GG I hope you recover soon from your hurt feelings soon...I'd DYING to hear about your experience in Chicago & 'Blackbird'!! Check your PMs ;) <3
